ABOUT THE SOFTWARE

What is Zabbix

Zabbix is an open-source monitoring platform that collects metrics from servers, network devices, databases and applications, evaluates them against trigger rules, and raises alerts. It is published under the GNU Affero General Public License version 3, with no paid edition held back.

The project has been maintained by Zabbix LLC in Riga, Latvia since 2001. There is no enterprise build, no feature paywall and no per-host licence fee. The commercial side of the company sells support subscriptions and services, which means the software you run is the same software a bank runs. The project reports more than 300,000 deployments across 190-plus countries.

Architecturally it is three moving parts: a collector daemon, a PHP frontend, and a relational database that stores every value ever collected. That database is the whole story operationally. A long-term support release gets three years of full support and two more of limited support, while standard releases get roughly six months, so upgrade planning is a recurring job rather than a one-off.

FEATURES

What Zabbix does

Zabbix collects from almost anything that will answer a query: agents on hosts, SNMP on network gear, IPMI on server hardware, JMX on Java services, HTTP on APIs. Rules, alerting, dashboards and an API sit on top of the collected data.

Agent and agentless collection

Lightweight agents on Linux, Windows and BSD hosts, plus agentless checks over SNMP, IPMI, JMX, SSH, Telnet, HTTP and ODBC for devices you cannot install software on.

Network device monitoring

Native SNMP v1, v2c and v3 with bulk requests, and hundreds of maintained device templates covering switches, routers, firewalls, printers and power distribution units.

Custom checks and user parameters

User parameters, external scripts, JavaScript preprocessing and calculated or dependent items let you monitor anything a shell command or an API call can report.

Low-level discovery and auto-registration

Filesystems, interfaces, containers and cloud objects are discovered and attached to items automatically, and new agents can register themselves into the right host group.

Templates, triggers and dependencies

Nested templates apply hundreds of checks in one assignment. Trigger dependencies suppress the cascade of alerts that follows a single upstream failure.

Alerting and escalation

Multi-step escalations route notifications by tag and severity to email, webhooks and messaging tools, with repeat intervals and automatic acknowledgement handling.

Dashboards, maps and reports

Custom dashboards, network topology maps, graphs and scheduled report delivery, with availability and top-100 views built from the same collected data.

Proxies and a full API

Zabbix proxies collect on remote or segmented networks and buffer through link outages. A JSON-RPC API exposes every object for provisioning and integration.

WHAT'S ALWAYS INCLUDED

Every app. Fully managed.
Nothing extra to pay for.

Every app you deploy includes the full managed service — security, backups, updates, and support from day one.

Automatic updates and patches

Apps run the latest stable version. Security patches applied silently, with rollback if needed.

Daily off-site backups

Multiple daily backups in redundant off-site locations. One-click restore if anything goes wrong.

24/7 uptime monitoring

Continuous monitoring with instant alerting. We respond before you notice.

SSL, firewall, DDoS protection

Auto-renewing SSL, hardened firewall rules, DDoS mitigation on every deployment.

Performance and scaling

We monitor resource usage continuously. When your app needs more headroom, we flag it and upgrade with your explicit approval.

Dedicated engineering support

Real engineers by email and ticket. DNS, SMTP & migration help. All included in €9.

WHY MANAGED

Why teams pick managed Zabbix

PRTG moved to subscription-only licensing and mid-tier renewals jumped several times over, which sent a wave of network teams looking at Zabbix. The software is free. The database underneath it is not free to operate, and that is the part teams underestimate.

Installing Zabbix takes an afternoon. Keeping it alive is a different job. The history and trends tables grow with every collected value, and the built-in housekeeper deletes expired rows one batch at a time. On an unpartitioned MySQL or MariaDB database the deletes cannot keep pace with the inserts, so retention quietly stops being enforced.

The symptom is specific and it catches experienced operators. The housekeeper reports that it ran. Retention is set to 90 days. Meanwhile the database is growing by roughly a gigabyte a day and holds hundreds of millions of rows older than a year. Nothing alerts, because the thing that would have alerted is the instance filling its own disk. When that disk fills, the collector stops writing values and the monitoring you built to catch outages is the outage.

USE CASES

Three teams who run Zabbix on DANIAN

Zabbix earns its keep where the estate is bigger than the team watching it. These are the shapes of team that put a managed monitoring server to work rather than adding another machine to maintain.

14-PERSON MANAGED SERVICE PROVIDER

Replacing a per-device monitoring add-on across six customer networks

One managed instance, one Zabbix proxy inside each customer network. Proxies hold data locally when a customer link drops and flush it on reconnect. Host groups and user permissions keep each customer to their own view, and a scheduled report goes out monthly per account.

REGIONAL WIRELESS INTERNET PROVIDER

Watching 40 tower sites without a monitoring box at every site

SNMP polling of radios, switches and power distribution at each tower, aggregated through a proxy per aggregation point. Interface saturation and battery voltage carry separate severities, and trigger dependencies stop one dark tower from generating forty alerts.

30-PERSON SOFTWARE COMPANY

Leaving a per-host bill that crossed four figures at 60 machines

Agents run in active mode and connect outward, so no inbound rules were opened in the production network. Application checks come from user parameters already written for the old tool, and log monitoring covers the four services that page the on-call engineer.

COMPARISON

Four ways to run Zabbix

The cost of monitoring is rarely the software. It is the licence meter on the tool, or the hours you spend keeping a free tool healthy. Here is what the four realistic options cost for the same handful of monitored machines.

Path1 monitored host5 hosts10 hostsWho does the work
Proprietary SaaS (per-host)$15/mo$75/mo$150/moNothing to run. Cost rises with every machine you add, and metric and log volume are metered separately.
Self-host on a VPS$24/mo$24/mo$24/moYours: partitioning, retention, cache sizing, schema upgrades, backups and the disk-fill alert. Budget a few hours a month once it is real.
Home server~$260 once~$260 once~$260 onceSame operational work, plus your own power, internet link and hardware failures. A mini PC with 16 GB of RAM and an NVMe drive is the usual starting point.
DANIAN managed hosting for Zabbix€9/mo€9/mo€9/moOurs: database tuning, retention design, updates, backups and the disk headroom. Yours: the trigger rules and who gets paged.

The per-host column is Datadog infrastructure pricing at list, billed annually; verify current figures before you decide. Our price does not move with monitored host count. What does move is the resources the instance needs, and those are upgradeable inside the same €9 plan structure.

BY INDUSTRY

Zabbix for specific industries

Monitoring requirements differ more by sector than most software does. A plant floor, a carrier network and a service provider have different rules about what must be recorded, how long it is kept, and who is allowed to see it.

Network operators inside the scope of the NIS2 Directive carry an incident-notification duty with a short clock: an early warning to the national authority within 24 hours of becoming aware of a significant incident. That is a detection problem before it is a paperwork problem, and detection is what a monitoring platform is. We configure SNMP bulk requests on your device templates so a full poll of a busy switch is one round trip rather than dozens, and we keep trends for five years while history stays short, so you can still show what a link was doing two summers ago without carrying the raw values. A typical build polls uplink interfaces on a 60-second interval, applies trigger dependencies so a failed upstream router does not fire an alert for every device behind it, and records the event timeline that turns a 24-hour clock into a filing exercise.

Service providers run against per-customer response commitments, and ITIL incident-management practice expects an incident record with a defensible start time rather than the moment somebody noticed. Zabbix event timestamps give you that start time. We deploy a proxy inside each customer network, which buffers collected data locally when the link between you and them drops, so an outage in the connectivity does not become a hole in the customer's record of it. Permissions are scoped by host group so an engineer working one account cannot see another, and the JSON-RPC API is the hook for pushing events into your ticket system. A provider running 6 customer networks typically lands somewhere between 8,000 and 20,000 items, which is comfortably inside a single instance rather than one per client.

Facility operators design against availability tiers, and a Tier III target of 99.982% leaves roughly 1.6 hours of downtime a year across the whole facility. You cannot defend that number without hardware and environmental telemetry that predates the failure. We enable IPMI polling so out-of-band controllers report fan, temperature and power-supply state even when the operating system is unresponsive, and we pair it with SNMP against power distribution units and cooling. The workflow that matters is threshold escalation: a rack inlet temperature crossing its warning band pages the facility engineer, while the same sensor crossing its critical band triggers the shutdown runbook. Trends kept for five years give you the seasonal picture that sizes the next cooling upgrade.

Plant networks are built to the IEC 62443 zone and conduit model, where the control zone does not accept arbitrary inbound connections from the business network, let alone from a hosted service. Zabbix fits that model without an exception being written for it. We place a proxy inside the plant zone, which polls gateways, historians and networked equipment locally and opens a single outbound connection to the managed server, so no path is created into the control zone. Checks are read-only by design: reachability, interface state, temperature and cycle counts from equipment that already exposes them. Retention is set long, with trends held for five years, because process traceability questions arrive months after the batch that prompted them.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Everything teams ask before signing up — answered straight, without sales speak.

Three groups: technical setup, migration, and how DANIAN works as a service.

01

Technical and configuration

Yes, and this is the normal case for a hosted server. Agents run in active mode: they open an outbound connection to the monitoring server, ask what to collect, and push results back. No inbound rule, no port forward and no public address is needed on your side.
Agent 2 is the Go rewrite. It does everything the original agent does, adds loadable plugins for Docker, MySQL, PostgreSQL and Redis, handles concurrent checks better, and can buffer values on disk when the server is unreachable. We recommend agent 2 unless you have a platform it does not build for.
We keep raw history short, in the range of one to two weeks, and keep hourly trends for years. Nearly all long-range questions are answered by trends, and raw values are what actually consumes the disk. You can move either figure per item group if you need to.
All three, plus SSH, Telnet, HTTP and ODBC checks. SNMP v3 with authentication and encryption is supported, bulk requests are on for devices that handle them, and a Java gateway is available for JMX collection from Java application servers.
Yes. User parameters, external scripts, script items and JavaScript preprocessing all work, and you have terminal access to the instance. Calculated and dependent items let you derive values from checks you already collect without polling a host twice.

02

Migration and onboarding

21 datacenter locations across six continents. You choose the region at provisioning. Application data sits in the region you choose; pick whichever is closest to your users or matches your data-residency preference.
Yes. Request a region migration from the dashboard and we run the move in the background. The system emails you when the migration completes; total transfer time depends on data volume but typical instances finish in a few hours. There is no extra charge for a region change.
Yes. Full data export is available at any time, in a portable format you can bring to any infrastructure.
Yes to both. Custom domains are supported with certificates issued and renewed for you. Agent to server traffic can be encrypted with pre-shared keys or certificates, configured per host, and we will help you set that up during onboarding.

03

Billing, support, and platform

€9 covers everything we do for that app: hardware in the region you choose, daily off-site backups with one-click restore, automatic security patches and version upgrades, 24/7 monitoring, SSL and firewall, and engineering support on email and the ticket section in the client portal. There are no setup fees or hidden line items. For more info see our Pricing page.
If you decide to continue, we charge €9/app/month from day 8. If you don't, the trial ends and you can export your data. No card is required for the trial, and we never auto-charge you without explicit consent.
No. The €9/month is flat regardless of how many users log into your app. Add 5 users or 50; the price doesn't change.
24/7 email and ticket support, both staffed by engineers who run the systems. We handle DNS configuration, SMTP setup, app integrations, performance tuning, troubleshooting, and migration help. Response time is typically under an hour. There is no tier system — every customer gets the same support.
Yes. Cancel from the dashboard. We don't charge a cancellation fee, we don't lock data, and we will export your data to you on request before deletion. data to you on request before deletion.
Every customer instance is backed up daily to a separate region from the primary. We test restores. You can request a restore at any backup point within the retention window — usually 7 days for daily backups.
Your application data sits in the region you choose at provisioning — 21 datacenter locations across six continents. Account-level data (billing, account email, support ticket history) is processed centrally. Application data region is picked by you, per app.
99.9% uptime SLA on every app, every tenant. Service credits are documented at danian.co/service-level-agreement. The status page is located at status.danian.co.
When your tenant approaches the resource ceiling — the base tier holds 1 vCPU/RAM, 30 GB storage — we notify you. Resource upgrades happen with your explicit consent; we will not upgrade your tenant or charge you without it.
We wait. We don't suspend the app or delete your data on the first failed charge. We email you, you fix the card on file, and we continue.
Invoices can be downloaded from the billing dashboard in PDF the day each charge succeeds. EU VAT is added where applicable and the VAT-reverse-charge regime applies for VAT-registered businesses with a valid number.
150+ open-source apps across automation, team chat, file sync, analytics, AI, password management, email marketing, dev tools, project management, smart home, CMS, and federated social. See the full catalog →
Yes. Every instance comes with a web-based terminal and a file manager in your DANIAN management dashboard. Useful for managing your data and customizations.
Resources scale with your usage. If your app needs more vCPU, RAM, or storage, we add it — and we ask first before any change to your plan. €9 is the floor; resource-heavy workloads may price higher, but you'll always know in advance.
Yes. We have both a Partner program and an Affiliate program available. Anybody can sign up.
No contract. No minimum commitment. Cancel anytime from the dashboard with one click. The 7-day free trial requires no credit card. After the trial converts to paid, you can still cancel at any month without notice or penalty.
