ABOUT THE SOFTWARE

What is PeerTube

PeerTube is an open-source video platform that federates over ActivityPub. Instead of one company hosting every video, thousands of independent servers exchange metadata and embeds, and viewers reach content across the network from any participating site.

PeerTube ships under the AGPL-3.0 licence and is maintained by Framasoft, a French nonprofit that has stewarded the project since 2017.

The federated network spans more than a thousand public platforms today. Notable instances include TILvids (curated edutainment), tube.numerique.gouv.fr (operated by DINUM, the French interministerial digital directorate), peertube.s2s.video (dedicated to sign-language content, presented at FOSDEM 2024), and Framasoft's own FramaTube. The stack is Node.js, PostgreSQL, Redis, ffmpeg, and ActivityPub, with optional remote runners for off-loaded transcoding and Whisper-based transcription.

FEATURES

What PeerTube does

The feature set covers what a video team actually ships: publish, transcode, stream, embed, federate, and moderate. Eight capabilities below; many more in the admin panel and through the plugin system.

Federated publishing

Videos federate over ActivityPub to followers across the network. Files stay on your instance; metadata and player embeds travel. Per-video visibility from public to instance-only.

Live streaming with RTMP ingest

OBS, Jitsi, or any RTMP source streams into PeerTube live. Scheduled streams, replays saved automatically.

Automatic transcription

Whisper-based transcription produces editable captions in dozens of languages.

Plugins and themes

Custom transcoding profiles, chat for live streams, LTI for course embedding. Installable from the admin UI; we test against staging.

HLS adaptive streaming

Each video is transcoded into multiple resolutions (240p–1080p by default) and served as HLS segments. Optional WebRTC peer-assist amortises bandwidth on popular content.

Team channel management

The v8 editor role lets multiple accounts co-manage a channel — upload, edit, manage playlists and comments, run synchronizations. Channel owners keep deletion rights.

Studio in-browser editor

Trim, cut, add intros and outros from the browser without re-uploading.

Mobile apps with creator mode

Official Framasoft mobile apps on F-Droid, Google Play, and the Apple App Store. Creator mode shipped in December 2025 — upload from gallery or record in-app.

WHAT'S ALWAYS INCLUDED

Every app. Fully managed.
Nothing extra to pay for.

Every app you deploy includes the full managed service — security, backups, updates, and support from day one.

Automatic updates and patches

Apps run the latest stable version. Security patches applied silently, with rollback if needed.

Daily off-site backups

Multiple daily backups in redundant off-site locations. One-click restore if anything goes wrong.

24/7 uptime monitoring

Continuous monitoring with instant alerting. We respond before you notice.

SSL, firewall, DDoS protection

Auto-renewing SSL, hardened firewall rules, DDoS mitigation on every deployment.

Performance and scaling

We monitor resource usage continuously. When your app needs more headroom, we flag it and upgrade with your explicit approval.

Dedicated engineering support

Real engineers on chat. DNS, SMTP & migration help. All included in €9.

WHY MANAGED

Why teams pick managed PeerTube

Vimeo's late-2025 acquisition by Bending Spoons triggered a forced re-tier in 2026. Legacy Plus users were auto-renewed onto the new Professional plan at $70/month — a 367% increase — and lost private video links and password protection unless they upgraded. That's what's bringing video teams to PeerTube this year.

Running PeerTube yourself in production isn't a weekend exercise. Transcoding ladders need tuning to match your audience devices. Federation needs an allowlist policy decision before the first follower request arrives, not after.

USE CASES

Three teams who run PeerTube on DANIAN

The shape of a PeerTube deployment varies by team. The three patterns below cover most of what we see: an editorial collective that owns its distribution, a public-sector portal with a sovereignty mandate, and a conference team handling a 48-hour burst of recordings.

6-PERSON EDUTAINMENT COLLECTIVE

Replacing a YouTube channel after the January 2026 enforcement wave

Six contributors, ~200 hours of educational video, federation enabled to reach Mastodon followers. Sensitive-content tagging redesigned in v7.2; Podcast 2.0 export so talks also surface in podcast clients. Channel sync mirrors the old YouTube catalogue for the migration.

200-USER PUBLIC-SECTOR VIDEO PORTAL

Sovereign archive built to replace a foreign-vendor streaming product

Operated by a ministry communications team. Storage region pinned to France. Federation set to an allowlist of peer government instances. Sepia Search inclusion off, recorded sessions cross-posted to the internal Matrix-based messaging channel. Visio handles live production; PeerTube archives.

28-TRACK HACKER-CONFERENCE VIDEO TEAM

Ingesting 750+ talks across one weekend on volunteer hardware

Volunteer recording team operating ~60 capture boxes across parallel tracks. Bulk import via peertube-cli post-event. Auto-transcription generates captions stored in the captions/ prefix. Archive retained indefinitely.

COMPARISON

Four ways to run PeerTube

Each path costs a different mix of money, time, and risk. The honest tally lands DANIAN at the floor for one user, five users, and ten users — and the math holds further out, because the price doesn't scale with seat count.

Vimeo prices verified May 2026; legacy Plus subscribers were auto-renewed onto the new Professional plan at $70/month in the 2026 restructure — a 367% increase versus their old billing. The 2 TB/month bandwidth ceiling is shared across every self-serve tier; exceed it twice in a year and Vimeo's account team initiates an Enterprise migration. VPS path math assumes a 2 vCPU / 4 GB production-class machine, object-storage backup, and an external monitoring tier — not a budget-VPS test setup.

BY INDUSTRY

PeerTube for specific industries

PeerTube's federation model and self-hosted control put it in front of buyers in regulated and sovereignty-conscious sectors. The four industry fits below each carry their own configuration choices, workflow patterns, and quantitative pressure that shape how we tune the instance.

Course recordings, conference proceedings, and lecture archives have moved from departmental file servers to managed video — and from there often to YouTube against institutional policy. The accessibility standard universities work to is WCAG 2.1 AA, with captions and transcripts required for any video forming part of teaching. Data-processor agreements (DPAs) with the hosting provider are standard procurement.

A typical workflow: a lecturer publishes a recorded session via channel synchronization from institutional storage, captions generate automatically, and an LTI embed places the player inside the relevant Moodle or Canvas course page. A 30-session lecture series — roughly 25 hours of source video — clears the transcoding queue in well under a day.
2026 has been a tipping year for sovereignty-driven video. France's Minister of Public Service announced on January 26, 2026 that Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Webex, and Google Meet may no longer be used for official French government work; ~2.5M civil servants migrate to the sovereign DINUM-built Visio platform by 2027. A follow-up DINUM directive on April 8, 2026 ordered all ministries to formalise plans by autumn for eliminating foreign-vendor digital dependencies across eight categories — including collaborative and communication tools.

For a public-sector PeerTube instance we use the server region of your choice, set federation to a closed allowlist of peer government instances, and disable Sepia Search inclusion so the instance isn't surfaced publicly. The published savings cited by the French government for the Visio migration alone are roughly €1M per year per 100,000 users — a quantification public buyers reuse in their own procurement business cases.
Editorial collectives, investigative outlets, and reader-supported media run into platform-risk and budget pressure on every commercial video host. Vimeo's 2026 forced re-tier moved legacy Plus users onto the new Professional plan at $70/month — a 367% increase versus their old $15/month Plus billing — and stripped private video links and password protection unless they upgraded. A four-contributor editorial collective hits roughly $3,360/year there to retain prior functionality.

For a media collective we harden private HLS playlists per the CVE-2025-32943 fix so unlisted source material can't be enumerated by guessing URLs. The 2025 word-monitoring moderation tool catches abuse and harassment across federated comments. Storage stays in the region of your choice, with the streaming-playlists fronted by signed URLs so embedded video can't be re-hosted without going through your access control. €108/year on DANIAN replaces the Vimeo line item, and federation amplifies reach without paying for it.
Conference recording is bursty work. FOSDEM 2020 documented 60 video-capture boxes producing 750+ talks across 28 parallel tracks over a 48-hour weekend; the post-event transcoding queue is the operational bottleneck. PeerTube's per-resolution rate limiter starts returning HTTP 429s once a single runner is processing 5–7 simultaneous live resolutions (issue #5834) — a real-world ceiling that needs configuration relief before the event, not after.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Everything teams ask before signing up — answered straight, without sales speak.

Three groups: technical setup, migration, and how DANIAN works as a service.

01

Technical and configuration

Public videos federate over ActivityPub to any instance that follows yours. Videos remain physically stored on the origin instance — federation passes metadata and player embeds, not file copies. You can set visibility to Internal (instance-only) per video, switch on an allowlist of peer instances, or disable federation entirely from the admin federation policy.
Yes. We set the auto-follow-back policy to false, leave the followers and followings allowlists empty, and disable Sepia Search inclusion so the instance isn't surfaced in the federated meta-search. Internal-visibility videos require an authenticated account on your instance to view. This is a common configuration for corporate training portals.
A default ladder of 240/360/480/720/1080p costs roughly 1.5–3× video duration per resolution on one CPU core. On a vanilla install with transcoding on the web server, a busy upload saturates ffmpeg and degrades playback for everyone. We configure it differently so that the web server stays responsive.
WebRTC peer-to-peer playback exchanges connection candidates between viewers, which can include IP addresses. As of v6.0.0 PeerTube removed the legacy WebTorrent path and uses HLS-over-WebRTC only — still toggleable per instance. We disable P2P by default on private and unlisted videos and surface viewer telemetry only behind the v8 player's right-click Stats panel rather than in the main UI.
Essential: the transcoding-custom-quality plugin for a tuned bitrate ladder, a chat plugin if live streaming is on. The v8.x run-actions plugin API and the v7 caption and storyboard path deprecations broke a handful of community plugins on upgrade. We pin tested plugin versions, test against staging before a release, and roll back if something regresses.

02

Migration and onboarding

We can activate your app on your own custom domain/subdomain. Examples: mydomain.com, anyword.mydomain.com.
Or, on our randomized free subdomain. Example: 963.apps.danian.cloud
If you wish to use a custom domain/subdomain, select that option when ordering your app (or notify us later). We will send you the required DNS records and if needed, our tech team will modify them for you.
21 datacenter locations across six continents. You choose the region at provisioning. Application data sits in the region you choose; pick whichever is closest to your users or matches your data-residency preference.
Yes. Request a region migration from the dashboard and we run the move in the background. The system emails you when the migration completes; total transfer time depends on data volume but typical instances finish in a few hours. There is no extra charge for a region change.
Yes. Full data export is available at any time, in a portable format you can bring to any infrastructure.
Channel synchronization imports videos from a YouTube channel URL on a polling interval — default one hour. v8.0 added automatic retry for failed imports. You keep the video files, titles, descriptions, captions where available, and original upload dates. You lose YouTube comments, watch-time analytics history, exact like counts, and any Shorts-specific monetization signals.

03

Billing, support, and platform

€9 covers everything we do for that app: hardware in the region you choose, daily off-site backups with one-click restore, automatic security patches and version upgrades, 24/7 monitoring, SSL and firewall, and engineering support on Email/LiveChat. There are no setup fees or hidden line items. For more info see our Pricing page.
If you decide to continue, we charge €9/app/month from day 8. If you don't, the trial ends and you can export your data. No card is required for the trial, and we never auto-charge you without explicit consent.
No. The €9/month is flat regardless of how many users log into your app. Add 5 users or 50; the price doesn't change.
24/7 Live chat and email support, both staffed by engineers who run the systems. We handle DNS configuration, SMTP setup, app integrations, performance tuning, troubleshooting, and migration help. Response time is typically under an hour. There is no tier system — every customer gets the same support.
