ABOUT THE SOFTWARE

What is FacilMap

FacilMap is a privacy-friendly, open-source online map. It combines OpenStreetMap-based layers with place search, trip routing, and live collaborative editing, letting several people build and annotate the same map at once, from a shared link, with no accounts to manage.

FacilMap has been developed since 2009 by Candid Dauth and is released under the AGPL-3.0 license. It runs on Node.js with a database (MariaDB, PostgreSQL, MySQL, or SQLite) and pulls map tiles, routing, and geocoding from external OpenStreetMap-ecosystem services. The whole stack is self-hostable, which is why you can run it under your own domain, with your own data, rather than inside someone else's account.

Every FacilMap map carries three links: an admin link, an editable link, and a read-only link. The URL itself is the credential: share the editable link and someone can add markers; share the read-only link and they can only look. Maps support GPX, KML, and GeoJSON import and export, custom marker and line types with form fields, saved views, and a Socket.io API for programmatic access.

FEATURES

What FacilMap does

FacilMap is built for collaborative trip planning and custom maps. Several people edit the same map live, lay out routes with elevation profiles, drop typed markers, and switch between topographic, cycling, and street base layers, then export the result or embed it on a website.

Live collaborative editing

Several people edit one map at the same time from a shared link. Changes appear live for everyone, with no accounts to create or manage.

Routing with elevation

Plan walking, cycling, or driving routes with draggable waypoints and an elevation profile, powered by Mapbox and OpenRouteService.

Topographic and cycling layers

Switch between street, OpenTopoMap, CyclOSM, and Hike & Bike base layers, plus Waymarked Trails overlays for hiking and cycling routes.

Custom marker and line types

Define your own marker and line categories with form fields (capacity, contact, status), and FacilMap builds the map legend automatically.

Place search

Find addresses and points of interest through OpenStreetMap's geocoder, then save them as markers on your map in one click.

Import and export

Import GPX, KML, OSM, and GeoJSON, and export the same formats, CSV, or a ZIP of per-route GPX files for offline GPS apps.

Saved views and filters

Save map states as named views and filter what's shown, so each team or department sees only the markers that matter to them.

Embed and API

Embed a read-only or editable map in an iframe, or drive it programmatically through the Socket.io API and client library.

Automatic updates and patches

Apps run the latest stable version. Security patches applied silently, with rollback if needed.

Daily off-site backups

Multiple daily backups in redundant off-site locations. One-click restore if anything goes wrong.

24/7 uptime monitoring

Continuous monitoring with instant alerting. We respond before you notice.

SSL, firewall, DDoS protection

Auto-renewing SSL, hardened firewall rules, DDoS mitigation on every deployment.

Performance and scaling

We monitor resource usage continuously. When your app needs more headroom, we flag it and upgrade with your explicit approval.

Dedicated engineering support

Real engineers by email and ticket. DNS, SMTP & migration help. All included in €9.

WHY MANAGED

Why teams pick managed FacilMap

In March 2025, Google replaced the long-standing $200 monthly Maps Platform credit with smaller per-service free tiers. Teams that treated Google Maps as effectively free started getting bills, and many looked to OpenStreetMap-based tools like FacilMap instead.

Running FacilMap yourself is more than starting a Node process and walking away. The map's search, routing, and elevation features each call out to a separate external service, and each one has its own key, its own monthly quota, and its own usage policy. Keeping those configured, funded, and rotated is the actual job, and none of it shows up until the day something stops working.

USE CASES

Three teams who run FacilMap on DANIAN

FacilMap fits any team that needs several people building one map together. Three patterns come up most often: outdoor groups planning routes, event crews mapping a site, and tourism teams publishing a public points-of-interest map.

HIKING & CYCLING CLUB

Planning a weekend route together on a Friday call

Five club members open the editable link during a video call and drag the route to skirt a closed trail, watching the elevation profile update. One exports a ZIP of per-route GPX files to a handheld GPS; the others bookmark the read-only link on their phones. Base layers: OpenTopoMap and Hike & Bike.

EVENT PRODUCTION TEAM

Mapping stages, generators, and first-aid points

The site lead holds the admin link and defines custom marker types (stage, generator, first-aid), each with capacity and contact fields. Vendor coordinators get the editable link; security and press get the read-only link. The map is embedded as an iframe on the event intranet, filtered by saved views per department.

TOURISM BOARD

A public 'things to do' map three staff maintain

Three communications staff co-edit the official points-of-interest map, switching between street and topographic layers and grouping markers by category. The director keeps the admin link; the team shares the editable link; a read-only iframe is published on the destination website, rebranded with the board's name and styling.

COMPARISON

Four ways to run FacilMap

FacilMap itself has no paid seats: a map can have as many editors as you share the link with. So the real question is what it costs to keep the software and its map services running. Here are four paths, with the monthly cost at one, five, and ten people.

How you run it1 person5 people10 peopleOngoing work
Proprietary mapping SaaS$110/mo$220/mo~$417/moNone, but charged per seat, billed annually, not self-hostable, and your data lives in their cloud.
Self-host on a VPS~$24/mo~$24/mo~$24/mo1–2 hrs/month: you run the database, private geocoding, and the routing and tile tokens yourself.
Home server€650–1,500 once + €17–32/mosamesame2–4 hrs/month, plus business internet, a static IP, and an off-site backup target.
DANIAN managed FacilMap€9/mo€9/mo€9/moNone: we run the map services, backups, updates, and monitoring.

Proprietary SaaS figures use Maptive Pro and Team pricing, billed annually; the 10-person figure adds five additional licences. The VPS path assumes a $24/month, 2 vCPU / 4 GB production-class server plus your own map-service keys. Home-server hardware is amortised over 36 months at standard metered electricity rates.

At one person, the proprietary path costs roughly twelve times the managed FacilMap price. At ten, the gap widens, because that path charges per seat while the others do not. The self-host and home-server paths look cheaper than the SaaS on the sticker, but the monthly figure leaves out the hours you spend keeping the map services running.

BY INDUSTRY

FacilMap for specific industries

Different fields put different demands on a shared map. These four use FacilMap in ways that shape how we configure it: the base layers we default to, the routing profiles we preset, and the export formats their downstream tools expect.

Trail organisations grade routes against published conventions (the SAC Hiking Scale for walking paths, the IMBA difficulty rating for mountain-bike trails), and those grades have to be legible on the map volunteers carry. For these teams we default to the OpenTopoMap and Hike & Bike base layers, enable the Waymarked Trails overlay, and preset the OpenRouteService hiking and cycling routing profiles. A typical workflow: volunteer stewards add downed-tree or washout markers with a custom incident-type field, and a weekly GPX export feeds OsmAnd for offline patrols where there is no signal. On quota, the Thunderforest outdoor tile tier provides 150,000 tile requests a month free (roughly 10,000 map views), which covers a regional trail organisation without a tile bill.

Destination teams publish maps to the public, which means attribution is not optional: every embedded map has to credit OpenStreetMap contributors, and when a cycling or outdoor tile style is used, the tile provider too. For tourism boards we rebrand the interface with the destination's name and stylesheet, hide the commercial map-provider buttons so the embed stays on-brand, and publish a read-only iframe on the existing website. A typical workflow: three communications staff jointly maintain the official 'things to do' map: the director holds the admin link, the team shares the editable link, and the public sees only the read-only view. A five-seat licence on a proprietary mapping SaaS runs about 2,500 dollars a year, while managed FacilMap carries unlimited collaborators on one map at a flat monthly cost.

Event safety planning works from an annotated site map: under the UK's Purple Guide, or NFPA life-safety codes in the US, the plan shared with staff and authorities includes mapped first-aid points, fire points, and exits. For event crews we set up custom marker types for first aid, fire point, emergency exit, stage, and generator, each with form fields, and we build saved views per function (production, security, medical, public). One honest limit: FacilMap has no built-in alerting or email, so any real-time notification has to be plumbed in externally. A typical workflow on event day: a security supervisor with the editable link drops an incident marker that every read-only holder sees at once. FacilMap's three permission tiers (admin, editable, read-only) map cleanly onto the three staff roles a production already runs.

Advocacy and civic-tech groups working with OpenStreetMap data take on its share-alike obligation: improvements to mappable data are meant to flow back upstream through an OSM editor like JOSM, not stay locked in one tool. FacilMap is for collaborative annotation, not direct OSM editing, so we configure it as the gathering layer: CyclOSM enabled by default, the OpenRouteService bicycle profile preset, and GeoJSON export set up for downstream GIS. A typical workflow: a cycling group crowdsources missing bike-parking spots on a shared map, then exports the markers and batches them into JOSM for upload to OpenStreetMap each quarter. On format, FacilMap exports a ZIP with one GPX file per line, which JOSM and OsmAnd both read directly, so the round trip needs no conversion step.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Three groups of questions below. The first covers how FacilMap works and how we configure it. The second covers moving your existing maps and domain in. The third covers billing, support, and how the platform works across every app we host.

01

Technical and configuration

Every FacilMap map has all three. The admin link can edit marker types, views, and settings and delete the map; the editable link can add and change markers and lines; the read-only link can only view. The URL is the credential, so you control access by choosing who gets which link.
Yes. The links act as passwords: if you don't share a map's URLs, no one can find it. Listing a map in FacilMap's own search is off by default and stays off unless you turn it on in the map settings.
Yes, a Socket.io API with a client library. You can read and write markers, lines, types, and views programmatically, and subscribe to live changes. It's how custom dashboards and integrations talk to a FacilMap instance.
Drop an iframe pointing at your map's URL and it works. You can embed the read-only or the editable view, and hide the routing and search panel for a cleaner embed. More advanced embedding uses the FacilMap Leaflet components.

02

Migration and onboarding

21 datacenter locations across six continents. You choose the region at provisioning. Application data sits in the region you choose; pick whichever is closest to your users or matches your data-residency preference.
Yes. Request a region migration from the dashboard and we run the move in the background. The system emails you when the migration completes; total transfer time depends on data volume but typical instances finish in a few hours. There is no extra charge for a region change.
Yes. Full data export is available at any time, in a portable format you can bring to any infrastructure.
Import them. FacilMap reads GPX, KML, OSM, and GeoJSON: drag a file onto a map or use the import tool, and your markers and routes become part of that collaborative map.
Yes. Export your My Maps map as KML from Google, then import the KML into a FacilMap map. Your placemarks and lines come across; you re-pick a base layer and styling on the FacilMap side.
Yes. If you already run FacilMap, send us a database dump and we'll restore it onto your managed instance, then point your domain at it. Your map URLs and IDs are preserved, so existing share links keep working.
Yes. Tell us the domain you want, maps.yourcompany.com, say, and we configure it, issue the certificate, and set the reverse-proxy options FacilMap needs so every share link resolves under your domain. DNS help is part of onboarding.
Always. Your maps export as GPX, KML, GeoJSON, CSV, or a ZIP of per-route GPX files, and we can hand over a full database dump. It's open-source software under your control: there's no lock-in.

03

Billing, support, and platform

€9 covers everything we do for that app: hardware in the region you choose, daily off-site backups with one-click restore, automatic security patches and version upgrades, 24/7 monitoring, SSL and firewall, and engineering support on email and the ticket section in the client portal.
