ABOUT THE SOFTWARE

What is Twenty

Twenty is an open-source CRM and an alternative to Salesforce, HubSpot, and Pipedrive. You model companies, people, and opportunities, build pipelines, automate workflows, and connect AI assistants — on infrastructure you control rather than a vendor cloud.

Twenty is licensed under AGPL-3.0 and developed by the team at twentyhq, a Paris-based company from the Y Combinator 2023 batch, structured as a public benefit corporation. The project has more than 49,000 stars on GitHub, which makes it one of the most-starred CRM projects on the platform.

The application is written in TypeScript: a NestJS and GraphQL backend, a React frontend, a PostgreSQL database, a Redis cache, and a separate worker process for background jobs. Version 2.0 landed in April 2026 and added a native MCP server, letting tools like Claude and ChatGPT read and write CRM records in plain language.

Releases ship steadily across the 2.x line, and the data model is customisable at runtime, so the schema changes as your business does without a database migration written by hand.

FEATURES

What Twenty does

Twenty covers the core a sales team needs and adds a developer platform on top. You get pipelines and records out of the box, then custom objects, workflows, an API, and AI access when you want to go further. These are Twenty own capabilities, included on every plan.

Custom data model

Create objects, fields, and views from Settings without writing SQL or running migrations. Model Engagements, Properties, or Candidates the way your business actually works.

Pipeline views

View any object as an Airtable-style table or a Kanban board. Drag opportunities through stages and filter records by any field, including sub-fields like a currency amount.

Workflow automation

Build no-code workflows with triggers and actions. Add server-side logic functions in TypeScript when a workflow needs behaviour the visual builder cannot express.

Email and calendar sync

Connect Gmail, Google Calendar, or any IMAP and SMTP account. The worker syncs messages and events, and you can exclude personal or team-alias addresses from import.

GraphQL and REST API

Every object is exposed through a GraphQL and REST API with scoped API keys. Import or sync tens of thousands of records programmatically instead of by hand.

Apps and SDK

Scaffold an extension with create-twenty-app and ship custom objects, React components, and AI skills in TypeScript. Your workspace is backed by a git repo you can branch and roll back.

Native MCP server

Expose your workspace to any MCP client. Claude, ChatGPT, or Cursor can read and write records, enrich data, and draft follow-ups in plain language.

Roles and permissions

Assign roles, control object and field access, and run more than one workspace on a single instance. Twenty does not charge per user, so seats are unlimited.

WHAT'S ALWAYS INCLUDED

Every app. Fully managed.
Nothing extra to pay for.

Every app you deploy includes the full managed service — security, backups, updates, and support from day one.

Automatic updates and patches

Apps run the latest stable version. Security patches applied silently, with rollback if needed.

Daily off-site backups

Multiple daily backups in redundant off-site locations. One-click restore if anything goes wrong.

24/7 uptime monitoring

Continuous monitoring with instant alerting. We respond before you notice.

SSL, firewall, DDoS protection

Auto-renewing SSL, hardened firewall rules, DDoS mitigation on every deployment.

Performance and scaling

We monitor resource usage continuously. When your app needs more headroom, we flag it and upgrade with your explicit approval.

Dedicated engineering support

Real engineers by email and ticket. DNS, SMTP & migration help. All included in €9.

WHY MANAGED

Why teams pick managed Twenty

In August 2025 Salesforce raised prices on its Enterprise and Unlimited editions by about six percent, and renewal quotes have climbed since. A five-seat Sales Cloud plan now runs hundreds of dollars a month. Teams move to Twenty to escape per-seat math — then find that running it well is its own job.

Twenty is several moving parts, not one binary. The server, the React frontend, a PostgreSQL database, a Redis cache, and a separate worker all have to run together. The worker is the part most self-hosters forget. Without it, Gmail and calendar sync stall at Importing and never finish, and scheduled jobs never run.

The sharper edge is upgrades. Each Twenty workspace stores a version that has to match the application major and minor range. Skip too far ahead and you log in to a blank CRM with failed workspace migrations — a problem several self-hosters have hit on GitHub. We pin the version, run upgrades in the order Twenty supports, and verify the workspace migration completed before we call it done.

We also keep the APP_SECRET and encryption key stable and backed up. From version 2.5, Twenty encrypts stored secrets like OAuth tokens with that key; lose it and those secrets become unreadable. Small configuration choices like these are the difference between a CRM that just runs and a weekend lost to a broken upgrade.

USE CASES

Three teams who run Twenty on DANIAN

Twenty suits teams that want to own their pipeline data and shape the CRM around their own model. Three patterns come up most: a consultancy leaving a per-seat tool, a startup wiring AI into its pipeline, and an agency running one instance per client.

6-PERSON B2B CONSULTANCY

Leaving a per-seat CRM after the renewal quote doubled

A boutique advisory firm ran six seats on a commercial CRM. They deploy Twenty in the region nearest their clients, model Engagements and Deliverables as custom objects, and sync the team Gmail. One €9 instance replaces a bill that scaled with every new hire.

SALES-LED SAAS STARTUP

Wiring AI agents into the pipeline through MCP

A ten-person startup wanted its pipeline data in its own database, close to its product region. They connect Twenty MCP server to Claude to enrich leads and draft follow-ups, and expose records over the GraphQL API to billing. No per-seat fee as the team grows.

DIGITAL AGENCY

One isolated Twenty per client, on a custom domain

A marketing agency resells managed CRM to its clients. Each client gets a separate Twenty instance in its own container, on the client subdomain, so no client pipeline ever touches another. The agency adds €9 instances on demand and bills clients at its own rate.

COMPARISON

Four ways to run Twenty

Twenty itself is free and charges nothing per user. The real question is who runs the servers. Here is what each path costs at one, five, and ten users — and how much of your month it takes. Only the proprietary CRM bills per seat.

Path1 user5 users10 usersYour ops time / month
Proprietary SaaS — Salesforce Sales Cloud (Pro Suite, $100/user/mo)$100$500$1,000~0 hrs (vendor runs it)
Self-host on a $24/month production-class VPS~$44*~$44*~$44*5–10 hrs setup, then 1–2 hrs
Home server — HP ProLiant ML30 Gen10hardware + power†hardware + power†hardware + power†2–4 hrs
DANIAN managed hosting for Twenty€9€9€90 hrs

*VPS path adds object-storage backup and monitoring on top of the $24 rent, and the figure is flat because Twenty has no per-user fee. †Home-server hardware runs roughly €800–1,500 one-time, plus €17–32 electricity, business internet, and an off-site backup target each month. The three self-run paths are flat for unlimited users; the per-seat column only moves for the proprietary CRM.

BY INDUSTRY

Twenty for specific industries

Different industries put different demands on a CRM: how long records are kept, how client data is separated, and which systems it has to feed. These four put Twenty custom objects and data ownership to work in ways a generic per-seat CRM makes harder or more expensive.

Consultancies keep client correspondence and engagement records for years, and they need them recoverable, not locked inside a per-seat tool that bills for every adviser. On DANIAN, a consultancy runs Twenty in the datacenter region closest to its clients, with the PostgreSQL database backed up off-site every day so engagement history survives a bad import or a lost laptop. The firm models its own objects — Engagements, Deliverables, Renewals — without paying for a higher tier to add custom fields. Team Gmail and calendars sync through the worker so call notes and meetings land on the right record. A six-person firm replaces a CRM that cost a few hundred dollars a month at five or ten seats with one flat 9 euro instance and no per-adviser math.

Startups care about owning their pipeline data and keeping it portable, not handing customer records to a CRM they will have to migrate off later. On DANIAN, a startup runs Twenty in the region where its product database already lives, so latency between the CRM and internal systems stays low. The team wires Twenty native MCP server to an AI assistant to enrich leads and draft follow-ups, and exposes records over the GraphQL API to billing and product analytics. Custom objects track trials, plans, and expansion without a vendor-defined schema. Because Twenty charges nothing per user, the CRM cost stays flat as headcount climbs, while a ten-seat commercial plan would run about a thousand dollars a month at a mid tier.

Recruiters hold large volumes of candidate data and usually have retention windows after which records should be removed. On DANIAN, a staffing firm runs Twenty with candidate CVs and attachments routed to managed off-site object storage rather than a container-local folder, and the database backed up daily. The firm models Candidates, Roles, and Submissions as custom objects and works each role as a Kanban pipeline from sourced to placed. CSV import brings in existing candidate lists with automatic field matching, and the API keeps the CRM in sync with a careers site. A six-recruiter team pays one flat 9 euro instance instead of a per-recruiter seat fee that climbs with every desk added.

Agencies that resell CRM to clients need each client data kept separate, not pooled in one shared workspace. On DANIAN, an agency runs one Twenty instance per client, each in its own hardened container on the client subdomain, so one client pipeline never touches another. The agency shapes each instance with custom objects and views to match the client sales process, and connects the client Gmail through the worker. New client instances are added on demand at the same flat 9 euro floor, which the agency marks up to its own retail rate. Because Twenty has no per-user fee, an instance can hold the client whole team without changing the wholesale cost.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Everything teams ask before signing up, answered straight: what running Twenty involves, what migration onto DANIAN looks like, and how billing and support work.

Three groups: technical setup, migration, and how DANIAN works as a service.

01

Technical and configuration

From version 2.5, Twenty encrypts stored secrets like OAuth tokens with your encryption key. We generate that key once, store it securely, and back it up, so an upgrade or restart never leaves those secrets unreadable.
Yes. Twenty MCP server is exposed on your instance, so Claude, ChatGPT, or Cursor can read and write your records. We set the server and frontend URLs correctly so the connection resolves over your custom domain.
Yes. Custom objects, fields, views, and the GraphQL and REST API are all standard Twenty features and fully available. You create objects from Settings and generate scoped API keys yourself, with no tier gate on customisation.

02

Migration and onboarding

21 datacenter locations across six continents. You choose the region at provisioning. Application data sits in the region you choose; pick whichever is closest to your users or matches your data-residency preference.
Yes. Request a region migration from the dashboard and we run the move in the background. The system emails you when the migration completes; total transfer time depends on data volume but typical instances finish in a few hours. There is no extra charge for a region change.
Yes. Full data export is available at any time, in a portable format you can bring to any infrastructure.
Yes. Tell us the subdomain you want, like crm.yourcompany.com, and we handle the DNS records and the SSL certificate. If you would rather edit DNS yourself, we send the exact records to add.
Twenty ships often, and its apps framework lets a developer add custom objects and logic in TypeScript. If a gap is upstream, we tell you honestly rather than implying a workaround that does not exist.

03

Billing, support, and platform

€9 covers everything we do for that app: hardware in the region you choose, daily off-site backups with one-click restore, automatic security patches and version upgrades, 24/7 monitoring, SSL and firewall, and engineering support on email and the ticket section in the client portal. There are no setup fees or hidden line items. For more info see our Pricing page.
If you decide to continue, we charge €9/app/month from day 8. If you don't, the trial ends and you can export your data. No card is required for the trial, and we never auto-charge you without explicit consent.
No. The €9/month is flat regardless of how many users log into your app. Add 5 users or 50; the price doesn't change.
24/7 email and ticket support, both staffed by engineers who run the systems. We handle DNS configuration, SMTP setup, app integrations, performance tuning, troubleshooting, and migration help. Response time is typically under an hour. There is no tier system — every customer gets the same support.
Yes. Cancel from the dashboard. We don't charge a cancellation fee, we don't lock data, and we will export your data to you on request before deletion. data to you on request before deletion.
Every customer instance is backed up daily to a separate region from the primary. We test restores. You can request a restore at any backup point within the retention window — usually 7 days for daily backups.
Your application data sits in the region you choose at provisioning — 21 datacenter locations across six continents. Account-level data (billing, account email, support ticket history) is processed centrally. Application data region is picked by you, per app.
99.9% uptime SLA on every app, every tenant. Service credits are documented at danian.co/service-level-agreement. The status page is located at status.danian.co.
When your tenant approaches the resource ceiling — the base tier holds 1 vCPU/RAM, 30 GB storage — we notify you. Resource upgrades happen with your explicit consent; we will not upgrade your tenant or charge you without it.
We wait. We don't suspend the app or delete your data on the first failed charge. We email you, you fix the card on file, and we continue.
Invoices can be downloaded from the billing dashboard in PDF the day each charge succeeds. EU VAT is added where applicable and the VAT-reverse-charge regime applies for VAT-registered businesses with a valid number.
150+ open-source apps across automation, team chat, file sync, analytics, AI, password management, email marketing, dev tools, project management, smart home, CMS, and federated social. See the full catalog →
Yes. Every instance comes with a web-based terminal and a file manager in your DANIAN management dashboard. Useful for managing your data and customizations.
Resources scale with your usage. If your app needs more vCPU, RAM, or storage, we add it — and we ask first before any change to your plan. €9 is the floor; resource-heavy workloads may price higher, but you'll always know in advance.
Yes. We have both a Partner program and an Affiliate program available. Anybody can sign up.
No contract. No minimum commitment. Cancel anytime from the dashboard with one click. The 7-day free trial requires no credit card. After the trial converts to paid, you can still cancel at any month without notice or penalty.
