ABOUT THE SOFTWARE

What is wger

wger is a Django application for tracking workouts, nutrition and body measurements, published under AGPL-3.0-or-later. It carries a community-maintained exercise database, a nutrition module fed by Open Food Facts data, a documented REST API, and mobile clients for Android and iOS.

The project is led by Roland Geider and maintained by the wger team rather than a company. The application code is AGPL-3.0-or-later and the documentation is CC-BY-SA. The exercise database is a wiki: users write the descriptions, contribute the images and videos, and translate them through Weblate, and instances pull the result from the project's reference server. Ingredient data comes from Open Food Facts under the Open Database License, which is why barcode scanning works out of the box rather than through a paid nutrition API.

The install footprint is larger than a single container suggests. A working instance wants Postgres, a Redis cache, at least one Celery worker for the scheduled sync tasks, and gunicorn behind a reverse proxy. The full ingredient dataset takes roughly a gigabyte of database space on its own, which is why the upstream image ships with exercises but no ingredients. The Android and iOS apps are thin clients against the REST API: you point them at your own server address, and they move version by version with the server behind them.

FEATURES

What wger does

wger covers the training side and the eating side in one account. Routines, logged sessions, an exercise database, calorie tracking, measurements and progress photos sit on a single timeline per person, with trainer roles on top for studios and clubs that manage other people's training.

Routines with automatic progression

Define the progression rule once (weight, reps or sets) and the routine advances on its own schedule instead of being retyped every week.

Workout logging

Every set, repetition and weight is logged against the session, so the history is a record of what was actually done rather than what was planned.

Community exercise database

Hundreds of exercises with muscles, equipment, images and videos, contributed and translated by users and synced from the project's reference server.

Nutrition plans and barcode logging

Meal plans and calorie targets built against ingredient data from Open Food Facts, with barcode lookups resolving against your own imported catalogue.

Body weight and custom measurements

Weight over time plus any custom measurement you define (circumferences, test scores, resting heart rate), charted on the same athlete timeline.

Progress photo gallery

Dated images stored in the instance's own media volume, backed up nightly with the database rather than in a third-party photo service.

Gym member management with trainer roles

Member lists, trainer accounts and contracts, so a coach sees the people assigned to them and an administrator sees the roster.

REST API and mobile clients

A documented REST API with token authentication, and Android and iOS apps that point at your own server address rather than a vendor's cloud.

WHAT'S ALWAYS INCLUDED

Every app. Fully managed.
Nothing extra to pay for.

Every app on DANIAN ships with the same operational baseline. You do not choose a backup add-on or a monitoring tier. Hosting, patching, backups, SSL, and support are part of the €9, and they apply to wger the same way they apply to everything else in the catalog.

Automatic updates and patches

Apps run the latest stable version. Security patches applied silently, with rollback if needed.

Daily off-site backups

Multiple daily backups in redundant off-site locations. One-click restore if anything goes wrong.

24/7 uptime monitoring

Continuous monitoring with instant alerting. We respond before you notice.

SSL, firewall, DDoS protection

Auto-renewing SSL, hardened firewall rules, DDoS mitigation on every deployment.

Performance and scaling

We monitor resource usage continuously. When your app needs more headroom, we flag it and upgrade with your explicit approval.

Dedicated engineering support

Real engineers by email and ticket. DNS, SMTP & migration help. All included in €9.

WHY MANAGED

Why teams pick managed wger

Trainer platforms price by active client. A five-client band runs about $23 a month and a fifty-client band about $79, before nutrition and payment add-ons. wger charges nothing per client. What it asks for instead is operator attention, and that is the part we take over.

Running wger is not one process. It is a web application, a task queue, a cache, a database and a scheduler, and most of the failures people hit sit in the wiring between them rather than in the app itself. A fresh instance behind a reverse proxy will refuse the login form until the trusted origins and forwarded-protocol settings match the hostname. Password resets go to the container log instead of an inbox until the mail backend is configured. Scheduled exercise and ingredient sync does nothing at all unless a Celery worker and a Redis broker are actually running.

The one that catches people later is the exercise image cache. wger stores absolute URLs in its API cache, so moving to a custom domain breaks image links across the instance, usually noticed first in the mobile app, days after the move, by a member who thinks the app is broken. The fix is a forced cache warm-up, which is obvious once you have seen it and invisible until then. We re-run it as part of every domain change and check records through the API before handing the instance back.

USE CASES

Three teams who run wger on DANIAN

The buyers who move to managed wger are rarely tracking their own training. They are tracking other people's: patients, paying clients, squad athletes. That changes what matters: closed registration, trainer roles, working password resets and a backup that outlives the subscription.

SIX-ROOM PHYSIOTHERAPY CLINIC

Home-exercise programmes that outlive the referral

Registration closed; therapists create each patient account. Home-exercise routines are assigned at the end of a session and reviewed from the logs at the next one. Mail is wired so reset links reach patients. Nightly copies of the database and photo media go to a second datacenter.

TWO-TRAINER COACHING STUDIO

Leaving per-client billing at fifty clients

Moved off a platform whose bill scaled with the roster. The ingredient set is imported so barcode logging resolves locally, both trainers hold trainer-role accounts, and the mobile apps point at the studio's own domain rather than a vendor's app.

REGIONAL ROWING CLUB

Forty athletes, three coaches, one timeline

Three coach accounts, forty athlete accounts, no self-registration. Athletes log sessions, supplements and body measurements from the phone; coaches read the same timeline and export the full history as a database dump when a governing body asks.

COMPARISON

Four ways to run wger

The proprietary alternative to wger is a trainer-client platform, and those price by active client band. The comparison below follows that axis rather than seats. Platform figures are published in US dollars and were read from the vendor's pricing material; treat them as the vendor's numbers, not ours.

Path1 active client5 active clients50 active clientsWho does the work
Proprietary trainer platform (ABC Trainerize)$0 free tier$23/month$79/month, plus $45 nutrition and $10 paymentsVendor runs it. Cost grows with the roster and with each add-on.
Self-host on a production-class VPS€24/month€24/month€24/monthYou do. Proxy headers, mail, Celery, backups, upgrades, and database tuning past about 25 active users.
Home server~€250 one-time~€250 one-time~€250 one-timeYou do, plus your own power, uplink and uptime. Roughly €2/month in electricity for a small N100-class machine.

Client counts describe the people whose training is tracked. wger itself does not price per person, and neither do we.

BY INDUSTRY

wger for specific industries

Four settings put a record-keeping duty on top of training data: physiotherapy, studio coaching, competitive sport and college athletics. Each needs the log to survive longer than the subscription that produced it, and each puts a different configuration demand on the same wger instance.

Clinical records outlive the treatment. Chartered Society of Physiotherapy guidance puts the minimum retention for an adult record at eight years from the last episode of care, and six years in Scotland, while the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario sets ten. A training log that disappears with a cancelled subscription does not meet that. On a managed wger instance we close self-registration so a patient account exists only when a therapist creates one, wire the mail backend so reset links reach real inboxes, and keep daily encrypted copies of the database and the uploaded media in a second datacenter. A therapist assigns a home-exercise routine after assessment, the patient logs each session from the mobile app, and the therapist opens the completed sets before the next appointment instead of asking how it went.

Studios pay for their clients twice: once in coaching hours, once in software. Trainer platforms price by active-client band: five clients around $23 a month, fifty around $79, before the nutrition and payment add-ons, so the bill tracks the roster. wger charges per instance, not per member. The NSCA's professional standards ask that pre-participation clearance and injury or incident reports be kept and stored securely, which puts the paperwork around training in the same system as the training. We enable the gym-member module with trainer roles so a coach sees only assigned members, and leave registration closed so nobody signs themselves up. The trainer creates the member, assigns a routine with progression rules, and the member's logs land back in the studio's own database.

Anti-doping exposure has a long tail. Article 17 of the World Anti-Doping Code sets a ten-year limitation period for anti-doping rule violations, and athletes are advised to keep supplement, medication and treatment records across a career, because stored samples can be retested years after collection. That is a decade of logs that has to stay readable. We import the Open Food Facts ingredient set, roughly a gigabyte of database, so supplements and foods are logged against a local catalogue with barcode lookups rather than a remote service, and we keep nightly encrypted copies in a second datacenter. An athlete logs intake and body measurements daily, and the coach exports the whole history as a database dump whenever a governing body or a new team physician asks for it.

Screening is a cycle, not an intake form. NSCA guidance has athletes examined on entry to a programme and re-examined every two years, with a history and blood-pressure check in the intervening year, so the department needs the previous cycle's numbers to hand for hundreds of athletes years later. wger's custom measurement fields take whatever the testing battery produces and sit alongside weight and workout logs on one athlete timeline. We give each strength coach a trainer-role account so squads stay separated, keep self-registration closed so the roster matches the department's own list, and place the instance in the region the department asks for. A coach records the entry battery, the athlete trains against assigned routines, and the two-year re-test lands on the same timeline.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Three groups of questions, in the order people ask them: how the software is configured on our platform, what moving an existing instance involves, and how billing, support and the platform itself work. The first two are specific to wger; the third applies to every app we run.

01

Technical and configuration

Yes, for anything on a schedule. The exercise, image and ingredient sync tasks and the API cache warm-up all run through Celery with Redis as the broker. We run both alongside every instance, so you never configure a worker or a broker.
The full Open Food Facts ingredient set takes roughly a gigabyte of database space, which is why the upstream container ships with exercises but no ingredients. We import it on request and size the volume for it, so barcode lookups resolve against your own database instead of a remote service.
No. We close self-registration and guest accounts by default, so the only accounts are the ones your administrator creates. Studios and clinics almost always want that. If you are running an open community instance instead, tell us and we will switch registration back on.
Each instance gets its own secret key and its own token key pair, generated once and kept. The upstream default regenerates them at every restart, which silently logs everyone out and invalidates mobile sessions. Persisting them is one of the first things we set.
Yes. The Android and iOS clients let you enter your own server address and talk to the same REST API the web interface uses. After a major upgrade, update the app as well: client and server move together, and some releases have changed how the app syncs.
Yes. Terminal access and a file manager come with every instance, and we will produce a Postgres dump whenever you ask. If you would rather never open a shell, you do not have to.

02

Migration and onboarding

21 datacenter locations across six continents. You choose the region at provisioning. Application data sits in the region you choose; pick whichever is closest to your users or matches your data-residency preference.
Yes. Request a region migration from the dashboard and we run the move in the background. The system emails you when the migration completes; total transfer time depends on data volume but typical instances finish in a few hours. There is no extra charge for a region change.
Yes. Full data export is available at any time, in a portable format you can bring to any infrastructure.
Ask us. wger's own accounts cover most studios and clinics, and API tokens cover integrations. Where a customer needs identity handled elsewhere, we look at what is workable for that instance rather than promising a configuration the upstream project does not ship.

03

Billing, support, and platform

€9 covers everything we do for that app: hardware in the region you choose, daily off-site backups with one-click restore, automatic security patches and version upgrades, 24/7 monitoring, SSL and firewall, and engineering support on email and the ticket section in the client portal. There are no setup fees or hidden line items. For more info see our Pricing page.
If you decide to continue, we charge €9/app/month from day 8. If you don't, the trial ends and you can export your data. No card is required for the trial, and we never auto-charge you without explicit consent.
No. The €9/month is flat regardless of how many users log into your app. Add 5 users or 50; the price doesn't change.
24/7 email and ticket support, both staffed by engineers who run the systems. We handle DNS configuration, SMTP setup, app integrations, performance tuning, troubleshooting, and migration help. Response time is typically under an hour. There is no tier system — every customer gets the same support.
Yes. Cancel from the dashboard. We don't charge a cancellation fee, we don't lock data, and we will export your data to you on request before deletion. data to you on request before deletion.
Every customer instance is backed up daily to a separate region from the primary. We test restores. You can request a restore at any backup point within the retention window — usually 7 days for daily backups.
Your application data sits in the region you choose at provisioning — 21 datacenter locations across six continents. Account-level data (billing, account email, support ticket history) is processed centrally. Application data region is picked by you, per app.
