ABOUT THE SOFTWARE

What is Docmost

Docmost is a self-hosted wiki and documentation platform. It gives teams a shared, structured place to write — organised into spaces, edited in real time, searchable across every page. It is an open alternative to the proprietary documentation tools most companies outgrow on price or control.

Docmost is released under the AGPL-3.0 licence and maintained by Docmost, Inc. The current stable release is v0.90.1, published in May 2026. It runs as three components — a NestJS application, a PostgreSQL database, and a Redis instance — with a React front end and a real-time editor built on WebSockets.

The project has passed 20,000 stars on GitHub and ships its interface in more than twelve languages. Public deployments include the City of Vilnius, Bechtle, the Red Cross, and the École de technologie supérieure in Québec. The community edition covers the full editor and spaces model; an enterprise edition adds single sign-on, granular permissions, and page approval workflows.

FEATURES

What Docmost does

Docmost covers the full documentation workflow — writing, organising, finding, and sharing. Below are the capabilities that matter most when a team moves real knowledge into it. Several advanced items belong to the enterprise edition, which DANIAN can enable on request.

Real-time collaborative editor

Multiple people edit one page at once with live cursors and instant sync, in a rich-text editor with Markdown shortcuts, slash commands, tables, code blocks, and LaTeX math.

Nested spaces and pages

Organise content into unlimited spaces per team or project, nest pages to any depth, drag to reorder, and link pages across spaces with inline mentions.

Permissions and groups

Workspace and space permissions in the community edition; granular page-level view, edit, and manage rights with groups in the enterprise edition. Revoke a group in one action.

Comments, mentions, and notifications

Comment inline or at page level, mention people and pages, and notify watchers when a page changes, so reviews and updates happen in context rather than over email.

Full-text search

PostgreSQL full-text search across page content in the community edition; a Typesense driver and search inside PDF and DOCX attachments in the enterprise edition.

Page history and versioning

Every edit creates a restorable snapshot, and backlinks show every page that points at the current one — useful for citation graphs and tracing how knowledge connects.

Public sharing and import/export

Share pages or spaces publicly by URL; import from Notion, Markdown, and HTML in the community edition, and from Confluence, DOCX, and PDF in the enterprise edition.

Single sign-on, AI, and REST API

A token-authenticated REST API in the community edition; SAML, OIDC, and LDAP sign-on, SCIM provisioning, and AI chat and answers in the enterprise edition.

WHAT'S ALWAYS INCLUDED

Every app. Fully managed.
Nothing extra to pay for.

Every app on DANIAN ships with the same operational baseline. You do not choose a backup add-on or a monitoring tier. Hosting, patching, backups, SSL, and support are part of the €9, and they apply to Docmost the same way they apply to everything else in the catalog.

Automatic updates and patches

Apps run the latest stable version. Security patches applied silently, with rollback if needed.

Daily off-site backups

Multiple daily backups in redundant off-site locations. One-click restore if anything goes wrong.

24/7 uptime monitoring

Continuous monitoring with instant alerting. We respond before you notice.

SSL, firewall, DDoS protection

Auto-renewing SSL, hardened firewall rules, DDoS mitigation on every deployment.

Performance and scaling

We monitor resource usage continuously. When your app needs more headroom, we flag it and upgrade with your explicit approval.

Dedicated engineering support

Real engineers by email and ticket. DNS, SMTP & migration help. All included in €9.

WHY MANAGED

Why teams pick managed Docmost

In September 2025, Atlassian set Confluence Data Center to reach end of life in March 2029, and stopped selling it to new customers in March 2026. Teams that chose self-hosted Confluence to keep control of their data are now looking for a replacement they can still run themselves.

Running Docmost well is more than starting a container. The real-time editor depends on a correctly configured reverse proxy, attachments belong in object storage rather than on the app volume, and the database and storage have to be backed up together to be coherent. None of that is hard once — it is the keeping-it-right every week that costs time.

The most common production failure is quiet. Docmost's collaborative editor talks to the server over a WebSocket on the /collab path. If the reverse proxy does not forward the upgrade headers, the editor drops into read-only mode — pages load, but edits never sync, and a basic uptime check still reports the site as healthy. It is the kind of fault that surfaces as a confused support ticket three days later.

We configure the parts that vanilla installs leave to you. We route /collab over WebSockets with the upgrade headers and an extended read timeout, pin the Postgres and Redis versions, and relay outbound mail through a hardened gateway with SPF and DKIM aligned so workspace invites actually arrive.

USE CASES

Three teams who run Docmost on DANIAN

Docmost suits teams that have outgrown a per-seat tool or a homegrown wiki. Three composite examples show how that plays out — the region chosen, the migration path, the sign-on setup, and the daily work the team moved into it.

28-PERSON PLATFORM TEAM

Replacing Confluence Data Center before the 2029 cutoff

A fintech SRE team migrated off self-hosted Confluence using the Docmost importer, keeping page hierarchy and attachments intact. They run in Germany, sign in through Entra ID SAML with MFA, and keep runbooks, ADRs, and on-call playbooks in nested spaces with quarterly page verification.

12-CONSULTANT FIRM

Moving client knowledge off a per-seat plan

A consulting firm left a $20-per-seat plan for a flat fee. They run in Canada, sign in with Google OIDC, and keep one space per client engagement. Page-level permissions mean partners see everything and consultants see only their assignments; deliverables get a sign-off before clients see them.

45-PERSON RESEARCH LAB

Retiring an aging homegrown wiki

A university lab moved its handbook and protocols out of an old MediaWiki via Markdown import. They run in Sweden, sign in against the university identity provider, and publish a public methods sub-tree the search engines can index — with LaTeX math and Excalidraw diagrams throughout.

COMPARISON

Four ways to run Docmost

The same Docmost can run four ways. The difference is not the software — it is who carries the operations and how the bill scales. Below is what each path costs at one, five, and ten people, and what it asks of your time.

Approach1 person5 people10 peopleYour ongoing work
Confluence Premium (proprietary SaaS)$12.30/mo$61.50/mo$123/moVendor-run; the per-seat bill rises with every hire, and annual billing carries a 10-user minimum.
Self-host on a VPS~$44/mo + time~$44/mo + time~$44/mo + timeA $24 production-class VPS plus backup and monitoring; 1–2 hours a month patching, plus database tuning past 25 users.
Home server€650–1,500 once+ power+ powerBusiness-grade hardware, roughly €17–32/mo in electricity, a static-IP business line, and your own on-call.
DANIAN managed Docmost€9/mo€9/mo€9/moNone — we patch, back up, monitor, and stay on call.

Confluence Premium shown at monthly list pricing (atlassian.com), June 2026; annual billing is about $10.44 per user with a 10-user minimum. Notion Business is $20 per seat per month. The VPS figure is a 2 vCPU / 4 GB production-class server plus object-storage backup and monitoring. DANIAN is a flat €9 per app per month at the base tier, regardless of how many people use the instance.

BY INDUSTRY

Docmost for specific industries

Different teams put different demands on a documentation tool. A research lab needs public, citable pages; a clinical team needs versioned, signed-off policies. Here is how Docmost on DANIAN fits four of the fields that depend most on getting documentation right.

Engineering teams live and die by runbooks and Architecture Decision Records — the practice of recording why a system was built the way it was, not just how. We enable the enterprise page-verification workflow so every runbook carries a named owner and a verified-at date, and we enforce single sign-on with SCIM so a deactivated engineer instantly loses access. A typical flow: an on-call engineer opens a post-incident review from a template in the Incidents space, captures the failure sequence in a Mermaid diagram, and the SRE lead marks the page verified after the post-mortem. The economics are plain — a 28-engineer team on Confluence Premium pays about $3,500 a year; on DANIAN that is €108, and it stays €108 as the team grows.

Consulting work runs on controlled documents — every standard procedure and deliverable needs an owner, a review date, and version history. We set up one space per client engagement with page-level permissions, so partners see the whole portfolio while consultants see only their assignments. Public sharing is disabled at the workspace level, with per-page exceptions for client-facing deliverables, and invite emails go out through the firm's own domain. A new engagement spins up from a template — scope, kickoff, weekly status, deliverables — with the client added as a view-only guest to the deliverables sub-tree, and a sign-off before anything is shared. A 12-consultant firm leaving a $20-per-seat plan saves roughly $2,770 a year, and onboarding a new consultant costs nothing extra.

Research documentation aims at the FAIR principles — findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable knowledge. We enable public sharing at the space level so syllabus and methods pages are linkable and indexable, sign in against the university identity provider over OIDC, and turn on LaTeX math, Mermaid, and Excalidraw for protocols and diagrams. A principal investigator keeps a lab-handbook space with onboarding pages for new students, a protocols sub-tree with full page history, and a public methods sub-tree the search engines can crawl. Costs matter on grant cycles: a group scaling from ten to fifty members over five years would pay more than $10,000 on a per-seat plan, versus €540 on DANIAN — with no renegotiation each time a new cohort arrives.

Clinical teams manage controlled documents — policies and standard procedures that are versioned, owner-attributed, and reviewed on a schedule. We enable the page-verification and approval workflow so every clinical procedure has a named verifier and a verified-at timestamp, use page-level permissions so draft policies stay hidden from floor staff until approved, and can run the instance air-gapped for sites that stay off the public internet. A quality lead drafts a revised procedure in a Draft space; the medical director reviews and marks it verified; the live version surfaces and ward staff get a page-update notification. Mid-size groups often manage 200 to 500 policies on quarterly review — hundreds of review actions a year that need a real workflow, not just shared editing. At 60 admin seats, that is €108 a year here versus far more elsewhere.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Three groups of questions. The first covers configuring Docmost in production, the second covers moving in and getting started, and the third covers billing, support, and how the platform works.

Three groups: technical setup, migration, and how DANIAN works as a service.

01

Technical and configuration

Docmost's real-time editor talks to the server over a WebSocket on the /collab path. If the proxy does not forward the Upgrade and Connection upgrade headers, the editor falls back to read-only — pages load, but edits never sync. We forward those headers on /collab with an extended read timeout, so live editing works from the first login.
Not cleanly. Docmost strips the sub-path from the application URL when it generates page HTML, so a sub-path install breaks links and assets. The supported pattern is a dedicated subdomain. On DANIAN your instance gets its own subdomain by default, and you can map a custom domain on top of it.
Invites are the only way to add users in the community edition, and they fail silently when SMTP is misconfigured — a missing variable, the wrong port or TLS mode, or a rejected self-signed certificate. We relay outbound mail through a hardened gateway with SPF and DKIM aligned on the from-domain, so invites and notifications land in inboxes instead of spam.
Yes. PostgreSQL stores all content and is the only supported database — there is no MySQL, MariaDB, or SQLite option. Redis runs the queues, pub/sub, and real-time coordination behind the editor. Both are required. On DANIAN both run as managed components, sized and tuned for your instance, so you never provision or patch them yourself.
Yes. Docmost has a REST API authenticated with a personal bearer token. All endpoints use POST and responses are cursor-paginated. The core API is part of the community edition; some endpoints require an enterprise licence. We expose the API normally on your managed instance so you can script imports, exports, and integrations.
There is no native iOS or Android app. Docmost ships a mobile-friendly web interface that works in a phone browser, and full installable-app support is still on the roadmap. Your DANIAN instance is reachable from any browser, so phones and tablets work today through the responsive web UI.
Searching inside attachment contents is an enterprise-edition feature, paired with the Typesense search driver. The community edition searches page content using PostgreSQL full-text search, which covers everything written in pages but not the text inside uploaded files. We can enable the enterprise search tier on request if attachment search matters to your team.

02

Migration and onboarding

21 datacenter locations across six continents. You choose the region at provisioning. Application data sits in the region you choose; pick whichever is closest to your users or matches your data-residency preference.
Yes. Request a region migration from the dashboard and we run the move in the background. The system emails you when the migration completes; total transfer time depends on data volume but typical instances finish in a few hours. There is no extra charge for a region change.
Yes. Full data export is available at any time, in a portable format you can bring to any infrastructure.
Yes. The Confluence importer is an enterprise-edition feature that preserves page hierarchy, formatting, and attachments, with anchor links carried across as well. It is the cleanest path for teams leaving self-hosted Confluence. We enable the enterprise edition and help you run the import so your space tree lands intact rather than as a flat dump.
Yes, and Notion import is available in the community edition. You export your Notion workspace as a ZIP and import it directly into Docmost, which rebuilds the pages and structure. We can walk you through the export-and-import on your managed instance so the result keeps your hierarchy rather than a folder of loose files.
The community edition includes the real-time editor, spaces, groups, page history, public sharing, full-text page search, diagrams, the REST API, and Notion and Markdown import. The enterprise edition adds single sign-on, SCIM, granular page permissions, AI features, page verification workflows, attachment search, the Confluence importer, and priority support. DANIAN runs either, and can switch you up without data loss.
Yes. Docmost is built so you can begin on the community edition and move to the enterprise edition at any time without losing your data. On DANIAN that switch is an instance change we handle for you — your spaces, pages, history, and attachments stay exactly where they are, and the new features simply appear.
Yes. Public sharing is available in the community edition, per page or per space, so you can publish a help center or methods library that search engines can index. Disabling public sharing across the whole workspace, and removing Docmost branding from public pages, are enterprise features we can turn on if you need that control.
Docmost exports per space to Markdown or HTML, with attachments bundled in a ZIP, so you can take a copy whenever you want. For a full machine backup you need the database dump and the attachment storage together. On DANIAN we already run that coherent daily backup for you, and you can still export your own copy anytime.

03

Billing, support, and platform
