What is Wallabag

Wallabag saves the full text of any web page — article, blog post, documentation — and keeps it clean, searchable, and ad-free on every device. You own the archive, not a vendor, and it stays yours if you ever move.

Wallabag is released under the MIT licence and has been developed since 2013 by Nicolas Lœuillet with a community of 249 contributors. It is a PHP application built on the Symfony framework, and it extracts readable content using the Graby and php-readability engines guided by per-domain parsing rules. It runs on MySQL, PostgreSQL, or SQLite.

The project is widely deployed: the source repository has gathered roughly 12,500 stars, and the official container image has passed 50 million pulls. Wallabag ships official iOS and Android apps and a browser extension for one-click saving, and it exports to EPUB, PDF, JSON, CSV, TXT, and XML. Because it stores the full text rather than only a link, a saved page survives even when the original is taken down or moved behind a paywall.

WHY MANAGED

Why teams pick managed Wallabag

Mozilla shut down Pocket in July 2025 and deleted the remaining data that November. Omnivore closed a year earlier. Teams that lost a read-it-later service want one that cannot be taken away — and they do not want to run it themselves.

Running Wallabag yourself is more than installing it. The Symfony stack needs patching, certificates need renewing, the database needs backing up off-site, and outbound email needs an SMTP relay before two-factor codes and account messages will send. None of that is hard once. All of it is recurring, and it is the part people quietly stop doing after a few months.

The sharp edge shows up the day you import years of saved articles. Wallabag's import runs inside the web request, and on a default install with no queue worker a large Pocket export times out — often after only a few hundred articles — while a second attempt creates duplicates instead of resuming where it stopped. One person importing 32,000 saved pages hit repeated gateway timeouts and took roughly three hours over several runs before the job finished. The fix is a background worker and raised memory limits that a fresh install does not turn on.

Wallabag extracts content with Graby and php-readability, guided by per-domain site-config rules. JavaScript-heavy and paywalled pages can come back empty. For stubborn sites the browser extension sends the already-rendered page, and a site-config rule can be added for a domain you read often. We help tune these on request.
Partly. Site-config supports a login step with stored credentials, but only where the login form is in the initial page HTML rather than loaded later by script. Some subscription sites work after configuration; others cannot be made to work. We will tell you honestly which side a given site falls on.
Yes. Search covers the title, URL, and body of every saved article. On large instances we run Wallabag on PostgreSQL with proper indexing, so search stays responsive across tens of thousands of articles. We pick the database for the library size rather than leaving the default in place.
There are official iOS and Android apps, both free to download. They connect to your instance with its URL and an API token, then sync your articles for offline reading. They are companions to your hosted instance, not a separate account.
