ABOUT THE SOFTWARE

What is HumHub

HumHub is an open-source enterprise social network — spaces for teams, profiles for people, wikis for knowledge, files for collaboration, and a real-time activity stream that ties it all together. Used by municipalities, universities, unions, associations, and SMEs as a self-hosted Workplace alternative.

HumHub is licensed under the GNU AGPL-3.0 (Community Edition) and developed by HumHub GmbH & Co. KG in Munich, Germany. The codebase is PHP, built on the Yii 2 framework, with a Bootstrap-5 frontend since version 1.18. Currently it has 6,700+ stars on GitHub and a marketplace of 70+ official, partner, and community modules.

HumHub's growth surged in 2024 after Meta announced the discontinuation of Workplace; thousands of small and mid-sized organisations have moved to a self-hosted HumHub instance during the read-only window between September 2025 and June 2026. The platform's footprint is small: a single managed container handles a working community of a few thousand active users without horizontal sharding, with daily off-site backups measured in gigabytes rather than terabytes.

FEATURES

What HumHub does

HumHub bundles the core surfaces a working community needs — spaces, posts, files, wikis, calendars, chats, mobile push, single sign-on — without the per-feature paywalls of proprietary platforms. Everything below is in the Community Edition.

Spaces

Independent rooms for departments, projects, chapters, or cohorts. Per-space membership, moderation, and visibility rules. Public, protected, or invitation-only.

User profiles and directory

Customisable profile fields, optional follow-graph, full-text directory search. Disable the directory entirely when departments need closed visibility.

Direct messaging and group chats

One-to-one and group conversations as a built-in module — no separate chat product to bolt on. File attachments and emoji-style reactions supported.

Calendar, tasks, polls

Per-Space events, to-do lists, and ballots. Useful for delegate votes, sprint planning, meeting agendas, and recurring committee schedules.

Activity stream and posts

A familiar wall-style timeline with comments, likes, mentions, files, polls, and rich-text. Filter by topic, follow a Space, or follow a person.

Wiki per Space

Markdown-style knowledge base scoped to each Space. Version history on every page; restore an earlier revision in one click. Useful for runbooks and policies.

Files and OnlyOffice integration

Per-Space file folders with role-based read and write permissions. Edit DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX in-browser when OnlyOffice Document Server is connected.

Mobile apps with push

Official HumHub apps for iOS and Android in the App Store and Play Store, with Firebase Cloud Messaging push for new posts, mentions, and direct messages.

WHAT'S ALWAYS INCLUDED

Every app. Fully managed.
Nothing extra to pay for.

Every app you deploy includes the full managed service — security, backups, updates, and support from day one.

Automatic updates and patches

Apps run the latest stable version. Security patches applied silently, with rollback if needed.

Daily off-site backups

Multiple daily backups in redundant off-site locations. One-click restore if anything goes wrong.

24/7 uptime monitoring

Continuous monitoring with instant alerting. We respond before you notice.

SSL, firewall, DDoS protection

Auto-renewing SSL, hardened firewall rules, DDoS mitigation on every deployment.

Performance and scaling

We monitor resource usage continuously. When your app needs more headroom, we flag it and upgrade with your explicit approval.

Dedicated engineering support

Real engineers on chat. DNS, SMTP & migration help. All included in €9.

WHY MANAGED

Why teams pick managed HumHub

On 1 June 2026, Meta permanently deletes every Workplace instance still in read-only mode — about seven million paid users at peak. Most leavers want a community-feel platform they own, not another per-seat SaaS that could be discontinued in three years. HumHub fits; the operational tax of running it does not.

Self-hosting HumHub looks easy from the README, and the first install usually works. The work that compounds afterwards is the part that nobody plans for. HumHub requires two separate cron entries — one for scheduled tasks, one for the background-queue worker — plus a long-running worker process for low-latency notifications. PHP needs upload_max_filesize and post_max_size raised from 2M and 8M to at least 128M, max_execution_time bumped from 30 seconds, and memory_limit set high enough to survive a search reindex. Set up the cron under root and the web server under www-data, as countless guides suggest, and the cache directory in protected/runtime ends up with mixed ownership; the next deploy silently corrupts it and the dashboard shows the persistent "cron does not seem to work properly" banner that thousands of self-hosters hit.

USE CASES

Three teams who run HumHub on DANIAN

These are representative team types we set up most often. Each starts with the same flat €9 plan.

120-PERSON MUNICIPALITY

Leaving Workplace by Meta before the 1 June 2026 cutoff

Germany region. SAML SSO against the existing Active Directory. Spaces by department — citizen services, planning, parks, council. Custom municipal theme, retested before the 1.18 to 1.19 upgrade. About 40GB of historical Workplace content imported in March via the Mass User Import module plus a one-off migration script.

35-PERSON ENGINEERING FIRM

Project-spaces hub when Slack got too noisy and Jira lost the context

Finland region. One Space per active client; closed memberships keep file access scoped. OnlyOffice Document Server wired in the same region for in-browser DOCX and XLSX editing on technical drawings. Wiki for the company's engineering standards. Firebase mobile push for the on-call rotation; calendar synced with internal holidays.

800-MEMBER TRADE UNION

Delegate-democratic portal that scales without per-member SaaS fees

Netherlands region. OpenID Connect SSO against the federation's identity provider. One Space per local chapter, one for the executive committee, one for retired members. Polls module for motion ballots and delegate elections. Mass user import seeded from the member-database CSV; ~150 active monthly posters with email digest delivered each Monday morning.

COMPARISON

Four ways to run HumHub

Pick the path that fits your team's size, technical headcount, and tolerance for operational work. The math below uses three realistic community sizes — 25, 100, and 250 users — because most ESN-category SaaS platforms aren't sold below 50 seats anyway.

Workvivo pricing per the published Business plan starting tier (Q1 2026); Microsoft Viva Engage Communications & Communities is a lower-cost alternative at $2/user/month annual commitment with a Microsoft 365 plan dependency. VPS costs assume a production-class virtual server; ops-time estimate based on standard HumHub maintenance — patching, queue tuning, search reindex, theme upgrades — at a developer's effective hourly cost.

BY INDUSTRY

HumHub for specific industries

HumHub's permission model and module ecosystem make it a real fit for five sectors in particular — public sector, higher education, non-profits and associations, distributed engineering teams, and unions or federations. Each puts different demands on the platform; the configuration choices below are how we tune each one.

Local government runs HumHub as an internal-communications portal — between departments, between elected officials and staff, and sometimes between the council and citizen volunteers. The operating constraint is records-retention: every post, file, and decision needs to remain recoverable for years, often as a statutory obligation.

DANIAN configures daily off-site backups with 30-day retention, on-demand snapshots before every minor-version upgrade, and downloadable backup tarballs from the dashboard. The Spaces model maps cleanly to departmental structure with per-Space moderation. A 120-person municipality replacing Workplace by Meta this quarter ran the full migration in a single weekend; their custom theme survived the upgrade because we retest theme compatibility on a staging snapshot before promoting any 1.x minor release.
Universities use HumHub as a student-and-staff community portal alongside the LMS — course cohorts, student societies, faculty committees, alumni networks. The two demands are identity and scale.

Identity: SAML or OpenID Connect SSO against the institution's identity provider (Shibboleth, Azure AD, Okta). We enable the SAML SSO module by default for higher-ed accounts and help map attribute claims to HumHub profile fields during onboarding so students don't need a second password.

Scale: the default Lucene search engine starts to lag past 5,000 indexed users. We swap in the Professional Edition Solr Search module on request, pinned in the same region, and tune the JVM cache to keep dashboard load under 800ms even at 10,000 active users. One managed instance handles a faculty of 8,000 on the same €9 plan as a 50-person research lab.
Non-profits run HumHub as a member portal — chapter coordination, volunteer onboarding, board discussions, donor stewardship. The bind is budget: per-user SaaS pricing destroys the unit economics of any volunteer-funded organisation.

Workvivo (the platform Meta named as the official Workplace successor) starts at $20,000/year with a 250-user floor — about $80 per member per year just for the platform, before any integration work. HumHub on DANIAN costs €108 per year, total, whether the association has 80 members or 8,000 members. The Polls module covers board elections; invitation-only registration and per-Space moderator roles cover access governance. A 1,000-member trade association runs the same flat plan as a 30-person foundation.
Engineering teams pick HumHub when chat (Slack, Teams) becomes too noisy and ticket trackers (Jira, Linear) don't capture context. The pattern: one Space per active project or client; Wiki for runbooks and standards; Files for design documents; OnlyOffice for in-browser editing.

DANIAN provisions the OnlyOffice Document Server in the same region as the HumHub container so a 30MB CAD-adjacent drawing opens in under 150ms over a typical connection. Per-Space permission roles map cleanly to project-confidentiality tiers without exposing files across clients. A 100-developer firm replacing a tiered Slack workspace at $14.40/user/month saves around $17,200/year and keeps every project artifact searchable in one place rather than scattered across chat scrollback.
Unions and federations run HumHub as a delegate-democratic platform — local chapter coordination, national working groups, motion drafts, ballots, archival of historical decisions. The non-negotiables are continuity (years of decisions need to remain searchable) and fair-balloting practice (every vote needs to be auditable).

DANIAN keeps the database as a single managed MySQL instance per HumHub deployment, with daily logical dumps retained for 7 days. The Polls module records the time and user of every vote; the Custom Pages module hosts current bylaws and constitution at stable URLs. A 1,500-member national union runs the entire portal — one Space per local, one for the executive, one for retired members — on a single €9 plan.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Everything teams ask before signing up — answered straight, without sales speak.

Three groups: technical setup, migration, and how DANIAN works as a service.

01

Technical and configuration

HumHub's default PHP limits (upload_max_filesize 2M, post_max_size 8M, max_execution_time 30s, memory_limit 128M) break file uploads, search reindexing, and large-Space migrations. We ship upload_max_filesize and post_max_size at 256M, max_execution_time at 600 seconds for CLI tasks, and memory_limit at 512M. The web layer has mod_xsendfile enabled so the application doesn't proxy attachment downloads through PHP.
The HumHub iOS and Android apps deliver push through Firebase Cloud Messaging via the official Push Notifications (Firebase) module. We register the module against either a customer-provided Firebase project (recommended for branded mobile apps) or the shared project for the stock HumHub apps in the App Store and Play Store. End users authenticate to mobile with the same SSO they use on web.
Yes. DANIAN ships the Community Edition (AGPL-3.0) by default and installs Professional Edition modules — Advanced LDAP, Solr Search, Custom Pages Pro, Theme Builder Pro, SAML SSO Premium — when the customer holds an active Professional Edition licence from HumHub GmbH. The licence key goes into Administration → Marketplace → Settings and applies immediately. Hosting price stays at €9/month; the Professional Edition fee goes to HumHub directly.
We provision the OnlyOffice Document Server as a sibling container in the same region as the HumHub instance and wire the official OnlyOffice connector module (v4 as of February 2026). Users open a DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX from any Files attachment and edit in-browser, with co-editing and version history. The Document Server is licensed by the customer separately; we handle the network plumbing and the JWT secret rotation.
HumHub supports LDAP authentication against AD and OpenLDAP out of the core (Administration → Users → Settings → LDAP), and SAML 2.0 or OpenID Connect through marketplace modules. We help map the LDAP ID attribute carefully — using objectGUID for AD avoids the recurring "user disappeared after email change" problem that comes from binding to userPrincipalName. SSO via Azure AD or Entra ID typically runs over OIDC.

02

Migration and onboarding

We can activate your app on your own custom domain/subdomain. Examples: mydomain.com, anyword.mydomain.com.
Or, on our randomized free subdomain. Example: 963.apps.danian.cloud
If you wish to use a custom domain/subdomain, select that option when ordering your app (or notify us later). We will send you the required DNS records and if needed, our tech team will modify them for you.
21 datacenter locations across six continents. You choose the region at provisioning. Application data sits in the region you choose; pick whichever is closest to your users or matches your data-residency preference.
Yes. Request a region migration from the dashboard and we run the move in the background. The system emails you when the migration completes; total transfer time depends on data volume but typical instances finish in a few hours. There is no extra charge for a region change.
Yes. Full data export is available at any time, in a portable format you can bring to any infrastructure.
Partially. HumHub does not currently support full multi-tenancy — separate user bases that can't see each other in the directory or search. What it does support is private Spaces with closed membership, profile-visibility rules, and a deactivated user directory. For most departmental separation use cases this is sufficient; for strict tenant isolation, run two HumHub instances on two DANIAN containers.
With SSO, users authenticate on first login and HumHub creates the account automatically — set the default group and default Spaces to join on first sign-in. Without SSO, use the Mass User Import module (Professional Edition) or LDAP sync to bulk-create accounts from a CSV or directory query. Either path scales to a few thousand users in a single pass.

03

Billing, support, and platform

€9 covers everything we do for that app: hardware in the region you choose, daily off-site backups with one-click restore, automatic security patches and version upgrades, 24/7 monitoring, SSL and firewall, and engineering support on Email/LiveChat.
