TeamSpeak Server is a proprietary, free-to-use voice server from TeamSpeak Systems GmbH in Bavaria. It runs on Linux, uses Opus voice and music codecs, and gives admins a five-tier permission model deeper than Discord, Mumble, or modern SaaS chat. Twenty-four years on, it remains the comms tier gaming clans, ARMA milsim units, flight-sim wings, and esports teams still trust in 2026.

ABOUT THE SOFTWARE

What is Teamspeak Server

TeamSpeak Server is a closed-source, free-to-use voice server from TeamSpeak Systems GmbH. It pairs an Opus-codec voice engine with a deep five-tier permission model and a ServerQuery automation API. Free tier covers 32 slots and one virtual server.

TeamSpeak Systems GmbH is registered at the District Court of Munich under HRB 172523, with operations based in Krün, Bavaria. TeamSpeak 6 Server is in open beta on GitHub at teamspeak/teamspeak6-server.

On Linux, the daemon is small — about 15 MB on disk, 60 MB RAM for a typical 32-slot deployment, scaling to roughly 8 kbps per active speaker. Adoption skews to competitive gaming, ARMA and DCS milsim, flight simulation, podcast recording, and online language tutoring. The non-profit license (NPL) closed to new applicants in September 2018; existing holders still renew.

FEATURES

What Teamspeak Server does

TeamSpeak Server runs persistent voice channels for groups that need controllable comms — clans, classrooms, broadcast booths. It supports up to 1,024 slots on paid licenses, Opus voice and music codecs, an SSH-secured automation API, and integration with simulation radio plugins like TFAR and ACRE2.

Opus voice and music codecs

Opus Voice tops at 45.2 kbit/s nominal; Opus Music tops at 79.2 kbit/s stereo. Both are RFC 6716 standard codecs with low encode latency.

ServerQuery automation API

Manage virtual servers, channels, clients, and bans over a raw TCP or SSH connection. The integration surface for Ranksystem, JTS3ServerMod, and custom bots.

File transfer per channel

Upload icons, sound packs, mission briefings, and recordings to a per-channel file vault. Storage quota and per-user permissions enforced server-side.

Customisable badges and icons

Server-side icon library, per-group badges, custom welcome message, and host banner. Branding survives client updates without re-uploading from each member.

Five-tier permission model

Server group, client, channel, channel group, channel-client. The matrix is deeper than any competing voice platform and survives 200-member rosters without flattening.

Channel-group templates

Reusable permission templates for tutors, casters, NCOs, and channel admins. Apply once at server level; inherit cleanly through sub-channels when defaults are set correctly.

TFAR and ACRE2 radio integration

Plugins for ARMA 3 (TFAR) and ACRE2 route in-game radios through TeamSpeak channels. Long-range, short-range, and intercom on separate frequencies.

Multi-platform clients

Native clients for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. TeamSpeak 6 clients add screen-share, text channels, and end-to-end encryption.

WHY MANAGED

Why teams pick managed Teamspeak Server

On October 9, 2025 Discord disclosed that a third-party support vendor had been breached, exposing roughly 70,000 users' government-ID photos. In February 2026 Discord announced — then delayed — a global age-verification rollout. Adult clan and milsim communities started moving back to TeamSpeak that quarter.

Running TeamSpeak yourself is straightforward until the embedded license expires. Every server binary ships with a hard-coded ending date inside licensekey.dat. When the date passes, the daemon refuses to start with CRITICAL | Accounting | The default license has expired. It happened to hundreds of admins on September 2, 2025. It will keep happening because TeamSpeak deliberately rotates the embedded license to force the ecosystem onto current binaries.

The other failures self-hosters trip over are the ServerQuery surface — TCP/10011 raw, exposed by default, regularly targeted by botnets running anonymous query scans — and the channel-group inheritance footgun, where a default channel-admin override silently clobbers the parent group on every sub-channel created.

We run TeamSpeak with the license-expiry watched on a calendar, ServerQuery bound to localhost with SSH/10022 for authorised bots, and the channel-admin default set to Guest so inheritance behaves the way new admins expect. We tune anti-flood thresholds upward so a Ranksystem instance does not ban itself. We pin nightly off-tenant snapshots to cover the SQLite database, the files/ directory, and ts3server.ini.

USE CASES

Three teams who run Teamspeak Server on DANIAN

These are representative team types we set up most often. Each starts with the same flat €9 plan.

30-PERSON ARMA 3 MILSIM UNIT

Sub-30ms voice across Germany, Poland, and the Netherlands

Germany region. 32 slots, TFAR plugin for in-game radios. Opus Voice quality 7 in command channels, Opus Music quality 6 in the briefing room for after-action review. JTS3ServerMod handles AFK-move. ServerQuery whitelisted to the unit's roster-sync webhook. Composite scenario based on documented ARMA milsim configurations.

ONLINE IELTS TUTORING SCHOOL

Classroom breakouts with recording revoked from non-staff

UK region. 32 slots, 12 classroom channels with nightly-rotated passwords. Channel-admin inheritance set to Guest so a student creating a sub-channel does not inherit admin rights. b_client_record revoked from all non-staff groups. Custom domain via SRV record. Composite scenario based on online-tutoring deployment patterns.

280-MEMBER EUROTRUCK VTC CONVOY

Persistent radio for 8-hour driving sessions on tethered LTE

Poland region, 48 slots. Opus Voice quality 4 — about 25 kbps — survives bad cellular signal without dropping intelligibility. Forced push-to-talk, talk-power tiered for the convoy lead. TSN-Ranksystem awards rank server-groups by accumulated voice-time. Composite scenario based on VTC community patterns.

COMPARISON

Four ways to run Teamspeak Server

Four real paths to a TeamSpeak voice tier in 2026: stay on Discord with paid boosts and Nitro to reach comparable audio fidelity, self-host on a production VPS, build a home server, or run it managed on DANIAN. Every honest tally favours the managed path at this scale.

 PATH1 USER5 USERS 10 USERSNOTES
 Discord (proprietary SaaS)
Free voice, paid quality and branding
~$10/mo~$15–35/mo~$70/moMatching TS audio fidelity needs Nitro plus boosts (Level 1 = 2 boosts; Level 3 = 14 boosts at $4.99 each). Voice metadata visible to the platform.

The maths holds at every scale. Once you cross the 5-seat mark on Discord, or accept that an unattended VPS will eventually go silent when the embedded license expires, the €9 line stops feeling like a coincidence.

BY INDUSTRY

Teamspeak Server for specific industries

Four industries where TeamSpeak Server fits the operational shape better than a SaaS chat client — esports and gaming clans, defense and milsim training, online education and language tutoring, and broadcasting and podcasting. Each places specific demands on the audio path and permissions matrix.

ESL Play's anti-cheat rules explicitly allow "all external voice programs (e.g. Teamspeak, Ventrilo etc.)" — TeamSpeak is the documented voice tier in competitive Counter-Strike, the European esports circuit, and clan-league play. ESEA's "solidarity" club rules at esea.net/club/112 require members verbatim: "MUST JOIN TEAMSPEAK- s.teamspeak3.com (Use your ESEA names in TS)."

DANIAN ships a Match Comms channel-group preset with i_channel_needed_join_power raised so casuals can't drop into an active scrim, and a Caster server-group with b_client_is_priority_speaker granted. Workflow: roster auto-syncs from a club CSV via SSH ServerQuery; a TSN-Ranksystem instance tracks seat-time across the season. Opus Voice tops out at 45.2 kbit/s nominal — roughly three times the audio fidelity of an unboosted Discord server, and a noticeable difference for callers under fire.
TeamSpeak Systems GmbH is registered in Munich (HRB 172523) and operates from Krün, Bavaria — a German legal jurisdiction, not a US-extraterritorial reach. ITAR (22 CFR 120-130) restricts technical-data exchange about US-controlled defense articles; private milsim and contractor training units prefer comms platforms that do not admit US law-enforcement requests over voice metadata.

DANIAN configures a milsim tenant with channel_codec_is_unencrypted="0" enforced server-wide (per-packet AES voice payload), ServerQuery bound to localhost, and file-transfer port 30033 closed by default. Workflow: TFAR or ACRE2 plugin routes in-game radio frequencies; players are auto-moved into mission channels at op start; AAR channel is captured to a per-op database snapshot. Current default-license tracking keeps the daemon from going dark mid-operation — the failure mode that hit hundreds of self-hosted admins on September 2, 2025.
FERPA (20 U.S.C. § 1232g) governs the privacy of student educational records in the US; recording-consent law varies by jurisdiction across the EU, UK, and beyond. Recording student voice without explicit consent is contested ground, and a SaaS chat platform with default-on recording is the wrong shape for a class.

DANIAN's default configuration disables server-side recording, revokes b_client_record from non-staff groups, and sets channel-admin inheritance to Guest — the single most-asked permissions footgun on the official forums. Per-class virtual channels can be auto-created from a calendar feed via SSH ServerQuery. Workflow: instructor joins → JTS3ServerMod auto-grants the Tutor server-group based on a UID whitelist; idle-warning at 25 minutes triggers a "still there?" push; temporary class channels flush after session. A 32-slot tenant runs comfortably in ~60 MB RAM at roughly 8 kbps per active speaker.
Opus is RFC 6716, the IETF-standardised low-latency codec also used in WhatsApp and Discord; broadcasting masters typically target ITU-R BS.1770-4 / EBU R128 at −23 LUFS. TeamSpeak is one of the few self-hosted voice servers that exposes the codec quality knob explicitly per channel rather than hiding it behind a "voice quality" slider.

DANIAN provisions a dedicated Studio channel with channel_codec="5" (Opus Music) at channel_codec_quality="10" — the 79.2 kbit/s stereo ceiling the server allows. Per-channel codec is set via ServerQuery channeledit. Workflow: host sits in Studio with b_client_record granted only to one host UID; channel description carries the loudness target; TSN-Ranksystem's Channelinfo Toplist displays per-speaker time across the take. One host pays €9 to DANIAN; matching the same audio fidelity on Discord requires Level-2 or Level-3 boosts at $35–70/month plus Nitro on the recording side.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Everything teams ask before signing up — answered straight, without sales speak.

Three groups: technical setup, migration, and how DANIAN works as a service.

01

Technical and configuration

The TeamSpeak binary ships with a hard-coded license ending date. When it passes, the daemon refuses to start. We track the date per-tenant and roll the binary forward before it expires. The current 3.13.7 default license is valid until July 1, 2027.
TeamSpeak's "Default Channel Admin Group" is set at the virtual-server level and overrides parent-channel inheritance. We pin it to Guest by default so sub-channel creators inherit the parent's permissions cleanly. You can change it under Edit Virtual Server → More → Misc if you want the old behaviour.
Yes. We pre-whitelist your bot egress IP in query_ip_whitelist.txt and raise serverinstance_serverquery_flood_commands from the default 10-per-3-seconds to a level that suits Ranksystem and JTS3ServerMod.
No. The TS6 server README states explicitly that TS3 licenses are not compatible and no migration path exists. Channels, permissions, server groups, and the database schema all change. Plan a parallel deployment if you want to move, not an in-place upgrade.
Opus Voice tops at 45.2 kbit/s nominal (quality 10). Opus Music tops at 79.2 kbit/s stereo (quality 10). We tune the codec per channel — Opus Voice quality 7 in command channels, Opus Music quality 10 in broadcast and studio channels.

02

Migration and onboarding

We can activate your app on your own custom domain/subdomain. Examples: mydomain.com, anyword.mydomain.com.
Or, on our randomized free subdomain. Example: 963.apps.danian.cloud
If you wish to use a custom domain/subdomain, select that option when ordering your app (or notify us later). We will send you the required DNS records and if needed, our tech team will modify them for you.
21 datacenter locations across six continents. You choose the region at provisioning. Application data sits in the region you choose; pick whichever is closest to your users or matches your data-residency preference.
Yes. Request a region migration from the dashboard and we run the move in the background. The system emails you when the migration completes; total transfer time depends on data volume but typical instances finish in a few hours. There is no extra charge for a region change.
Yes. Full data export is available at any time, in a portable format you can bring to any infrastructure.
We can hold and apply a license you purchase directly from TeamSpeak Systems. Free 32-slot operation is included by default. If you outgrow the free tier we walk you through buying an annual activation key — current TeamSpeak pricing runs from $55/year for 64 slots up to $500/year for 1,024 slots.
The plugins live on the client side, not the server, so any TeamSpeak server works with them — including yours. We tune the channel layout, codec quality, and channel-group templates to match the radio mod you are running.

03
