ABOUT THE SOFTWARE

What is Rybbit

Rybbit is an open-source analytics platform for websites and products. It reports traffic, funnels, journeys, goals and errors from a single dashboard, and it identifies visitors without cookies, so the default setup needs no consent prompt on most sites.

The project is published under the AGPL-3.0 licence, which is the strongest of the commonly used open-source licences: anyone offering the software over a network must make the corresponding source available. Under the hood it is five moving parts: a ClickHouse column store for the event rows, PostgreSQL for accounts and site settings, a Next.js dashboard, an ingestion service and a reverse proxy. The tracking script visitors download is roughly eighteen kilobytes and makes one request.

What separates it from the rest of the cookieless analytics field is that nothing is held back from the open edition. Funnels, user journeys, session replay, retention analysis, organisations, teams and the query API are all in the licensed source. The documented memory floor is 2 GB, and the column store expects the SSE 4.2 instruction set on x86 processors, two numbers that decide whether a self-managed install runs or crash-loops.

FEATURES

What Rybbit does

Rybbit covers the ground that usually takes two products: the traffic reporting a marketer opens every morning, and the funnel, journey and replay tooling a product team needs. Everything below is in the open edition and available on a managed instance.

Live traffic dashboard

Sessions, pageviews, referrers, entry and exit pages and device breakdowns update in real time, with a world view down to country, region and city level.

Funnels

Define an ordered set of pages or events and see where people leave. Steps can mix pageviews and custom events, so a checkout and a signup use the same tool.

User journeys

Path analysis over real sessions rather than a modelled average, showing the routes visitors actually take through the site and where those routes fork.

Session replay

Recorded sessions played back in the browser, with text masking rules so form fields and selected elements never leave the page in readable form.

Goals, events and properties

Named conversions plus custom events carrying a JSON payload. Common interactions such as clicks, form submissions and outbound links can be captured without extra code.

Error tracking and page vitals

JavaScript exceptions are collected next to the traffic that produced them, alongside loading, layout-shift and responsiveness measurements for each page.

Attribution and campaign reporting

Campaign parameters and referrers are parsed into a source report, so a newsletter, an ad and an organic link are separable without tagging every URL by hand.

Organisations, teams and a query API

Unlimited sites under one instance, grouped into organisations with per-site access, public or embeddable dashboards, and a bearer-key API over the underlying rows.

WHAT'S ALWAYS INCLUDED

Every app. Fully managed.
Nothing extra to pay for.

Every app on DANIAN ships with the same operational baseline. You do not choose a backup add-on or a monitoring tier. Hosting, patching, backups, SSL, and support are part of the €9, and they apply to Rybbit the same way they apply to everything else in the catalog.

Automatic updates and patches

Apps run the latest stable version. Security patches applied silently, with rollback if needed.

Daily off-site backups

Multiple daily backups in redundant off-site locations. One-click restore if anything goes wrong.

24/7 uptime monitoring

Continuous monitoring with instant alerting. We respond before you notice.

SSL, firewall, DDoS protection

Auto-renewing SSL, hardened firewall rules, DDoS mitigation on every deployment.

Performance and scaling

We monitor resource usage continuously. When your app needs more headroom, we flag it and upgrade with your explicit approval.

Dedicated engineering support

Real engineers by email and ticket. DNS, SMTP & migration help. All included in €9.

WHY MANAGED

Why teams pick managed Rybbit

In June 2026 a United States Supreme Court ruling on the removal of Federal Trade Commission members put the transatlantic data-transfer arrangement back under review. Site owners who had stopped asking where their visitor logs physically land started asking again, and self-hosted analytics moved back onto shortlists.

Deciding to run your own analytics is the easy half. The half that shows up later is operational: a column store that grows without asking, an upgrade path across several services that have to move together, certificates, backups that have actually been restored once, and someone awake when ingestion stops on a campaign day. None of that is analytics work. All of it is the price of the decision.

The failure mode that catches most self-managed instances is session replay. The project documents a single replay as more than a thousand times the storage footprint of an ordinary pageview event, and the shipped retention window is thirty days. Leave both alone on a modest disk and the volume fills, the column store stops accepting writes, and the first symptom is a dashboard that quietly stops updating. The second trap is quieter: the compose file ships placeholder database passwords, and a surprising number of public instances still run with them.

We set those knobs before you ever see the dashboard. The replay retention window is chosen at provisioning rather than inherited, the column store's memory ceiling is sized against the container's own limit rather than the host's, and credentials are generated per instance. Instances only run on host profiles that expose the instruction set the column store needs, so the crash loop that fills the project's issue tracker cannot happen here.

USE CASES

Three teams who run Rybbit on DANIAN

Analytics buyers rarely arrive because they want analytics. They arrive because a bill moved, a consent prompt became a conversion problem, or a question about user behaviour could not be answered. These three shapes turn up most often.

SIX-PERSON DIRECT-TO-CONSUMER BRAND

Dropping the consent prompt before peak season

Moved off a tag-managed setup where the cookie prompt was measurably costing sessions. Instance runs in the location nearest the warehouse, script served from a subdomain of the shop so blocklists do not eat it, and a four-step checkout funnel wired to the cart and thank-you events.

TWO-TITLE INDEPENDENT PUBLISHER

Numbers an ad buyer will accept

Bot filtering on, crawler traffic excluded before it reaches the reports, and event retention set to cover a full sales year so year-on-year inventory claims hold up. Monthly figures leave as CSV and go straight into the media kit without a reconciliation step.

FOUR-PERSON PRODUCT STUDIO

Three apps, one dashboard, one bill

All three products sit as separate sites under a single organisation on one instance, so the €9 does not multiply. Signup-to-activation funnels per product, session replay kept on a short window, and the query API pulling weekly numbers into the studio's own review document.

COMPARISON

Four ways to run Rybbit

Analytics products are priced by traffic, not by seat, so the honest comparison runs along monthly event volume. The three columns below are the same site growing. Only one of the four paths keeps a flat number all the way across.

How you run it100k events / month200k events / month500k events / monthWhat you operate
Proprietary hosted analytics (Fathom Analytics)No funnels, no session replay, no access to the underlying rows.$15/month$25/month$45/monthNothing to run. Custom events count against the same allowance.
Self-host on a production-class VPSAbout $24/month for the machine, plus the memory headroom the column store wants.$24/month + your time$24/month + your time$48/month + your timeUpdates, certificates, backups, restore tests, retention tuning, on-call.
Home serverA 16 GB mini-PC at roughly $250 one-time, plus power and a way in from outside.~$250 once~$250 once + disk~$250 once + diskEverything above, plus your own uptime, your own power and your own network.
DANIAN managed RybbitFlat, whatever the traffic does. Unlimited sites on the instance.€9/month€9/month€9/monthNothing. Backups, updates, monitoring, certificates and support included.

The two self-run paths are cheaper on paper at low traffic and stop being cheaper the moment an evening is spent on them. The hosted product is the closest comparison on effort, and the gap that matters there is not price but reach: no replay, no funnels and no route to the raw rows.

BY INDUSTRY

Rybbit for specific industries

What a team needs from analytics changes with what it sells. A shop cares about a broken checkout step, a publisher cares about traffic an advertiser will believe, an agency cares about keeping clients apart. Four cases where those demands shape the setup.

Shops carry the cookie-consent rule in the ePrivacy Directive as a conversion problem, not a paperwork problem: the prompt sits between a visitor and the first product page. Rybbit counts sessions from a rotating hash of address and user agent instead of a stored identifier, so the default setup needs no prompt on most storefronts. On a managed instance we serve the tracking script from a subdomain of the shop itself, which keeps blocklists from silently removing part of your traffic. A typical setup is a four-step funnel from product page to cart to checkout to order confirmation, with the cart event carrying order value as a property. The script is around eighteen kilobytes and one request, which matters when the same page is already carrying a payment widget and a review script.

Publishers sell against numbers someone else checks, so the measurement guidance ad buyers work from treats invalid traffic filtering as the baseline, not a refinement. Rybbit ships bot blocking that matches on network operator, user agent and header patterns, and we turn it on before your first reporting month rather than after a buyer queries a spike. On a managed instance we set event retention to cover a full sales year so year-on-year inventory claims survive scrutiny, while trimming the session replay window separately, because replays carry more than a thousand times the storage weight of a pageview row. The monthly workflow is a CSV export of pages and referrers that drops into the media kit without a reconciliation pass.

The operational standard in agency work is separation: one client should never see another client's numbers, and the reporting a client receives should not require them to hold a login they will lose. One managed Rybbit instance carries unlimited sites, grouped into organisations with per-site access for staff, and each client site can expose a read-only dashboard the client opens without an account. We set the exclusion lists so agency office addresses and staging hostnames never enter client reports, which is the single most common source of a client asking why their traffic doubled in the week before launch. Commercially the shape is simple: the instance is €9 a month whether it carries three client sites or forty.

Product teams run to a weekly activation review, and that meeting fails when the funnel numbers and the marketing numbers come from two tools that disagree. Rybbit puts the marketing site and the product behind the same instance, with funnels that mix pageviews and custom events so signup, first action and activation sit in one chart. Identified users can carry traits, so a funnel splits by plan or acquisition source without a second product. On a managed instance we keep session replay on a short window and event rows on a long one, because replay is what fills disks and aggregate rows are what the quarterly review needs. The query API pulls the same numbers into whatever document the review actually happens in.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Three groups below. The first covers how Rybbit behaves on a managed instance and what we set differently from a default install. The second covers getting off your current tool. The third covers billing, support and the platform itself.

01

Technical and configuration

The project documents 2 GB of memory as the floor, and that floor assumes light traffic. We provision above it and cap the column store's memory ceiling against the container's own limit rather than the host's. That single setting is what turns a busy afternoon into a restart loop on a self-managed box.
The project's own documentation puts one session replay at more than a thousand times the storage footprint of an ordinary pageview event, and the shipped retention window is thirty days. On a small volume that fills the disk, and the column store stops accepting writes without much warning.
We choose it at provisioning instead of leaving the shipped thirty-day window in place, and we will change it on request. Ordinary pageview and event rows keep a longer window than replays do, because they are small and they are what your reporting actually depends on.
No. It derives a visitor identifier from a hash of the address and user agent rather than storing anything in the browser. Switching on identifier salting rotates that hash daily, so a visitor cannot be followed from one day to the next.
No, and this surprises people. The column store needs the SSE 4.2 instruction set on x86 and ARMv8.2-A or newer on ARM, which is why the same container starts on one machine and crash-loops on another. We run instances only on host profiles that expose it.
No. Funnels, user journeys, session replay, retention analysis, goals, organisations and the query API are all in the licensed source.
Yes. Rybbit blocks bots by network operator, user agent and header pattern, and keeps exclusion lists for addresses, countries, paths, hostnames and user agents. We load your office addresses and staging hostnames into those lists before your first reporting day.

02

Migration and onboarding

21 datacenter locations across six continents. You choose the region at provisioning. Application data sits in the region you choose; pick whichever is closest to your users or matches your data-residency preference.
Yes. Request a region migration from the dashboard and we run the move in the background. The system emails you when the migration completes; total transfer time depends on data volume but typical instances finish in a few hours. There is no extra charge for a region change.
Yes. Full data export is available at any time, in a portable format you can bring to any infrastructure.
Rybbit ships importers for Simple Analytics and Umami. Other tools are not covered by a first-party importer, so most teams run Rybbit alongside the existing tag for one reporting cycle and keep the old platform's export as the historical archive.
One script tag in the page head, or a package for React, Vue, Angular and Next.js projects, or a tag pushed through your existing tag manager. Common content platforms have their own integration guides. We can hand you the snippet with your instance hostname already filled in.
Yes, and it is the sensible way to switch. Both tags fire on the same page, the numbers diverge for predictable reasons such as bot filtering and blocked scripts, and after a cycle you have a like-for-like comparison to base the cutover on.
You take it. The dashboard exports reports as CSV and the query API reaches the underlying rows with a bearer key. Ask us and we will hand over a dump of the column store and the PostgreSQL database. Nothing about the exit is designed to be slow.

03

Billing, support, and platform

€9 covers everything we do for that app: hardware in the region you choose, daily off-site backups with one-click restore, automatic security patches and version upgrades, 24/7 monitoring, SSL and firewall, and engineering support on email and the ticket section in the client portal. There are no setup fees or hidden line items. For more info see our Pricing page.
If you decide to continue, we charge €9/app/month from day 8. If you don't, the trial ends and you can export your data. No card is required for the trial, and we never auto-charge you without explicit consent.
No. The €9/month is flat regardless of how many users log into your app. Add 5 users or 50; the price doesn't change.
24/7 email and ticket support, both staffed by engineers who run the systems. We handle DNS configuration, SMTP setup, app integrations, performance tuning, troubleshooting, and migration help. Response time is typically under an hour. There is no tier system — every customer gets the same support.
