ABOUT THE SOFTWARE

What is Prosody

Prosody is an XMPP server written in Lua and published under the MIT licence. It handles messaging, group rooms, presence, file transfer and call signalling for a domain you own, and federates with every other server on the open XMPP network.

The project has been developed by the Prosody team since 2008 and is known for a small runtime footprint. Operators report servers holding a few hundred server-to-server connections inside a couple of hundred megabytes of memory, which is why it fits on hardware other messaging servers will not. The MIT licence carries no hosting clause, no network-use clause and no contributor agreement to sign.

Features arrive as modules. Message archive management, group rooms, HTTP file sharing, stream resumption, mobile push and external call-relay discovery all ship in the core distribution, and a large community module repository covers everything from directory-backed authentication to anti-spam policy. The same server powers the signalling layer inside Jitsi Meet and the Snikket project, and it runs the XMPP Standards Foundation's own domain.

FEATURES

What Prosody does

Prosody covers what a messaging domain needs: private and group conversations, files, presence, and the signalling that voice and video calls run on. Clients are yours to choose, since anything that speaks XMPP will connect.

Direct messaging with archive sync

One-to-one conversations, with server-side message archiving so a new phone catches up on history instead of starting empty. Carbon copies keep every logged-in device showing the same thread.

Group rooms with moderation

Persistent multi-user rooms with owners, moderators, invitations and member lists. Rooms keep their own history, so someone joining a project room mid-week can read what they missed.

HTTP file sharing

Files and images upload over HTTPS and are handed to recipients as links. Size limits, per-user daily quotas and automatic expiry are all set at the server rather than left to the client.

Federation with other servers

Your domain talks to any other XMPP domain over the server-to-server port. Partner organisations keep their own servers and their own admins, and conversations still cross the boundary.

Stream resumption for mobile links

Connections that drop in a lift or on a train resume instead of reconnecting from scratch, and messages sent during the gap are delivered rather than lost. This is the feature that makes XMPP usable on bad links.

Mobile push notifications

A push module hands notification duty to a gateway when a phone suspends its connection, which is the only way notifications keep arriving on mobile operating systems that kill background sockets.

Voice and video signalling

Call setup between clients, plus discovery of the relay service that carries media when both parties sit behind home or office routers. The media itself never touches the messaging server.

Accounts, roles and storage backends

Account creation, a roles and permissions model for administrators.

WHAT'S ALWAYS INCLUDED

Every app. Fully managed.
Nothing extra to pay for.

Every app on DANIAN ships with the same operational baseline. You do not choose a backup add-on or a monitoring tier. Hosting, patching, backups, SSL, and support are part of the €9, and they apply to Prosody the same way they apply to everything else in the catalog.

Automatic updates and patches

Apps run the latest stable version. Security patches applied silently, with rollback if needed.

Daily off-site backups

Multiple daily backups in redundant off-site locations. One-click restore if anything goes wrong.

24/7 uptime monitoring

Continuous monitoring with instant alerting. We respond before you notice.

SSL, firewall, DDoS protection

Auto-renewing SSL, hardened firewall rules, DDoS mitigation on every deployment.

Performance and scaling

We monitor resource usage continuously. When your app needs more headroom, we flag it and upgrade with your explicit approval.

Dedicated engineering support

Real engineers by email and ticket. DNS, SMTP & migration help. All included in €9.

WHY MANAGED

Why teams pick managed Prosody

Interoperability rules now force the largest chat platforms to open their networks to outside services, and XMPP is the protocol most often named in that conversation. Teams that were waiting for a reason to own their messaging domain suddenly have one.

Installing Prosody is the short part. What follows is the domain name surface. XMPP needs SRV records for the client port and the server port, and it needs a certificate that covers not only your base domain but the conference, upload and proxy subdomains that group rooms and file sharing run on. Get one of those wrong and the symptom is not an error page: remote servers quietly refuse to federate with you, and nobody outside your domain can reach anyone inside it.

The renewal path bites even harder. A certificate that renews on disk is not a certificate Prosody is using. The server needs the new files imported and the right listeners reloaded, and the classic failure is a server where chat carries on working perfectly while file uploads start failing with an expired certificate, because the HTTPS listener kept the old one. That gap can sit unnoticed for weeks, since the person who notices is a user sending a photo, not a monitoring check.

USE CASES

Three teams who run Prosody on DANIAN

The teams that move to a managed XMPP domain tend to share one of three reasons: a per-seat bill that outgrew the value, a need to federate with partners, or a requirement to keep conversations on a domain they control.

9-PERSON ADVOCACY GROUP

Moving off a per-seat tool that had started hiding last quarter

Nine staff, most of them working from phones on unreliable connections. Registration is closed and accounts are issued by the office manager. The archive window is short by choice, uploads expire after a week, and end-to-end encryption is handled by the clients, so the server holds ciphertext it cannot read.

12-PERSON SOFTWARE CO-OP

One server for team chat and for meeting signalling

The same domain carries day-to-day rooms and the signalling layer behind their meeting service. Two partner domains are federated, so client work happens in shared rooms without either side issuing guest accounts.

40-USER COMMUNITY SERVER

A volunteer admin who wanted the ops work to stop

Invite-only accounts for a hobby community, one room per interest group, and upload quotas tight enough that a single enthusiastic poster cannot fill the disk. The admin kept the moderation work and handed over certificates, updates and backups.

COMPARISON

Four ways to run Prosody

A messaging domain can be bought as a product, rented as a virtual machine, kept on a shelf at home, or handed to someone else to run. The costs diverge quickly, and so does the amount of your week that the choice consumes.

Path1 user5 users10 usersWhat you also take on
Proprietary chat product (Slack Pro)$7.25/mo$36.25/mo$72.50/moPer-seat billing, history and export bounded by your plan, no federation with outside domains, no control over where messages sit.
Self-host on a production-class VPS$24/mo$24/mo$24/moYou own DNS records, certificate renewal and import, module updates, archive retention, upload quotas, backups and the call relay.
Home server (Raspberry Pi 5, 8 GB, plus SSD)~180 euro once, plus power~180 euro once, plus power~180 euro once, plus powerResidential addresses, inbound ports and reverse DNS make federation and mail-style deliverability fragile. Power cuts are your outages.
DANIAN managed Prosody9 euro/mo9 euro/mo9 euro/moCertificates, DNS guidance, updates, backups, monitoring, retention settings and the call relay are ours. Support is included.

One honest note on the first row: a proprietary chat product is finished, and Prosody is a server plus the clients you choose. You trade a polished single app for an open protocol, a domain you own and a flat bill. At ten people the per-seat path costs roughly eight times the managed path, and the gap widens with every hire.

BY INDUSTRY

Prosody for specific industries

XMPP tends to be chosen where messaging has to cross an organisational boundary, survive a bad network, or sit on a domain the organisation controls. These four sectors put those demands on the server in different ways.

Clinical messaging is governed by record-retention rules rather than by chat features, and in the Netherlands the NTA 7532 requirement set is the reference point for secure exchange between care providers. That makes retention a configuration decision rather than a vendor default.

For care organisations we set the archive expiry to the retention period the regulator sets rather than leaving it unbounded, keep registration closed so accounts trace back to a named clinician, and restrict federation to the partner domains you name. A typical shape is one persistent room per ward for shift handover, with the outgoing shift leaving notes that the incoming shift reads from history rather than from a phone call. File uploads carry an expiry measured in days, so images shared during a handover do not accumulate on the server indefinitely.

Universities have run XMPP domains for years, and several still operate public endpoints. The governing document is usually the institution's own record-retention and acceptable-use policy, which sets how long student conversations are kept and who may open an account.

For teaching institutions we keep open registration off so accounts come from the institution rather than from the internet, and set the archive expiry to the length of a term rather than to forever. The common pattern is one persistent room per course, created at the start of term and archived at the end, with a separate room per project group inside it. Because Prosody federates, a joint course run with another institution works without either side issuing guest accounts to the other. One server on modest resources comfortably carries a department.

Organisations working on sensitive material usually operate under an internal information-handling policy that dictates what may be stored and for how long. The Software Freedom Conservancy and the Free Software Foundation Europe both run public XMPP endpoints, and the pattern is well established in the sector.

For these organisations we set a short archive window by default, cap file uploads with a seven-day expiry, close registration entirely, and restrict federation to named partner domains. End-to-end encryption is handled by the clients, which means the server stores ciphertext it cannot read, and a subpoena served on the host produces very little. Field staff working on intermittent mobile connections rely on stream resumption, which delivers messages sent during a dropout instead of losing them at the point the connection died.

Prosody is the signalling layer inside Jitsi Meet, which is why teams building a meeting service reach for it rather than for a general chat product. Two published extensions matter here: external service discovery, which hands relay credentials to clients, and stream management, which keeps a participant's session alive across a network hiccup.

For meeting platforms we attach the call relay and advertise it through external service discovery, so clients behind office routers negotiate media without a manual credential exchange. Rooms map to meetings, and the text sidebar of a call runs on the same server as the signalling rather than on a second system. The signalling layer is light: a two-vCPU instance carries a busy meeting service, because the media itself never passes through the messaging server at all.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Three groups of questions below: how the server is configured and what it supports, how an existing domain moves here, and how billing, support and the platform itself work. Everything is answered on the page rather than behind a form.

01

Technical and configuration

Any XMPP client. Conversations and Monal cover Android and iOS, Gajim and Dino cover desktop, and browser clients work over the websocket endpoint. We do not ship a client of our own, so nobody is locked into one app.
Rooms run on a conference subdomain covered by the same certificate. They are persistent, keep their own history, and support owners, moderators, invitations and member lists.
Yes, over the server-to-server port. We issue the certificate across your base domain and every service subdomain, because a certificate that covers only the base domain is the usual reason remote servers refuse to federate with a new install.
You need service records pointing clients and remote servers at the right host, plus records for the conference and upload subdomains. We give you the exact set for your domain and check them from our side before the server goes live.
Not unless you turn that on. We ship with open registration off and accounts created by you, because a public XMPP domain with open registration attracts spam accounts within days of appearing in server directories.

02

Migration and onboarding

21 datacenter locations across six continents. You choose the region at provisioning. Application data sits in the region you choose; pick whichever is closest to your users or matches your data-residency preference.
Yes. Request a region migration from the dashboard and we run the move in the background. The system emails you when the migration completes; total transfer time depends on data volume but typical instances finish in a few hours. There is no extra charge for a region change.
Yes. Full data export is available at any time, in a portable format you can bring to any infrastructure.

03

Billing, support, and platform

€9 covers everything we do for that app: hardware in the region you choose, daily off-site backups with one-click restore, automatic security patches and version upgrades, 24/7 monitoring, SSL and firewall, and engineering support on email and the ticket section in the client portal. There are no setup fees or hidden line items. For more info see our Pricing page.
If you decide to continue, we charge €9/app/month from day 8. If you don't, the trial ends and you can export your data. No card is required for the trial, and we never auto-charge you without explicit consent.
No. The €9/month is flat regardless of how many users log into your app. Add 5 users or 50; the price doesn't change.
24/7 email and ticket support, both staffed by engineers who run the systems. We handle DNS configuration, SMTP setup, app integrations, performance tuning, troubleshooting, and migration help. Response time is typically under an hour. There is no tier system — every customer gets the same support.
Yes. Cancel from the dashboard. We don't charge a cancellation fee, we don't lock data, and we will export your data to you on request before deletion. data to you on request before deletion.
Every customer instance is backed up daily to a separate region from the primary. We test restores. You can request a restore at any backup point within the retention window — usually 7 days for daily backups.
Your application data sits in the region you choose at provisioning — 21 datacenter locations across six continents. Account-level data (billing, account email, support ticket history) is processed centrally. Application data region is picked by you, per app.
