ABOUT THE SOFTWARE

What is Mattermost Enterprise

Mattermost Enterprise is the commercial self-hosted build distributed by Mattermost, Inc. — same Linux binary as the open-source project, compiled with the license-key mechanism that activates Professional, Enterprise, and Enterprise Advanced features.

Mattermost, Inc. is a venture-backed software company headquartered in Palo Alto, California, founded in 2016 by Ian Tien and Corey Hulen with roughly $70M raised across Y Combinator, Battery Ventures, Redpoint Ventures, S28 Capital, and YC Continuity. The binary requires PostgreSQL (MySQL was deprecated in v11). Windows server builds have been discontinued.

The Enterprise binary boots in free Entry mode out of the box — with all Enterprise Advanced features available but a 10,000-message viewing cap across the workspace. Uploading a paid license at System Console → About → Edition and License activates the matching tier and removes the cap. The platform scales to 50,000 concurrent users on Enterprise and 200,000 on Enterprise Advanced. Customers include the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Air Force, NASA, the European Parliament, Nasdaq, Samsung, and SAP — roughly 900 enterprise organizations and 800,000 workspaces across 4,000+ open-source contributors.

WHY MANAGED

Why teams pick managed Mattermost Enterprise

Slack raised Enterprise+ list pricing to $45 per user per month in June 2025, with median negotiated rates landing near $26 per Vendr's 535-purchase dataset. At 500 seats that's a $130,000–$270,000 annual line item before any feature competes on merit — and Slack Enterprise Grid is famously difficult to leave once a workspace is consolidated under it.

Running Mattermost Enterprise yourself looks straightforward in the deployment guide and turns out to be a small platform-engineering project at scale. The HA cluster needs at least two app nodes behind a load balancer, shared object storage, a PostgreSQL master plus read replicas, and an external Redis cache once node count or invalidation rate makes the default in-memory bus the bottleneck. Elasticsearch or OpenSearch needs standing up before the three-million-post mark — Bleve embedded search was removed in v11.0, so there's no fallback. Mattermost Calls in production needs the rtcd dedicated WebRTC service, since NGINX cannot proxy UDP and the integrated single-server mode does not survive multi-node deployments. SAML and AD/LDAP need certificate rotation and group-attribute mapping that drift with the identity provider. Compliance Export needs its output directory on shared storage or reports only exist on the local node.

The sharpest edge is push notifications. Mattermost's Hosted Push Notification Service is the production-grade path for the stock iOS and Android apps — gated to an active Enterprise or Professional license. The free Test Push Notification Service is explicitly not-for-production by Mattermost itself. The third option, self-hosting the MPNS push proxy, means building and signing your own mobile apps with Apple and Google push certificates. Most self-hosters discover this after they have already invited a team that expects mobile notifications to work.

BY INDUSTRY

Mattermost Enterprise for specific industries

Mattermost Enterprise shows up in places Slack does not fit — usually because the data needs to stay on infrastructure the team controls, the network is restricted, or the retention horizon is measured in years rather than months. Five shapes that recur in our intake conversations.

Broker-dealers operating under SEC Rule 17a-4(b)(4) and FINRA Rule 4511 need written business communications preserved in non-rewriteable form for at least three years, typically seven.

Managed Mattermost Enterprise on DANIAN runs daily Compliance Export to Global Relay EML or Actiance XML, dropped into an object-locked S3 prefix the firm controls.

Legal Hold attaches to departing employees and active investigation subjects through the dedicated plugin.

Custom retention policies pin trading-desk channels to seven years while casual channels rotate at ninety days.

ID-only push notifications keep message contents out of Apple Push Notification Service and Firebase Cloud Messaging payloads.

The standard pattern: one channel per trading desk, separate channels for risk and operations, Mattermost's published FINRA documentation mapping platform features to FINRA 4511, and eDiscovery surfaced through POST /api/v4/compliance/reports for the bank's existing surveillance vendor to ingest.
Defense industrial base suppliers working under CMMC 2.0 Level 2 and NIST SP 800-171 deploy Enterprise Advanced for air-gap compatibility, channel banners, attribute-based access control, and data-spillage handling.

The STIG-hardened FIPS 140-3 image runs inside the contractor's controlled enclave on customer-elected infrastructure.

SAML routes through on-premises Keycloak or AD FS.

Channel banners label CUI//SP-PROP, ITAR-controlled, and FCI channels distinctly.

Dynamic ABAC enforces clearance plus program plus device posture before a user can read a channel.

Mobile biometrics, data-at-rest encryption, jailbreak detection, and screenshot prevention through Intune MAM protect issued iOS devices.

Mattermost publishes a CMMC Compliance guide mapping features to Level 2 controls — AU 3.3.3 audit record retention, IR 3.6.2 incident tracking, AC role-based access through AD/LDAP group sync — and ships an FIPS-validated container image used by 900+ enterprise customers including the U.S. Department of Defense and U.S. Air Force.
Utilities under NERC CIP and EU operators under NIS2 need a communications channel reachable when the public SaaS estate is not, and segregated from the production network being defended.

Managed Mattermost Enterprise on DANIAN runs as an out-of-band control plane on infrastructure separated from the operator's production stack — a second control surface for incident response rather than a piece of the system being responded to.

Pre-staged incident channels carry attached runbooks.

Playbooks template the on-call response: identify, contain, eradicate, recover.

Shared Channels federate with vendor CERTs and contractor SOCs without exposing internal channels. AI-summarized call recordings pin the incident timeline for regulator submissions.

The standard pattern: a #soc-bridge working channel, separate region-keyed pager channels, a read-only mirror of the public status feed, and quarterly tabletop exercises restoring from yesterday's backup.

A 1,000-professional CERT community already uses Mattermost as central collaboration hub across hundreds of infrastructure operators.
Engineering teams producing software for regulated customers need supply-chain transparency and a record of release decisions that outlives a SaaS retention window.

Managed Mattermost Enterprise on DANIAN ships with SBOM publication enabled and Cosign-signed artifact verification matching Mattermost's own release process (DCT was replaced with Cosign in v10.2, November 2024).

GitLab and GitHub webhooks post merge events into dedicated #deploys channels, with Playbooks templating release management gates.

The MCP Universal Connector wires in-Mattermost AI agents to Jira, GitHub, Datadog, and PagerDuty — taking real actions through approval gates rather than read-only summarization.

ESR-track upgrades land monthly minors and six-month majors with a 60-day overlap window, so security patches arrive without forcing a feature-track jump.

A 500-engineer org tracks roughly 8 million posts after one year of activity — within Elasticsearch territory, which we provision pre-indexed at version-pinned 8.x.
Consultancies need conversation segregation between clients and contractual data-residency commitments that match the client's regulatory regime.

On managed Mattermost Enterprise, each client lives in its own Team — channels, files, and integrations scoped to that Team — with membership controlled through AD/LDAP group sync.

Shared Channels federate per-client servers when an engagement spans organizations.

Guest Accounts admit external collaborators as single-channel guests within the documented Mattermost license terms.

Region-pinned deployments place the chat layer near the largest contributor cohort or in the region the client's contract requires.

A 12-person consultancy can manage dozens of client Teams comfortably inside the Enterprise tier's 50,000-concurrent-user ceiling.

The standard pattern: one Team per client, one #project and one #ops channel per Team, a private #partners-internal Team that no client account ever joins, and AI summarization compiling weekly status reports for delivery managers.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Everything teams ask before signing up — answered straight, without sales speak.

Three groups: technical setup, migration, and how DANIAN works as a service.

01

Technical and configuration

Yes. DANIAN ships the Mattermost Enterprise binary in free Entry mode. To activate Professional, Enterprise, or Enterprise Advanced features, you purchase a license from Mattermost, Inc. or an authorized reseller (Carahsoft for U.S. federal) and upload it at System Console → About → Edition and License → Upload License File. Zero-downtime license swap is available via the mmctl license upload CLI. DANIAN does not resell licenses — you own the customer relationship with Mattermost.
The server reverts to Entry mode. All data is preserved — channels, messages, files, accounts, integrations. Paid features (Compliance Export, Legal Hold, SAML, AD/LDAP group sync, advanced permissions, AI features) lock immediately. Entry mode's 10,000-message viewing cap then applies — older messages remain in PostgreSQL but aren't visible or searchable. Renewing and re-uploading a current license restores everything within seconds. We watch the expiration date and ping you well before it lands.
Yes, on Enterprise. Compliance Export emits Actiance XML, Global Relay EML, or generic CSV on a daily schedule, dropped into a per-tenant object-locked S3 prefix. Legal Hold ships as a separate plugin (download the binary, upload via System Console) that preserves messages from named users or groups for a defined window. eDiscovery runs via POST /api/v4/compliance/reports with Unix epoch timestamps and downloads as a zip containing meta.json and posts.csv. The ComplianceSettings.Directory sits on shared storage so reports survive node failure.
Yes, with an active Enterprise or Professional license. Mattermost's Hosted Push Notification Service is the production-grade path for the stock iOS and Android apps from the App Store and Play Store. We toggle it on at System Console → Environment → Push Notification Server, with the option visible only when a paid license is loaded. If you build your own mobile apps, you self-host the MPNS push proxy instead. If your license lapses, HPNS access stops and we route you to the free TPNS (dev-only, no SLA) or a self-hosted MPNS we can stand up alongside.
On Professional and above: SAML 2.0 against Okta, Entra ID, AD FS, Auth0, OneLogin, PingIdentity, and Keycloak; OpenID Connect against Google, Microsoft 365, GitLab, and generic OIDC providers; OAuth 2.0 for GitLab; AD/LDAP user sync. On Enterprise: AD/LDAP group, channel, and team sync, enforced MFA, and RBAC with custom admin roles. From v11.6 the OIDC preferred_username field maps to the Mattermost username for GitLab, OpenID, and Entra ID compatibility.

02

Migration and onboarding

We can activate your app on your own custom domain/subdomain. Examples: mydomain.com, anyword.mydomain.com.
Or, on our randomized free subdomain. Example: 963.apps.danian.cloud
If you wish to use a custom domain/subdomain, select that option when ordering your app (or notify us later). We will send you the required DNS records and if needed, our tech team will modify them for you.
21 datacenter locations across six continents. You choose the region at provisioning. Application data sits in the region you choose; pick whichever is closest to your users or matches your data-residency preference.
Yes. Request a region migration from the dashboard and we run the move in the background. The system emails you when the migration completes; total transfer time depends on data volume but typical instances finish in a few hours. There is no extra charge for a region change.
Yes. Full data export is available at any time, in a portable format you can bring to any infrastructure.
Through mmetl (Slack export-to-Mattermost converter) plus mmctl (admin CLI). The legacy web-app Slack import is deprecated. Full direct-message and private-channel data requires Slack's Corporate Export approval — which Salesforce grants on application from the workspace primary owner. We provide the migration runbook and stage the import into a fresh team to validate fidelity before cut-over. Plan two to four weeks for a multi-year Grid workspace with custom integrations and bots that need rebuilding.
Messages, files, channels, users, and most threaded conversations carry over. Slack apps, bots, slash commands, workflow builder, and starred conversations don't — those rebuild using Mattermost's webhook, slash-command, and bot APIs. User groups become Mattermost Custom Groups. Custom emoji authorship and some bot metadata don't always survive round-trip. Plan two to five days of integration work after the data import lands.
Yes. The mmctl license upload command swaps the license on a running server without restart. The web upload at System Console → About → Edition and License → Upload License File also works without downtime. Features activate within seconds.

03

Billing, support, and platform

€9 covers everything we do for that app: hardware in the region you choose, daily off-site backups with one-click restore, automatic security patches and version upgrades, 24/7 monitoring, SSL and firewall, and engineering support on Email/LiveChat. There are no setup fees or hidden line items. For more info see our Pricing page.
If you decide to continue, we charge €9/app/month from day 8. If you don't, the trial ends and you can export your data. No card is required for the trial, and we never auto-charge you without explicit consent.
No. The €9/month is flat regardless of how many users log into your app. Add 5 users or 50; the price doesn't change.
24/7 Live chat and email support, both staffed by engineers who run the systems. We handle DNS configuration, SMTP setup, app integrations, performance tuning, troubleshooting, and migration help. Response time is typically under an hour. There is no tier system — every customer gets the same support.
Yes. Cancel from the dashboard. We don't charge a cancellation fee, we don't lock data, and we will export your data to you on request before deletion. data to you on request before deletion.
Every customer instance is backed up daily to a separate region from the primary. We test restores. You can request a restore at any backup point within the retention window — usually 7 days for daily backups.
Your application data sits in the region you choose at provisioning — 21 datacenter locations across six continents. Account-level data (billing, account email, support ticket history) is processed centrally. Application data region is picked by you, per app.

We wait. We don't suspend the app or delete your data on the first failed charge. We email you, you fix the card on file, and we continue.
Invoices can be downloaded from the billing dashboard in PDF the day each charge succeeds. EU VAT is added where applicable and the VAT-reverse-charge regime applies for VAT-registered businesses with a valid number.
150+ open-source apps across automation, team chat, file sync, analytics, AI, password management, email marketing, dev tools, project management, smart home, CMS, and federated social. See the full catalog →
Yes. Every instance comes with a web-based terminal and a file manager in your DANIAN management dashboard. Useful for managing your data and customizations.
Resources scale with your usage. If your app needs more vCPU, RAM, or storage, we add it — and we ask first before any change to your plan. €9 is the floor; resource-heavy workloads may price higher, but you'll always know in advance.
Yes. We have both a Partner program and an Affiliate program available. Anybody can sign up.
