ABOUT THE SOFTWARE

What is Euro-Office

Euro-Office is a document editing server released under the AGPL. It is a fork of the ONLYOFFICE document server, maintained by a group of open-source vendors rather than a single company, and it is built to plug into a file platform instead of standing alone.

The project keeps the upstream architecture: a Node.js service layer that runs editing sessions and document conversion, a C++ core that renders and converts files, and a JavaScript SDK carrying the Office XML document model. What the fork changed is governance and licensing. The code is AGPL-3.0-only across the server, the editors and the connectors, with the shared format definitions under Apache-2.0, and the branding clauses layered on top of the upstream licence were removed.

Maintainers include Nextcloud, Proton, XWiki, OpenProject, Abilian, BTactic, Open-Xchange and Tuta, working by rough consensus rather than under a copyright assignment agreement. That has a practical consequence: there is no paid edition to be upsold into, and no contributor agreement that would let one owner relicense the project later. The fork is also young. Browser editing is stable and already shipping inside file platforms, while the desktop and mobile clients are still being completed.

FEATURES

What Euro-Office does

Euro-Office covers the four document types most offices actually use, in the browser, with several people in the same file. It reads and writes both Office XML and Open Document formats, and it exposes an editing interface that file platforms call rather than a portal of its own.

Text documents

Styles, tables of contents, footnotes, mail-merge fields and page layout in the browser. Reads and writes DOCX and ODT, plus DOC, RTF and TXT.

Spreadsheets

Formulas, pivot tables, conditional formatting, charts and named ranges, reading and writing XLSX and ODS while holding cell formatting through a round trip.

Presentations

Slide editing with masters, transitions, speaker notes and animations, reading and writing PPTX and ODP, with presenter view in the same browser tab.

PDF editing and forms

Annotate, fill and sign PDFs in the same interface, and build fillable forms that can be completed in the browser and returned as a flattened file.

Real-time co-editing

Two modes. Fast shows keystrokes as they are typed. Strict locks a paragraph until its author releases it, which is what teams redlining formal documents usually want.

Track changes and versions

Reviewer marks, threaded comments and stored prior versions, so a document can be compared or rolled back without keeping a folder of dated copies.

File platform connector

It attaches to your storage rather than holding files itself. The Nextcloud connector is maintained by the same project; other platforms attach over the same editing protocol.

Conversion service

A server-side endpoint that converts documents to PDF or between formats, callable from your own scripts for batch export and archiving.

WHAT'S ALWAYS INCLUDED

Every app. Fully managed.
Nothing extra to pay for.

Every app on DANIAN ships with the same operational baseline. You do not choose a backup add-on or a monitoring tier. Hosting, patching, backups, SSL, and support are part of the €9, and they apply to Euro-Office the same way they apply to everything else in the catalog.

Automatic updates and patches

Apps run the latest stable version. Security patches applied silently, with rollback if needed.

Daily off-site backups

Multiple daily backups in redundant off-site locations. One-click restore if anything goes wrong.

24/7 uptime monitoring

Continuous monitoring with instant alerting. We respond before you notice.

SSL, firewall, DDoS protection

Auto-renewing SSL, hardened firewall rules, DDoS mitigation on every deployment.

Performance and scaling

We monitor resource usage continuously. When your app needs more headroom, we flag it and upgrade with your explicit approval.

Dedicated engineering support

Real engineers by email and ticket. DNS, SMTP & migration help. All included in €9.

WHY MANAGED

Why teams pick managed Euro-Office

Two things move teams onto Euro-Office: per-seat office subscriptions that keep climbing, and public bodies that now require open document formats for internal work. Running the editing server answers both. It also hands you a service with several moving parts that have to stay alive.

Installing the document server is the short part. What follows is the work. The conversion service has to stay inside its memory ceiling when several people open large files at once. Cached document versions have to be moved off the disk before they fill it. Security releases have to be tracked for a codebase that inherits reported cross-site scripting and path-traversal fixes from its parent project. Each release has to be tested before it reaches the people writing in it.

The failure mode almost everyone meets first is not a crash. The editor simply refuses to open a file. Two causes account for most of it. The reverse proxy in front of the server drops the WebSocket upgrade, so the editing session never establishes. Or the token secret shared between the document server and the file platform does not match, which returns a message about the security token not being correctly formed. Both are configuration, both look like broken software, and both are why this app generates support threads rather than bug reports.

We hand over instances with those settled:
- A token secret generated per instance at more than 32 characters, injected as an environment variable so a container restart cannot revert it, and matched into the connector on your file platform.
- WebSocket upgrade and forwarded-host headers set on the proxy in front of the instance before you get the login.
- Persistent volumes mounted for document data, logs and configuration, so rebuilding the container does not take documents with it.
- Encrypted daily off-site backups, kept in a different datacenter from the running instance.

USE CASES

Three teams who run Euro-Office on DANIAN

Three shapes of team keep appearing in the file-platform migrations this app rides on. None of them wanted an office suite project. They wanted their documents to stay where they already were, editable by more than one person at a time.

12-PERSON ARCHITECTURE PRACTICE

Dropping a per-seat suite that cost more than the drafting software

They kept their existing file platform and attached Euro-Office to it, picked the region nearest their studio so large specification documents stay responsive, raised the upload ceiling for 200-page tender packs, and set the default save format to ODF so submissions match what the client authority accepts.

40-PERSON MUNICIPAL DEPARTMENT

Meeting a rule that names ODF as the working format

Decision papers are drafted by two officers in strict co-editing mode, commented by a department head, then frozen as PDF at sign-off. Version history is retained long enough to reconstruct who changed what, and the instance sits in the same region as the file platform it attaches to.

6-PERSON LEGAL PRACTICE

Redlining contracts without emailing versions around

Track changes and stored versions replaced a folder of dated copies. They run strict mode so two fee earners cannot rewrite the same clause, keep the instance in the region nearest their clients, and export a flattened PDF at execution.

COMPARISON

Four ways to run Euro-Office

The comparison worth running is not editor against editor. It is who carries the operational work, and how the bill behaves as the team grows. Per-seat suites scale with headcount. A server you run yourself scales with your time. Here is the arithmetic at three team sizes.

Path1 person5 people10 peopleWhat you carry
Microsoft 365 Business Standardabout $23.50/moabout $117.50/moabout $235/moNothing operationally. Files sit with the vendor, formats follow the vendor, and the bill tracks headcount.
Self-host on a VPS$24/mo$24/mo$24/moInstall, proxy and token configuration, memory headroom for the conversion service, backups, security releases. Budget a few hours a month, more on release weeks.
Home server~$900 once+ ~$8/mo power+ ~$8/mo powerEverything above, plus the hardware, your domestic upload bandwidth, and no redundancy the day a drive fails.
DANIAN managed Euro-Office€9/mo€9/mo€9/moNothing. Flat per instance, not per person. Concurrent editing is bounded by the size of the instance, never by a licence.

BY INDUSTRY

Euro-Office for specific industries

Document editing looks generic until a sector's record rules touch it. Retention periods, mandated formats, file sizes and who is allowed to change what all land on the same server. These four sectors put the sharpest demands on it, and each one needs a different setting changed.

Public bodies increasingly work under rules naming Open Document Format as the working format for internal documents, which turns the editor's default save behaviour from a preference into a requirement. We set ODF as the default on these instances rather than leaving the Office XML default in place, and keep version history long enough to reconstruct how a decision was drafted. The usual workflow is a decision paper written by two officers in strict co-editing mode, commented by a department head, then frozen as PDF for the record. Statutory retention for official records commonly runs ten years, which makes storage the real planning number: across a decade, the stored prior versions weigh more than the finished documents.

Education deployments are large and seasonal, and they share one shape: identity comes from the school platform, not from the editor. We attach Euro-Office to the file platform that already holds the sign-in, so accounts are never managed twice, and we size the instance against concurrent editing sessions so one class opening the same worksheet at once cannot starve the conversion service. A common workflow is a teacher distributing a template, thirty pupils editing their own copies, and the returned work exported to PDF in one batch through the conversion endpoint. Term boundaries make retention predictable: coursework kept for one academic year, then cleared, holds storage flat year over year.

Construction projects run on the ISO 19650 information-management standard, which requires every document to carry a status and revision and every superseded version to stay retrievable. Version history is the feature that satisfies that, so we retain it rather than trimming it on a schedule, and we raise the upload ceiling because tender packs and specifications arrive as very large files rather than memos. The workflow is a specification co-edited by the project architect and an engineer, issued as PDF at each revision, with the editable original kept beside it. Records for contracts executed as deeds are commonly held for twelve years, so plan for a decade of document history in storage rather than the length of the project.

Professional file-retention rules for law firms commonly run six to ten years after a matter closes, and the working question is whether the file can still show what changed and when. Track changes and stored versions answer it, so we leave version history uncapped on these instances and keep strict co-editing as the default, which locks a paragraph to one author until it is released. The workflow is a contract redlined between two fee earners, comments resolved, then exported as a flattened PDF for execution so the signed copy carries no revision marks. A ten-year window on a practice producing a few thousand documents a year is the storage figure to plan against.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Three groups of questions come up. What the software does and how we configure it, what moving to it involves, and how the platform underneath it bills, backs up and supports you. The first two are specific to this app. The third describes DANIAN.

01

Technical and configuration

Office XML fidelity is the codebase's inherited strength: DOCX, XLSX and PPTX round-trip well, tracked changes and pivot tables included. Open Document support is weaker and is a stated project priority. Macro-driven workbooks remain the usual break point.
Yes, in two modes. Fast shows keystrokes as they are typed. Strict locks a paragraph to one author until they release it. The document is written back to storage once the last editor closes it, not continuously while people type.
No. It edits documents that live on your file platform and hands them back. That is why it is deployed alongside a storage app rather than instead of one, and why sharing and permissions stay exactly where they already are.
The project maintains its own Nextcloud connector, which ships with recent Nextcloud releases. Other platforms attach over the same document-editing protocol the codebase has always used, so integrations built for its parent project generally continue to work.
A token secret mismatch between the document server and the connector on your file platform. We generate a secret of more than 32 characters per instance, inject it as an environment variable so a restart cannot revert it, and set the matching value in the connector.
The WebSocket upgrade is being dropped, so the editing session never establishes. We set the upgrade and forwarded-host headers on the proxy in front of every instance before handing it over. This is the most common self-hosting failure this particular app produces.
The conversion service is the hungry part, and its appetite tracks document size and concurrent sessions rather than the number of accounts. We size instances against concurrent editing rather than seats, and watch the conversion worker rather than overall load.
They accumulate. Stored versions and cached conversions are the usual reason a document server fills its disk quietly. We monitor growth per instance and can cap retention where no sector rule requires keeping everything.
Browser editing works on phones and tablets. Desktop clients exist and are still being completed as the fork replaces proprietary pieces inherited from upstream. For most teams the browser is the deployment surface, which is also what the connectors expose.
The parent codebase has published cross-site scripting and path-traversal advisories over the past two years, all fixed upstream. We track releases for this app and apply security releases when they land rather than waiting for a scheduled window.

02

Migration and onboarding

21 datacenter locations across six continents. You choose the region at provisioning. Application data sits in the region you choose; pick whichever is closest to your users or matches your data-residency preference.
Yes. Request a region migration from the dashboard and we run the move in the background. The system emails you when the migration completes; total transfer time depends on data volume but typical instances finish in a few hours. There is no extra charge for a region change.
Yes. Full data export is available at any time, in a portable format you can bring to any infrastructure.
Export the documents as DOCX, XLSX and PPTX and put them on your file platform. Euro-Office edits them in place. Formatting survives well. Embedded macros, vendor add-ins and vendor-specific chart types do not come across.
The file copy is the long pole, and it depends on your storage volume rather than on this app. Attaching the editor to an existing file platform and testing the connector is usually an afternoon rather than a project.
Files exported as DOCX or PDF open normally elsewhere. Differences show up in heavily designed documents: uncommon fonts, complex text wrapping around images, and chart types with no direct equivalent. Test a representative handful before moving everyone.
Yes. We give you the records to add at your registrar and check propagation with you. If you would rather we handled it end to end, we can, provided you are comfortable delegating the zone to us.

03

Billing, support and platform

€9 covers everything we do for that app: hardware in the region you choose, daily off-site backups with one-click restore, automatic security patches and version upgrades, 24/7 monitoring, SSL and firewall, and engineering support on email and the ticket section in the client portal.
