What is Greenlight

Greenlight is the simple web front-end for BigBlueButton — the open-source virtual classroom used by universities, schools, and government training programs around the world. Teachers schedule rooms, students join through a single link, recordings publish back to the LMS.

The project is published under the LGPL-3.0 license and maintained by BigBlueButton Inc., the company behind BBB, with commercial support coming from Blindside Networks in Ottawa.

BBB scales meaningfully in production. France's national education platform Apps.education.fr is built on BigBlueButton and serves roughly 330,000 daily users by end of 2025, with the platform engineered for up to 40,000 concurrent users and a 500,000-user surge ceiling. Universität Osnabrück, TU Berlin, Humboldt-Universität, TH Mittelhessen, the French Ministry of Education, and the Brazilian National Research and Education Network are named in the BBB project's own publiccode.yml as known operators.

WHY MANAGED

Why teams pick managed Greenlight

In August 2023 a Zoom Terms-of-Service update granted the company rights to use customer audio, video, and chat to train AI — walked back partially after public backlash. The carve-out applies only to "Customer Content," and consent is granted by the account owner. For schools and universities, that is a problem that has not gone away.

Self-hosting BBB solves the trust problem and replaces a per-host bill with a flat one, but the day-two operational surface is real. The single most common failure mode in the BBB issue tracker is FreeSWITCH NAT configuration: WebRTC audio fails with error 1002 or 1007 even when video works, because FreeSWITCH advertises the server's internal IP rather than its public one. Issue #17134 on the BBB repo is the canonical write-up — the fix is editing /opt/freeswitch/conf/vars.xml and external.xml, and on a busy installation that's a 2 a.m. call.

The other day-two failure is Greenlight's open registration default. The v2 sample.env shipped with DEFAULT_REGISTRATION="open," meaning anyone with the URL could create an account and consume server resources. That was filed as issue #5162 in 2021 and is the kind of thing you find out you had wrong when the resource graph goes sideways during a Tuesday-morning class.

Greenlight for specific industries

A virtual classroom in higher ed is not the same surface as one in vocational training or one in a government agency. The compliance shape, the cohort size, and the recording-retention policy diverge — these are the four industries where the BBB+Greenlight fit is sharpest.

Universities in the US sit under FERPA (20 U.S.C. § 1232g) for student educational records; non-US institutions under regional data-protection regulation and Schrems II constraints on US-resident SaaS. Both regimes are easier to reason about when the recording disk and the meeting server are in a region the institution chose.

On DANIAN we run each university tenant in an isolated container, federate the campus Shibboleth IdP through Keycloak into Greenlight v3 over OpenID Connect, and pin the recording region. Room launches come from Moodle, Canvas, or Sakai over LTI 1.3; recording publishes back into the course activity automatically; activity-completion gates on attendance threshold.

Sizing reference: BigBlueButton recommends keeping individual meetings to 100 participants or fewer for stable interaction, and a single reference-configured BBB server handles around 200 concurrent users across multiple rooms. Scalelite layers in behind that line.
K-12 deployments need to satisfy COPPA for under-13 students in the US and equivalent rules at the state level — California SOPIPA, New York Education Law 2-d, Illinois SOPPA — plus international parallels. Most of these statutes care less about which vendor you use and more about what defaults the children join under.

The DANIAN defaults for K-12 set Greenlight registration to Approve/Decline, viewer cameras off, private chat disabled, and recording off unless a safeguarding policy explicitly requires it. Teachers schedule classes inside the LMS; students join through their school identity; breakout rooms split a class for small-group reading or maths.

The free Moodle BigBlueButton tier caps classes at 25 users and 60 minutes — a useful sizing reference for what "free" gets you in this segment. A managed BBB server lifts both ceilings; what stays unchanged is that the recording, the chat transcript, and the shared notes live on a disk the school controls.
Accrediting bodies — IACET CEUs and NCCRS in the US, OFQUAL in the UK, AZAV for Bildungsträger in Germany, ISO 9001 training-record clauses globally — require auditable attendance and retention. The artefact the auditor wants is the cohort-attended-the-session record plus the session itself, retained for the policy window.

We turn recording on by default, set retention to 24 months, and enable the Learning Analytics Dashboard so the CSV export captures attendance, raise-hand events, poll responses, and the built-in Quiz results that shipped in BBB 3.0.11. The MP4 export job runs nightly; the archive is what the auditor sees.

Capacity planning is concrete here: native BBB recordings run around 150 MB per hour at 720p, which sets the storage shape for the retention window. A 40-hour cohort at weekly cadence over a year produces roughly 6 GB per learning track — small enough that off-site backup is cheap.
Public-sector buyers face national sovereignty rules and Schrems II constraints on US-resident SaaS. The Data Privacy Framework was upheld at the General Court in September 2025 but is now on appeal at the CJEU (Case C-703/25 P); the US PCLOB lost quorum in January 2025. The legal ground is moving, and procurement teams notice.

For government tenants we run Greenlight in a sovereign region of the customer's choice with no third-party telemetry, a dedicated TURN server on a public IP, full disk encryption, and short log retention (90 days maximum). Identity federates through the agency IdP; recordings land in agency-managed object storage.

Technical and configuration

A reference-configuration BBB server handles around 200 concurrent users across all rooms. The project recommends keeping any single meeting to 100 participants or fewer for stable interaction.
Greenlight v3 supports OpenID Connect natively. SAML and LDAP work by fronting Greenlight with Keycloak, which the BBB installer ships optionally. The project does not plan to add native SAML — the maintainers state that OIDC providers should be used to bridge SAML upstream. We wire the OPENID_CONNECT_* environment variables on your behalf during setup, and federate against your campus IdP.
Moodle 4.0 and later ship a built-in BigBlueButton activity module — no plugin install. Canvas connects through the BBB LTI app in the Canvas App Center. Sakai uses the BigBlueButton Sakai tool. Blackboard works through the BBB Building Block. We provide the LTI key and secret, you paste them into the LMS once, and rooms appear as course activities afterwards.
Greenlight v3 is a full rewrite. Rails 7 with a React front-end replaced the older v2 stack. PostgreSQL is the only supported database now. The deployment model is Docker-compose. Authentication is OpenID Connect — no native SAML. The migration tool ships under bin/rake — migrations:roles, users, rooms, and settings — and recordings stay on the BBB server unchanged across the upgrade.
No. Transport between browser and server is encrypted (TLS for control, DTLS-SRTP for media), but the BBB server processes audio, video, and chat in cleartext because mixing, recording, and the live HTML5 client experience require it. If your compliance team needs true end-to-end encryption on every media leg, BBB is not the right tool — you want a peer-to-peer system. The E2EE feature request is tracked upstream as issue #9893 with no firm ETA.
All four ship. Breakout rooms split a session into up to 8 sub-rooms with a countdown timer. Polls are anonymous or named, multi-choice or response. The multi-user whiteboard is tldraw v2 — annotation on slides, freehand, shapes, text. Shared notes are BlockNote in BBB 3.0. BBB 3.0.11 added a built-in Quiz feature. BBB 3.0.19 added a Unified Layout that pins the presenter cam and screen-share side by side.
BBB runs entirely in the browser on iOS Safari and Android Chrome with the same UI. There is no separate native app to download. Receiving a shared screen, joining audio and video, raising hand, and using the whiteboard all work from a phone. Sharing your screen from a phone is the one feature that's not supported — that's a WebRTC limitation, not a BBB one.
