ABOUT THE SOFTWARE

What is Mermaid Live Editor

Mermaid Live Editor is the open-source, browser-based editor for the Mermaid diagram syntax. You write a diagram as text and watch it render live, then export it or share a link. The diagram source is plain text, not a binary file.

The project is published under the permissive MIT license by the Mermaid team, the same maintainers behind the Mermaid diagramming engine the editor bundles. The engine itself is also MIT-licensed and is one of the most widely used diagram-as-code libraries in open source, with more than 90,000 GitHub stars on its repository and a place in the README files of countless projects.

The editor is a self-contained single-page application. It renders diagrams in the browser, has no built-in user accounts, and keeps a rolling history of recent edits in local storage. Each diagram also encodes into a shareable link, so the source travels with the URL rather than living in a separate database. That design is why it deploys as one small container and runs on a modest footprint.

FEATURES

What Mermaid Live Editor does

The editor turns short, readable text into rendered diagrams, live as you type. It covers the common diagram types, exports to SVG and PNG, and shares diagrams as links. These are the editor's own capabilities, separate from the platform features above.

Live split-pane editing

Type diagram code on the left, watch it render on the right in real time. Syntax errors surface inline as you write, not after a save.

Diagram-as-code syntax

Diagrams are written in a short, Markdown-style text syntax. The source is plain text you can keep in Git, review in a pull request, and diff line by line.

Wide diagram-type support

Flowcharts, sequence, class, state, entity-relationship, Gantt, pie, gitgraph, mindmap, timeline, C4, and more, all from the same editor and the same syntax.

SVG and PNG export

Export any diagram to SVG or PNG for docs, slides, or tickets. On a managed instance the export step renders against your own server, not a third party.

Shareable links

Each diagram encodes into a link that reopens the exact source. Send a view or edit link to a teammate; nothing is stored in a separate account system.

Theme and config panel

Switch light and dark themes, adjust layout, and set diagram config from a side panel. A sketch-style render mode is available for rougher, hand-drawn looks.

Local autosave history

The editor keeps a rolling history of your recent edits in the browser, so an accidental change is one step back, not a lost afternoon.

Pan, zoom, and large canvases

Pan and zoom across big diagrams without the layout collapsing. Architecture and sequence diagrams stay legible as they grow.

WHAT'S ALWAYS INCLUDED

Every app. Fully managed.
Nothing extra to pay for.

Every app on DANIAN ships with the same operational baseline. You do not choose a backup add-on or a monitoring tier. Hosting, patching, backups, SSL, and support are part of the €9, and they apply to Mermaid Live Editor the same way they apply to everything else in the catalog.

WHY MANAGED

Why teams pick managed Mermaid Live Editor

Per-editor diagramming subscriptions add up fast. The hosted version of this same editor runs $10 per editor each month, and broader per-seat diagramming tools sit between $9 and $20. Cross five editors and the per-seat math turns against you.

Running the editor yourself is more than starting a container. The published image is built with its settings baked in, and you cannot change them at runtime. To remove the upstream promo links, point the export step at your own server, or set your own domain, you rebuild the container from source with a Node.js and pnpm toolchain. The bundled diagram engine is pinned at build time too, so new diagram types only appear when you rebuild.

There is a quieter catch in that build step. By default the editor's PNG and SVG export sends your diagram code to an external rendering service. For an internal architecture or data-flow diagram, that is the moment your diagram source leaves your control, and the only way to stop it is the same from-source rebuild.

USE CASES

Three teams who run it on DANIAN

Diagram-as-code suits teams that want diagrams reviewed, versioned, and kept on infrastructure they control. These three are representative of who moves a Mermaid editor to a managed instance and why.

6-PERSON SOFTWARE TEAM

Architecture diagrams that live in the repo, not a SaaS seat

A small product team dropped a per-editor diagramming subscription and put a managed instance in the region nearest their developers. Sequence and entity-relationship diagrams now live as text in the same Git repository as the code, reviewed in pull requests. Export renders against their own instance, so system diagrams never leave the server they pay for.

TECHNICAL DOCS TEAM

One diagram source format across every documentation page

A documentation team runs the editor on a subdomain of their docs site. Writers author diagrams as text and paste the same source into the static-site build, so there are no binary image assets to chase or re-export. When a diagram changes, the change shows up in the page diff like any other line of content.

DIGITAL AGENCY

Unbranded client diagrams, handed over as portable text

An agency uses a private instance with the upstream promo links stripped and its own domain in front. Architecture and process diagrams go to clients as deliverables, and the client keeps the plain-text source. No proprietary file, no tool lock-in, and nothing pointing back at a vendor the agency would rather not advertise.

COMPARISON

Four ways to run Mermaid Live Editor

The same editor is free and open-source, so the real question is who runs it. A per-editor hosted product scales with your headcount. The self-hosted paths are flat per instance but cost you setup, patching, and rebuilds. Here is the math.

The per-editor line is the only one that climbs with headcount. The self-hosted paths cost the same whether one person draws or twenty, because a single instance serves them all. What they ask for instead is your time: setup, patching, and a from-source rebuild to change a setting. Our row trades that time for a flat €9, and it stays €9 as the team grows.

How you run it1 editor5 editors10 editorsYour time / monthNotes
Mermaid Chart (hosted)$10/mo$50/mo$100/mo0 hrsThe same editor as a paid product, priced per editor. Your diagram source sits on their service. The Plus tier is $10 per editor per month, billed annually.
Self-host on a VPS~$44/mo~$44/mo~$44/mo1–2 hrs + rebuildsA $24/month production-class VPS plus backup and monitoring. One instance serves your whole team, but you patch it, and you rebuild the container from source to change any setting.
Home server€35–100/mo€35–100/mo€35–100/mo2–4 hrsA business-grade box such as a Synology DS923+ (~€650) amortised, plus electricity, a static-IP business line, and an off-site backup target. You are on call.
DANIAN managed Mermaid Live Editor€9/mo€9/mo€9/mo0 hrsOne flat price for the instance, whatever the editor count. We patch, back up, monitor, and keep the diagram engine current. You write diagrams; we run the box.

Hosted-product pricing reflects the Plus tier at $10 per editor per month, billed annually; verify current pricing before you decide. VPS and home-server figures cover one shared instance. A production-class VPS is taken at ~$24/month before backup and monitoring.

BY INDUSTRY

Mermaid Live Editor for specific industries

Diagram-as-code lands differently across fields. Some want diagrams in pull requests, some in a docs build, some on a network that makes no outside calls. Open a section for how we set the editor up for each.

Engineering teams document systems with the C4 model and keep those diagrams next to the code. On a managed instance, the editor renders and exports against your own server, so an architecture or sequence diagram that maps internal services never travels to a third-party renderer. Diagrams are written as text, committed to the repository, and reviewed in pull requests like any other change. There are no binary diagram files to fall out of date, because the source and the rendered output come from the same lines. A team of any size shares one instance for a flat price, so the cost does not climb as more engineers start drawing. We keep the bundled diagram engine current, which is what brings new diagram types to your editor.

Documentation teams that work docs-as-code want diagrams to behave like the rest of the docs: versioned, diffable, and built from text. The editor produces diagram source that drops straight into a static-site pipeline, so a flowchart or state diagram is rendered at build time rather than pasted in as a flat image. Following a structure such as Diátaxis, a writer can keep a tutorial's flow diagram beside its prose and update both in one commit. We serve the editor on a subdomain of your documentation domain so the toolchain stays on one host. One source format covers every page, which removes the export-and-re-import step that quietly rots screenshots. Reviewers see diagram changes in the page diff, not as an opaque attachment.

Agencies and consultancies ship architecture and process diagrams as client deliverables, and they want them clean and portable. We strip the upstream promo and sign-up links and put your own domain in front, so the editor a client sees is yours, not a vendor's. Diagrams hand over as plain-text source the client can keep and re-render anywhere, which means no proprietary file and no tool lock-in to explain in a handover. A single instance covers an unlimited number of people drawing across client projects at a flat price, so a busy month does not turn into a per-seat invoice. When you revise a diagram for a client, the change is a line edit in version control, not a re-drawn canvas.

Instructors and training teams build flowcharts, Gantt charts, and mindmaps for course material, often for a whole cohort at once. A shared instance with no per-student accounts lets a class open the editor and start drawing without a sign-up step, and a flat price means a cohort does not become a seat count. Diagrams export to SVG, which keeps the text inside the image readable by assistive technology rather than baking it into pixels. We can keep the instance reachable only inside your network for a course run on managed devices. Because diagrams are text, a teacher can hand out the source for a diagram and have students extend it, which turns a static figure into an exercise.

Some teams cannot let internal system diagrams touch an outside service at all. The stock editor sends diagram code to an external renderer when you export to PNG or SVG; on a managed instance we point that renderer back at your own server, so the export step makes no third-party call. For teams that need it, the instance can run network-isolated, reachable only from inside your own network. Internal data-flow and infrastructure diagrams then stay on infrastructure you control, in the region you choose. Diagrams remain plain text you can move or archive without a proprietary viewer. We will tell you plainly which parts of an air-gapped setup we can operate and which need a human on each change, rather than implying every switch is one click.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Three groups of questions: how the editor and your diagram data behave, how moving to a managed instance works, and how billing, support, and the platform run.

01

Technical and configuration

No. The editor renders diagrams in your browser, so the source you type while editing is not sent anywhere during normal editing. On a managed instance the page and its assets are served only from the instance you control.
On the stock editor, export sends your diagram code to an external rendering service. We point that renderer back at your own instance, so the export step renders locally and makes no third-party call. Your diagram source stays on the server you pay for.
Flowchart, sequence, class, state, entity-relationship, Gantt, pie, quadrant, requirement, gitgraph, C4, mindmap, timeline, sankey, and several newer types. The exact set depends on the bundled engine version, which we keep current so new diagram types reach your editor.
We track the upstream releases and rebuild your instance when a new engine version lands. The stock published image bundles a fixed engine version, so without us you would rebuild the container from source each time you wanted the newest one.
Yes. Export to SVG or PNG and drop the file into docs, slides, or a ticket, or keep the text source and render it wherever your toolchain already renders this diagram syntax. The source is plain text, so it travels.

02

Migration and onboarding

21 datacenter locations across six continents. You choose the region at provisioning. Application data sits in the region you choose; pick whichever is closest to your users or matches your data-residency preference.
Yes. Request a region migration from the dashboard and we run the move in the background. The system emails you when the migration completes; total transfer time depends on data volume but typical instances finish in a few hours. There is no extra charge for a region change.
Yes. Full data export is available at any time, in a portable format you can bring to any infrastructure.
If your team already writes this diagram syntax, moving is mostly copy-and-paste, because the source is identical across tools. The work is pointing your domain at the new instance and deciding who reaches it.
Yes. Paste the diagram source into the editor and it renders as-is. There is no import format to wrangle, because a Mermaid diagram is just its text. Diagrams kept in Git or in Markdown files come over unchanged.
Those tools store diagrams in proprietary formats, so there is no clean one-click path out. You recreate each diagram as text once. After that it is portable forever and never trapped in a single tool again.
Yes. Tell us the subdomain you want and we walk you through the one DNS record, or check it for you. Custom domains are included; there is no add-on charge for putting the editor on your own address.
You already hold them. Diagrams are plain text, so there is nothing to export from a proprietary store. Keep the source files, and any rendered SVG or PNG you exported, and you are done. The app is open-source; we only operate it.

03

Billing, support, and platform

€9 covers everything we do for that app: hardware in the region you choose, daily off-site backups with one-click restore, automatic security patches and version upgrades, 24/7 monitoring, SSL and firewall, and engineering support on email and the ticket section in the client portal. There are no setup fees or hidden line items. For more info see our Pricing page.
If you decide to continue, we charge €9/app/month from day 8. If you don't, the trial ends and you can export your data. No card is required for the trial, and we never auto-charge you without explicit consent.
No. The €9/month is flat regardless of how many users log into your app. Add 5 users or 50; the price doesn't change.
24/7 email and ticket support, both staffed by engineers who run the systems. We handle DNS configuration, SMTP setup, app integrations, performance tuning, troubleshooting, and migration help. Response time is typically under an hour. There is no tier system — every customer gets the same support.
Yes. Cancel from the dashboard. We don't charge a cancellation fee, we don't lock data, and we will export your data to you on request before deletion. data to you on request before deletion.
Every customer instance is backed up daily to a separate region from the primary. We test restores. You can request a restore at any backup point within the retention window — usually 7 days for daily backups.
