ABOUT THE SOFTWARE

What is Grist

Grist is an open-source relational spreadsheet-database. It keeps the familiar grid of a spreadsheet on top of a real relational model, adds Python formulas and granular permissions, and lets teams build small apps without writing a backend.

Grist is developed by Grist Labs, an NYC-based company, and released as open source under the Apache-2.0 licence. The core, grist-core, is the same engine that powers Grist's own hosted service, and it carries more than 11,000 stars on GitHub. France's public-sector digital agencies — DINUM and ANCT — are now among the project's largest contributors, and DINUM funds a Grist bug-bounty programme that benefits every self-hoster.

Each Grist document is a single, self-contained SQLite file — the most widely deployed database engine in the world. That design makes a backup something you can confidently restore in full, and it makes moving between hosts straightforward. Grist anchors La Suite Numérique, France's sovereign digital workspace, where it grew from roughly 1,000 to roughly 20,000 monthly active users in a year and is used across 15 ministries and all 100 prefectures.

FEATURES

What Grist does

Grist is a spreadsheet you can trust with structure. It links tables like a database, runs Python where a spreadsheet would stop, controls who sees which rows, and turns a document into a small app with forms and dashboards.

Python formulas

Full Python syntax and the standard library, alongside familiar functions like IF, COUNT, and CONCATENATE. Trigger formulas can set values when records are added or changed.

Relational structure

Reference columns link records across tables, so data lives once and connects everywhere. You get a relational model with the editing feel of a grid.

Granular access rules

Control access down to individual rows, columns, and tables, driven by user attributes. One shared document can safely serve many roles at once.

Linked widgets and layouts

Lay out pages with drag-and-drop, then link distinct widgets — table, card, chart — so selecting a record filters the rest. No cramming everything into one grid.

Native forms

Build forms that feed directly into a table, with file attachments, hidden fields, and pre-population through URL parameters. Collect structured data without a separate tool.

REST API and webhooks

A REST API with an interactive console, configurable outgoing webhooks, and Zapier actions and triggers connect Grist to the systems your team already runs.

Imports and incremental imports

Import directly from Airtable, Excel, CSV, and Google Drive. Incremental imports add each month's data without creating duplicate rows.

Portable SQLite documents

Every document is one self-contained SQLite file any tool can read. That keeps your data portable and your backups trustworthy.

WHAT'S ALWAYS INCLUDED

Every app. Fully managed.
Nothing extra to pay for.

Every app on DANIAN ships with the same operational baseline. You do not choose a backup add-on or a monitoring tier. Hosting, patching, backups, SSL, and support are part of the €9, and they apply to Grist the same way they apply to everything else in the catalog.

Automatic updates and patches

Apps run the latest stable version. Security patches applied silently, with rollback if needed.

Daily off-site backups

Multiple daily backups in redundant off-site locations. One-click restore if anything goes wrong.

24/7 uptime monitoring

Continuous monitoring with instant alerting. We respond before you notice.

SSL, firewall, DDoS protection

Auto-renewing SSL, hardened firewall rules, DDoS mitigation on every deployment.

Performance and scaling

We monitor resource usage continuously. When your app needs more headroom, we flag it and upgrade with your explicit approval.

Dedicated engineering support

Real engineers by email and ticket. DNS, SMTP & migration help. All included in €9.

WHY MANAGED

Why teams pick managed Grist

In February 2026 Airtable cut its free tier to 1,000 records per base with no notice, after doubling its entry price to $20 per editor. Teams priced out of the proprietary grid look at Grist — then meet the cost of running it themselves.

Running Grist is not just starting a container. It means tracking releases, renewing certificates, watching disk and memory, verifying backups, and being awake when something breaks. That is steady work, and it is the work the €9 removes.

Grist also has one setting that matters more than the rest. Because formulas are Python, Grist runs them in a sandbox — and the choice of sandbox is consequential. In January 2026, researchers disclosed Cellbreak (CVE-2026-24002), a sandbox-escape that let a malicious document run code on the host in one common configuration. The fix shipped in Grist 1.7.9. The safer sandbox mode, meanwhile, is the one that is hardest to stand up: it needs a specific kernel capability and CPU feature, and it fails with cryptic gateway errors when the container is not set up exactly right.

USE CASES

Three teams who run Grist on DANIAN

Grist fits teams that have outgrown a shared spreadsheet but do not want a per-seat database bill. Here are three shapes that come up often — a grant-funded nonprofit, a research group, and a distributed operations team.

GRANT-FUNDED NONPROFIT

Leaving Airtable after the free-tier record cut

Runs Grist in Germany. Native forms handle grant intake and feed a pipeline table; access rules let partner organisations see only their own rows. A REST call pushes totals to a reporting dashboard. One flat €9, not $20 per editor.

UNIVERSITY RESEARCH GROUP

A specimen registry with retention built in

Hosts Grist in Canada. Reference columns link samples to experiments and grant milestones; row-level access rules separate project teams. Instrument exports arrive as incremental CSV imports, and portable SQLite documents satisfy the funder's retention plan.

DISTRIBUTED OPERATIONS TEAM

Retiring a fragile shared spreadsheet

Runs Grist in Singapore, close to the team. Inventory and order tracking moved into one document; trigger formulas stamp who changed each row, and a webhook posts status changes to chat. 50,000-plus records, no per-record upgrade tax.

COMPARISON

Four ways to run Grist

There are four honest paths to a working Grist. The proprietary grid you are replacing, a VPS you run yourself, a server in the office, or a managed instance. The totals below are at one, five, and ten people.

BY INDUSTRY

Grist for specific industries

Some sectors put particular demands on a spreadsheet-database — where the data may live, who may see which rows, and how long records must be kept. Four where Grist on DANIAN fits especially well are below.

Public-sector teams work under data-residency and sovereignty requirements that decide where records may live. On DANIAN you pin Grist to a chosen region, with each document's formula execution isolated from the network and daily off-site backups of the SQLite store.

The common public-administration workloads are budget dashboards and project-portfolio tracking — the same uses French agencies run. Grist anchors La Suite Numérique, France's sovereign digital workspace; usage in French public administration grew roughly tenfold, from about 1,000 to about 20,000 monthly active users between January 2025 and January 2026, across 15 ministries and all 100 prefectures.
Research groups answer to funder data-management-plan and records-retention requirements that outlast any single project. On DANIAN you set row- and column-level access rules per project, pin the instance to the region you choose, and keep portable SQLite documents for archival.

A typical workflow is a sample or specimen registry linked to experiments and grant milestones through reference columns. Access can be controlled down to individual rows and columns, and each document is a single SQLite file any tool can read — which makes a backup something you can confidently restore in full.
Nonprofits run on grant-reporting cadences and careful handling of beneficiary data, usually with more viewers than editors. On DANIAN you build native forms for intake that feed a pipeline table, and set access rules so partner organisations see only their own records.

A grant pipeline and a beneficiary registry can live in one document. The cost matters here: DANIAN is a flat €9/month regardless of editors, while Airtable's Team plan lists at $20 per seat per month — $100 at five editors — and its free tier was cut to 1,000 records per base in February 2026.
Operations teams usually outgrow a shared spreadsheet long before they admit it — version conflicts, broken references, and no record of who changed what. On DANIAN you replace that with reference columns and trigger formulas that stamp who edited each row, hosted in the region closest to your team.

Inventory, a lightweight CRM, and order tracking consolidate into one document. You can hold 50,000-plus records in a single document without the per-record forced upgrade that pushes spreadsheet-database SaaS users from a roughly $20 to a roughly $45 per-seat tier.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Three groups of questions: the technical details of running Grist, what moving from another tool looks like, and how billing, support, and the platform work.

Three groups: technical setup, migration, and how DANIAN works as a service.

01

Technical and configuration

Grist uses Python as its formula language, so each document can run real code. That power is also a risk if formulas are not isolated. We run each document's formula execution sandboxed and isolated from the network, and we keep instances on the patched release line so untrusted documents cannot reach the host.
Cellbreak (CVE-2026-24002) was a sandbox-escape disclosed in January 2026 that affected one Grist formula-sandbox mode, allowing a malicious document to run code on the host. It was fixed in Grist 1.7.9 and later. We pin instances to the patched line, so DANIAN customers are not exposed to it.
We run Grist's formula sandbox isolated from the network and from other tenants' documents, and we keep it on the current patched release. The point of the sandbox is that one customer's formulas can never read another customer's data or reach the underlying host. We handle the configuration so you never set an environment variable.
Grist's assistant generates formulas by calling an OpenAI-compatible model endpoint. It works on a managed instance when you supply your own model key, which keeps your prompts and data under your control. Tell us on chat and we'll point your instance at the endpoint you choose.
We deploy grist-oss, the official Docker image of grist-core, the Apache-2.0 open-source edition that powers Grist's own hosted service. Grist Labs also sells a separate paid full edition with extra features such as automations, an AI assistant, audit-log streaming, and advanced admin controls; those extras are licensed from Grist Labs and are not part of the open-source edition. The day-to-day spreadsheet, database, and app-building features are all here.
Yes. Grist exposes a REST API with an interactive console, plus configurable outgoing webhooks and Zapier actions and triggers. You can read and write records from your own scripts, push changes to other systems, and connect Grist to the tools your team already runs.
Yes. Grist supports custom widgets — small HTML, CSS, and JavaScript apps embedded inside a document — and ships with the Grist Labs and community widget repository. We keep that repository enabled, so you can drop in maps, charts, and bespoke views without building infrastructure for them.
The official, unmodified grist-oss Docker image from Grist Labs, the Community edition build of grist-core. We keep instances on the current patched release line and never fork or modify the software.

02

Migration and onboarding

21 datacenter locations across six continents. You choose the region at provisioning. Application data sits in the region you choose; pick whichever is closest to your users or matches your data-residency preference.
Yes. Request a region migration from the dashboard and we run the move in the background. The system emails you when the migration completes; total transfer time depends on data volume but typical instances finish in a few hours. There is no extra charge for a region change.
Yes. Full data export is available at any time, in a portable format you can bring to any infrastructure.
Yes. Grist imports directly from Airtable, and it also reads Excel files, CSV files, and Google Drive. The model will feel familiar if you are coming from Airtable, so tables, columns, and records line up without you rebuilding the structure by hand.
Grist supports incremental imports, so you can bring in a monthly CSV — for example the last period's activity — and add the next period later without creating duplicate rows. It keeps a single cumulative table that your formulas update automatically.
Every Grist document is a self-contained SQLite file, and SQLite is the most widely deployed database engine there is. You can export your documents at any time and open them with any SQLite tool. We won't lock your data in, and we won't hold an export hostage if you decide to move.

03

Billing, support, and platform

€9 covers everything we do for that app: hardware in the region you choose, daily off-site backups with one-click restore, automatic security patches and version upgrades, 24/7 monitoring, SSL and firewall, and engineering support on email and the ticket section in the client portal. There are no setup fees or hidden line items. For more info see our Pricing page.
If you decide to continue, we charge €9/app/month from day 8. If you don't, the trial ends and you can export your data. No card is required for the trial, and we never auto-charge you without explicit consent.
No. The €9/month is flat regardless of how many users log into your app. Add 5 users or 50; the price doesn't change.
24/7 email and ticket support, both staffed by engineers who run the systems. We handle DNS configuration, SMTP setup, app integrations, performance tuning, troubleshooting, and migration help. Response time is typically under an hour. There is no tier system — every customer gets the same support.
Yes. Cancel from the dashboard. We don't charge a cancellation fee, we don't lock data, and we will export your data to you on request before deletion. data to you on request before deletion.
Every customer instance is backed up daily to a separate region from the primary. We test restores. You can request a restore at any backup point within the retention window — usually 7 days for daily backups.
