ABOUT THE SOFTWARE

What is LibreTranslate

LibreTranslate is an open-source machine translation API. It translates text, detects languages, and translates document files across dozens of language pairs — all from software you can run on your own infrastructure, with no third-party API in the path.

LibreTranslate is released under the AGPL-3.0 licence and maintained by Piero Toffanin. It exposes a small JSON REST API: a translate endpoint, a language-detection endpoint, a supported-languages endpoint, and a file-translation endpoint for office and subtitle formats.

Under the hood it runs the Argos Translate engine, which serves OpenNMT models through the CTranslate2 runtime. Each language pair adds roughly 200 MB of memory and 200 to 300 MB of disk, so a typical multi-language instance uses a few gigabytes of RAM rather than the eight-plus a full install needs. Because the models live on the machine, an instance can run fully offline once they are downloaded.

FEATURES

What LibreTranslate does

LibreTranslate is built around a single, predictable translation API. These are the application's own capabilities — the things your code calls and your team uses, independent of the platform we run them on.

Text translation API

Send text and a target language to the translate endpoint, get translated text back as JSON. Source language is optional.

Document translation

Post a TXT, ODT, ODP, DOCX, PPTX, EPUB, HTML, or SRT file to the file endpoint and download the translated version.

API keys and rate limiting

Issue a key per customer or integration, each with its own request rate, and meter access without a third party in the loop.

Argos model ecosystem

Pull official language packages, or install a custom model trained with the Locomotive toolkit for domain-specific text.

Automatic language detection

The detect endpoint returns the most likely source language and a confidence score, so you can translate without knowing the input language.

Self-hosted REST API

A small, documented JSON API. Point existing integrations at your base URL with a single configuration change.

Offline operation

Models run on the machine. Once downloaded, an instance translates with no outbound internet access at all.

Monitoring endpoint

An optional metrics endpoint exposes request counts and timings for your own dashboards and usage records.

WHAT'S ALWAYS INCLUDED

Every app. Fully managed.
Nothing extra to pay for.

Every app you deploy includes the full managed service — security, backups, updates, and support from day one.

Automatic updates and patches

Apps run the latest stable version. Security patches applied silently, with rollback if needed.

Daily off-site backups

Multiple daily backups in redundant off-site locations. One-click restore if anything goes wrong.

24/7 uptime monitoring

Continuous monitoring with instant alerting. We respond before you notice.

SSL, firewall, DDoS protection

Auto-renewing SSL, hardened firewall rules, DDoS mitigation on every deployment.

Performance and scaling

We monitor resource usage continuously. When your app needs more headroom, we flag it and upgrade with your explicit approval.

Dedicated engineering support

Real engineers on chat. DNS, SMTP & migration help. All included in €9.

WHY MANAGED

Why teams pick managed LibreTranslate

From August 2026 the AI Act adds transparency duties to translated content, and public translation APIs raise a harder question first: where does your text go? DeepL's free tier trains on the text you upload. Self-hosting closes that gap — managed self-hosting closes it without the operational tail.

Running LibreTranslate yourself is more than starting a container. The project's own install guide recommends running it under Gunicorn to avoid memory leaks, and that advice exists for a reason. Open issues #545 and #693 document memory climbing under sustained API load until the process is killed and has to be restarted. A translation API that quietly leaks RAM is a 2am problem waiting for production traffic.

There is also model management. The public demo sometimes runs newer Argos models than the ones published to the package index, so a vanilla instance can lag on specific pairs. Keeping models current, recycling workers, bounding memory, renewing certificates, and verifying backups is a recurring job, not a one-time setup.

USE CASES

Three teams who run LibreTranslate on DANIAN

These are representative team types we set up most often. Each starts with the same flat €9 plan.

ONLINE RETAILER

Localizing 12,000 SKUs without the per-character meter

A merchant expanding to German, Spanish, Italian, and Dutch preloads six languages, then batch-translates product titles and descriptions overnight into the CMS. At about 4 million characters a month, a metered API runs near $100; here it is flat €9, in the region they chose.

B2B SUPPORT TEAM

Auto-translating tickets that carry customer data

A help desk pipes each inbound ticket through detect, then translate, and reverse-translates replies. Ten languages are loaded, with a key per agent at 120 requests a minute. Because ticket bodies carry personal data, keeping translation in-house removes the third-party transfer entirely.

LAW FIRM OR CLINIC

Keeping privileged text on infrastructure they control

A firm bound by client confidentiality cannot send matter text to a public API. They run an instance in their chosen region, restrict it to the languages their clients speak, require an API key, and disable the public web interface. Nothing leaves the box.

COMPARISON

Four ways to run LibreTranslate

There are four honest ways to get machine translation into your product. A metered SaaS API, a self-managed VPS, a home server, or a managed instance. The figures below use published 2026 prices and realistic monthly character volumes.

 PATH1M CHARS/MO5M CHARS/MO10M CHARS/MOYOUR OPS TIME

proprietary SaaS

Self-host on a VPS

DANIAN Managed LibreTranslate€9/mo€9/mo€9/mo0 hrs. Backups, updates, monitoring, and memory hygiene are ours.

Volumes are after each provider's free tier. The metered APIs scale with characters; the flat €9 does not. At 5 million characters a month, a metered API runs roughly $900–$1,560 a year against €108 on DANIAN.

BY INDUSTRY

LibreTranslate for specific industries

Some industries cannot route text through a translation API they do not control. For them, the value is not the price — it is that the text never leaves the instance. Four fits we configure differently.

Legal work runs on attorney–client confidentiality, so a paralegal cannot paste a contract clause into a public translation box. We run LibreTranslate in the region you choose, load the language pairs your matters actually involve, set a high character limit for paragraph-length clauses, require a key per attorney, and turn off the public web interface.

A common workflow: drop a DOCX into a watch folder and the file endpoint returns the translated version, with the original never touching an outside service. A 300-page litigation bundle of roughly 600,000 characters costs nothing extra on the flat €9 plan, where a metered API would bill it per character.
Patient-record confidentiality means clinical text should not be sent to an external model. We can deploy LibreTranslate fully sealed — models baked into the image, inference on the CPU, no outbound connection — in the region you choose. We preload the national language plus the top patient-demographic languages, which for many clinics means German, English, Turkish, Arabic, Polish, and Romanian.

A typical workflow translates intake notes for a clinician to review against the back-translation, all inside the hospital network. A clinic translating 20,000 notes a month, around 16 million characters, pays the same €9 as a clinic translating one — a metered API at that volume runs into the hundreds of dollars monthly.
Public bodies face data-residency mandates, and from August 2026 the AI Act adds transparency duties to translated content. We host LibreTranslate in the region you pick, restrict it to the official languages with models available, require API keys, and keep the monitoring endpoint on so usage is recorded for your own logs.

A municipality might translate citizen-services pages on a schedule; a ministry might expose the translate endpoint internally for civil-service drafts. The flat €9 rate removes the per-character line item that makes high-volume public translation hard to budget — the kind of volume where a translation directorate processes millions of documents a year.
Support tickets and in-app messages routinely carry customer personal data, so routing them through a public translation API creates a third-party transfer your team then has to document and defend. We issue one API key per agent or integration, set a global rate limit with higher per-key rates for your busiest hours, preload your top ten customer languages, and enable the fast sentence-boundary detector for quicker responses.

A 50-agent desk translating around 37 million characters a month pays €9, against several hundred dollars on a metered API — and the original language of every message stays preserved alongside the translation.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Everything teams ask before signing up — answered straight, without sales speak.

Three groups: technical setup, migration, and how DANIAN works as a service.

01

Technical and configuration

It translates TXT, ODT, ODP, DOCX, PPTX, EPUB, HTML, and SRT files through the file endpoint. PDF is not yet supported upstream. The standard workaround is to convert the PDF to DOCX first, then post it to the file endpoint.
For common language pairs the output is usable and broadly comparable for general content. For low-resource pairs and idiomatic text, Google and DeepL pull ahead. For sensitive content we recommend a back-translation review step regardless of engine. The trade-off is control: your text never leaves the instance you run.

02

Migration and onboarding

We can activate your app on your own custom domain/subdomain. Examples: mydomain.com, anyword.mydomain.com.
Or, on our randomized free subdomain. Example: 963.apps.danian.cloud
If you wish to use a custom domain/subdomain, select that option when ordering your app (or notify us later). We will send you the required DNS records and if needed, our tech team will modify them for you.
21 datacenter locations across six continents. You choose the region at provisioning. Application data sits in the region you choose; pick whichever is closest to your users or matches your data-residency preference.
Yes. Request a region migration from the dashboard and we run the move in the background. The system emails you when the migration completes; total transfer time depends on data volume but typical instances finish in a few hours. There is no extra charge for a region change.
Yes. Full data export is available at any time, in a portable format you can bring to any infrastructure.
LibreTranslate exposes a simple JSON REST API with translate, detect, and languages endpoints. Most teams point existing code at the new base URL and adjust the request shape once.

03

Billing, support, and platform

€9 covers everything we do for that app: hardware in the region you choose, daily off-site backups with one-click restore, automatic security patches and version upgrades, 24/7 monitoring, SSL and firewall, and engineering support on Email/LiveChat. There are no setup fees or hidden line items. For more info see our Pricing page.
If you decide to continue, we charge €9/app/month from day 8. If you don't, the trial ends and you can export your data. No card is required for the trial, and we never auto-charge you without explicit consent.
No. The €9/month is flat regardless of how many users log into your app. Add 5 users or 50; the price doesn't change.
24/7 Live chat and email support, both staffed by engineers who run the systems. We handle DNS configuration, SMTP setup, app integrations, performance tuning, troubleshooting, and migration help. Response time is typically under an hour. There is no tier system — every customer gets the same support.
Yes. Cancel from the dashboard. We don't charge a cancellation fee, we don't lock data, and we will export your data to you on request before deletion. data to you on request before deletion.
Every customer instance is backed up daily to a separate region from the primary. We test restores. You can request a restore at any backup point within the retention window — usually 7 days for daily backups.
