ABOUT THE SOFTWARE

What is Meemo

Meemo is an open-source personal-notes stream built around markdown and hashtags. It treats your notebook like a personal timeline — no folders, no nested pages, no database schemas — and runs entirely on infrastructure you control.

Meemo is MIT-licensed and was created by Johannes Zellner, originally under the name Guacamoly. It has been actively developed in some form since 2015 and is packaged as a first-class app on the Cloudron platform.

Honest framing: Meemo is now in light maintenance, not active feature development. The original GitHub repository at cloudron-io/meemo was archived the same day v1.18.0 shipped, and the canonical codebase moved to git.cloudron.io/packages/meemo-app. We host Meemo because it is a small, well-shaped codebase that does one thing well — a private hashtag-driven feed of markdown notes — and because its low surface area is a feature for buyers who want a vault that will still work the same way in 2030. If you want an actively developed alternative in the same shape, ask us about Memos, also €9 per month.

FEATURES

What Meemo does

Meemo runs a private personal-notes stream with markdown, hashtags, full-text search, attachments, and a browser-clipper. Eight features that matter for day-to-day use.

Markdown notes

Every note is plain markdown. The syntax you already know, the format your text leaves in if you ever leave the platform. No proprietary wrapping.

Full-text search

Find anything by content, even when you forgot to tag it. Sub-second across ~50,000-note vaults on the default tier.

Attachments

Drop images, files, and PDFs onto a note. Stored on disk in the instance's attachments directory — not on a third-party CDN.

OpenID Connect single sign-on

Wire Authentik, Authelia, Keycloak, Google, or GitHub. OIDC replaced LDAP in v1.18.0; we set the environment variables for your provider.

Hashtag organisation

Tag notes with #concepts the way you'd tag a tweet. Filter by tag, follow a tag, never invent another folder hierarchy.

Sharing and public feeds

Share individual notes for view or edit, or publish a public feed others can follow. Useful for working notes shared with a collaborator or client.

Browser web-clipper

Chrome and Firefox extensions for sending pages and selections straight into Meemo. Useful as a bookmark manager replacement.

Email-to-note via IMAP

Configure a dedicated mailbox and Meemo pulls incoming mail in as notes. Capture from anywhere that can send email.

WHAT'S ALWAYS INCLUDED

Every app. Fully managed.
Nothing extra to pay for.

Every app you deploy includes the full managed service — security, backups, updates, and support from day one.

Automatic updates and patches

Apps run the latest stable version. Security patches applied silently, with rollback if needed.

Daily off-site backups

Multiple daily backups in redundant off-site locations. One-click restore if anything goes wrong.

24/7 uptime monitoring

Continuous monitoring with instant alerting. We respond before you notice.

SSL, firewall, DDoS protection

Auto-renewing SSL, hardened firewall rules, DDoS mitigation on every deployment.

Performance and scaling

We monitor resource usage continuously. When your app needs more headroom, we flag it and upgrade with your explicit approval.

Dedicated engineering support

Real engineers on chat. DNS, SMTP & migration help. All included in €9.

WHY MANAGED

Why teams pick managed Meemo

Evernote retired the Personal and Professional plans in November 2025; long-time users were pushed onto Starter ($14.99/month) or Advanced. Notion's data-handling questions linger for buyers with IP-sensitive notes. Both nudged knowledge workers toward self-hosted markdown — but running Meemo well in production is a different problem from using it well.

Self-hosting Meemo is not just docker run cloudron/meemo-app. A production instance needs HTTPS termination at a reverse proxy with the right headers, a MongoDB that someone provisions and backs up, an OIDC provider wired into the new authentication flow (LDAP was removed in v1.18.0), and the discipline to patch the base image when the next dependency CVE lands. The friction is not the app — Meemo is small. The friction is everything around it.

The most expensive failure mode is the quiet one: a self-hosted Meemo running without off-site MongoDB backups, on a VPS where the disk eventually fills or the database corrupts mid-write. Years of notes vanish — not from malice, but from the boring operational chores no one schedules. We schedule them. Daily mongodump to a separate region, attachment snapshot, integrity check, retention policy, restore drills.

USE CASES

Three teams who run Meemo on DANIAN

These are representative team types we set up most often. Each starts with the same flat €9 plan.

Ex-Evernote user, Nov 2025

Migrating 2,400 notes after the plan retirement email

Berlin-based product manager. Region: Germany for latency and EU jurisdiction. 2,400 notes migrated from a 9-year Evernote vault via .enex → markdown through Joplin, then bulk-import. Custom domain on a personal domain she already owned. OIDC wired to her existing Google Workspace. ~30 new notes per week with a daily browser-clipper habit.

Independent researcher

5-year doctoral vault, 8,000 notes

Amsterdam-based historian, end-of-PhD writing year. Region: Netherlands. ~8,000 notes accumulated over five years, half captured by IMAP-to-note from paper-of-the-day RSS-to-email pipeline. Hashtag conventions track archives, themes, and chapter targets. Full-text search is the primary access path; folder structure was abandoned in year two. Daily off-site backup verified weekly.

Founder + co-founder

Private second brain, shared notes file

London-based two-person startup. Region: UK. OIDC via Authentik so each founder logs in separately. ~1,200 notes across customer-name, IP-fragment, and strategy hashtags. Sharing feature used for joint working notes; private notes stay private. Browser-clipper for competitor research, IMAP-to-note for inbound investor email tagged as captured.

COMPARISON

Four ways to run Meemo

Four real paths in 2026: the proprietary SaaS most buyers are leaving (Evernote, after the November 2025 plan retirement), a VPS you operate yourself, a home server, or fully managed by us. The math holds at every scale.

Evernote pricing verified May 2026: Starter is $14.99/month monthly or $99/year ($8.25/month effective annual); Personal and Professional plans were retired November 2025 per Evernote's pricing announcement. No household-plan equivalent — multi-user is per-seat. VPS path adds operational time at €60–120/hour for OS patching, MongoDB upgrades, certificate renewal, and backup verification. Home server amortises a €650 NAS-class device over 36 months and adds electricity at €0.30/kWh, a business-grade static-IP line, and an off-site backup target.

BY INDUSTRY

Meemo for specific industries

Meemo fits where a buyer needs minimalism over reporting, privacy over integrations, and a single hashtag-driven stream over hierarchical workspaces. Four segments where the fit is strongest.

Founders accumulate customer names, contract terms, IP fragments, and half-formed strategy in their notebooks — exactly the data US-based note SaaS exposes to CLOUD Act process. The Schrems II ruling (CJEU C-311/18, July 2020) invalidated Privacy Shield specifically because US surveillance law gives third parties access to EU-personal data on US infrastructure.

On managed Meemo, your data lives on EU infrastructure under EU jurisdiction by default, on your own domain, with daily off-site MongoDB snapshots. We sign a DPA on request. A typical founder configuration is 1 to 2 hashtag trees, custom domain, OIDC via Authentik or Keycloak, and one shared notes file with a co-founder. Expect 500 to 5,000 notes accumulated over 1 to 3 years and a daily-capture rhythm via the browser clipper.
Personal-research notes routinely contain non-anonymised informant data, draft analysis, and unpublished hypotheses. GDPR Article 5(1)(c) data minimisation and Article 32 security of processing apply to academic researchers handling personal data, and Horizon Europe's data management plan template explicitly addresses storage location for non-anonymised research data.

On managed Meemo, we configure one MongoDB-backed instance per researcher with full-text search across the vault, IMAP-to-note for inbound paper PDFs, daily encrypted backups, and a region of your choice. Expect 3,000 to 15,000 notes over the lifetime of a multi-year project, with hashtag conventions matching your reading and citation taxonomy.
Source notes, interview transcripts, and draft fragments are exactly the content the Council of Europe Recommendation CM/Rec(2016)4 on the protection of journalism instructs states to insulate from disclosure. Hosting that content on a US-based notebook exposes it to CLOUD Act compulsion against the provider.

On managed Meemo, we host on EU infrastructure under EU jurisdiction, encrypt data at rest at the disk layer, and back up daily. Honest caveat: Meemo does not offer per-note end-to-end encryption — if your threat model requires that the server be unable to read your notes, evaluate Standard Notes or Notesnook, which we also host. Expect 1,000 to 8,000 notes per long-running story portfolio, with browser-clipper extensions for source-page archival and IMAP-to-note for inbound tips.
Commonplace books, Zettelkasten vaults, and Building-a-Second-Brain libraries are designed to outlive any single piece of software. A 10-year personal vault routinely outlasts the pricing model of a SaaS notebook — Evernote alone has gone through six pricing restructures since 2016, including the November 2025 retirement of Personal and Professional plans.

On managed Meemo, your notes are stored as markdown in a MongoDB you can export at any time via SFTP, with a built-in export feature that hands you a markdown archive plus attachments. No proprietary file format wraps your text. Expect 2,000 to 20,000 notes over a 5-to-10-year vault with hashtag conventions you set once and use for the duration.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Everything teams ask before signing up — answered straight, without sales speak.

Three groups: technical setup, migration, and how DANIAN works as a service.

01

Technical and configuration

Meemo is MongoDB-native — the data model uses Mongo's document storage for notes, attachments metadata, and tag indexes. There is no upstream Postgres adapter. On DANIAN, we provision and version MongoDB alongside the Meemo container, take daily encrypted dumps, and you never configure the connection string or run mongod yourself.
Yes. Meemo v1.18.0 added OpenID Connect as the supported authentication method. We wire MEEMO_OIDC_PROVIDER_URL, client ID, and client secret to your provider; you manage users from there. OIDC replaced LDAP support, which was removed in v1.18.0.
Meemo v1.18.0 (31 March 2025) removed LDAP and the legacy local users.json admin path in favour of OpenID Connect. If you are migrating from an older self-hosted Meemo that still uses users.json, we map existing users to OIDC identities at migration time.
Meemo has no documented hard cap. In practice, we run instances with up to roughly 30,000 notes and a few gigabytes of attachments without observable slowdown on the default tier. Full-text search latency stays sub-second through ~50,000 notes. For larger vaults, message support and we will upgrade your instance to a higher-resource tier.
No native mobile apps. The Meemo web client is responsive and works as a Progressive Web App — installable from Safari or Chrome on iOS and Android, with offline caching of recent notes. The browser-clipper extension is available for Chrome and Firefox on desktop.
Meemo has an internal HTTP API used by its web client. It is not formally documented as a public API, but it works for read and write operations. We can wire a long-lived API token into your instance for automation use cases on request.

02

Migration and onboarding

We can activate your app on your own custom domain/subdomain. Examples: mydomain.com, anyword.mydomain.com.
Or, on our randomized free subdomain. Example: 963.apps.danian.cloud
If you wish to use a custom domain/subdomain, select that option when ordering your app (or notify us later). We will send you the required DNS records and if needed, our tech team will modify them for you.
21 datacenter locations across six continents. You choose the region at provisioning. Application data sits in the region you choose; pick whichever is closest to your users or matches your data-residency preference.
Yes. Request a region migration from the dashboard and we run the move in the background. The system emails you when the migration completes; total transfer time depends on data volume but typical instances finish in a few hours. There is no extra charge for a region change.
Yes. Full data export is available at any time, in a portable format you can bring to any infrastructure.
Evernote retired Personal and Professional plans in November 2025; new sign-ups land on Starter ($14.99/month or $99/year) or Advanced. Meemo does not import .enex files directly. The standard path is .enex → markdown via Joplin or evernote2md (both open source) and then bulk-import to Meemo.
Notion exports to markdown via Settings → Export. Meemo accepts markdown imports. Honest caveat: Notion's database tables and nested pages translate awkwardly to Meemo's flat hashtag-based feed — a 1:1 migration usually is not what you want. We can help you decide whether Meemo, a Trilium wiki, or a flat-file Joplin notebook better matches the way you actually use your Notion workspace.

03

Billing, support, and platform

€9 covers everything we do for that app: hardware in the region you choose, daily off-site backups with one-click restore, automatic security patches and version upgrades, 24/7 monitoring, SSL and firewall, and engineering support on Email/LiveChat. There are no setup fees or hidden line items. For more info see our Pricing page.
If you decide to continue, we charge €9/app/month from day 8. If you don't, the trial ends and you can export your data. No card is required for the trial, and we never auto-charge you without explicit consent.
No. The €9/month is flat regardless of how many users log into your app. Add 5 users or 50; the price doesn't change.
24/7 Live chat and email support, both staffed by engineers who run the systems. We handle DNS configuration, SMTP setup, app integrations, performance tuning, troubleshooting, and migration help. Response time is typically under an hour. There is no tier system — every customer gets the same support.
Yes. Cancel from the dashboard. We don't charge a cancellation fee, we don't lock data, and we will export your data to you on request before deletion. data to you on request before deletion.
Every customer instance is backed up daily to a separate region from the primary. We test restores. You can request a restore at any backup point within the retention window — usually 7 days for daily backups.
Your application data sits in the region you choose at provisioning — 21 datacenter locations across six continents. Account-level data (billing, account email, support ticket history) is processed centrally. Application data region is picked by you, per app.
