ABOUT THE SOFTWARE

What is DbGate

DbGate is an open-source database manager that runs either as a desktop application or as a single web container. It reads and writes relational and document databases through one interface, so a team can standardise on one client rather than several.

The project is published under the GPL-3.0 licence, having moved from a permissive licence when its commercial edition launched. It is led by its original author, Jan Procházka, with commercial development by Sprinx Systems. The public repository has more than 7,000 GitHub stars and more than 400 forks, which puts it in the second tier of database tooling by visibility: smaller than the desktop incumbents, considerably more active than most browser-based clients.

Engine support is plugin-based and unusually wide for a single client: Postgres, MySQL, MariaDB, SQL Server, Oracle, SQLite, DuckDB, MongoDB, Redis, Cassandra, ClickHouse, CockroachDB and Firebird among others. The web build ships as one container with all state under a single storage directory. Official guidance puts a small deployment at one core and one gigabyte of memory, and about ten concurrent users at two cores and four gigabytes.

FEATURES

What DbGate does

DbGate covers the day-to-day work of reading, editing and moving data: a query console, a spreadsheet-style data grid, structure diagrams and file-based export and import, across relational and document engines in the same window.

SQL query console

Run statements against any connected engine with query history and auto-complete drawn from the live schema.

Spreadsheet-style data grid

Filter, sort and edit rows inline, with the generated change script shown for review before anything is committed.

Structure diagrams

Render tables and their foreign-key relationships as a diagram, which is often the fastest way into an unfamiliar schema.

Master-detail and perspectives

Follow foreign keys and nested documents from a parent row into related records without writing a join by hand.

Export and import

Move table and query results to and from CSV, JSON, NDJSON and Excel-readable files for reporting handoffs.

Document and key-value browsing

Browse MongoDB collections and Redis keys in the same interface used for relational tables, with the same filters.

File-based engines

Open SQLite and DuckDB files directly, which suits analytics extracts that never justified a database server.

Multi-connection workspace

Keep every environment side by side in one workspace, with connections pinned by us so nobody types a production host by mistake.

WHAT'S ALWAYS INCLUDED

Every app. Fully managed.
Nothing extra to pay for.

Every app on DANIAN ships with the same operational baseline. You do not choose a backup add-on or a monitoring tier. Hosting, patching, backups, SSL, and support are part of the €9, and they apply to DbGate the same way they apply to everything else in the catalog.

Automatic updates and patches

Apps run the latest stable version. Security patches applied silently, with rollback if needed.

Daily off-site backups

Multiple daily backups in redundant off-site locations. One-click restore if anything goes wrong.

24/7 uptime monitoring

Continuous monitoring with instant alerting. We respond before you notice.

SSL, firewall, DDoS protection

Auto-renewing SSL, hardened firewall rules, DDoS mitigation on every deployment.

Performance and scaling

We monitor resource usage continuously. When your app needs more headroom, we flag it and upgrade with your explicit approval.

Dedicated engineering support

Real engineers by email and ticket. DNS, SMTP & migration help. All included in €9.

WHY MANAGED

Why teams pick managed DbGate

Microsoft has retired Azure Data Studio, which no longer receives updates or security fixes, and teams that relied on it are picking a replacement. DbGate is a common landing point, but the browser build is the part people underestimate when they run it themselves.

Installing DbGate is a one-line container run. What that line does not do is make the instance safe to leave running. The web build starts with no authentication unless the LOGIN and PASSWORD environment variables are set, so an instance published to a public address without them is an open database console with saved credentials in it. Upstream has also shipped high-severity fixes for file-access flaws in the web edition, which means an unattended container drifts from patched to exposed without anyone touching it.

The failure that actually costs people an afternoon is quieter. DbGate keeps saved connections, saved queries, archives and query history in one storage directory inside the container. Recreate that container without mounting the directory as a volume, a routine image bump, a host migration, a docker compose down, and every connection the team had configured is gone. The upstream issue tracker has been carrying this question since 2022, and it is still the first thing that goes wrong on a self-managed instance.

There is no master-key environment variable to lose and no export button that saves you: the volume either exists or the work is repeated. On DANIAN the volume is part of the provisioning template rather than something a customer remembers to add.

USE CASES

Three teams who run DbGate on DANIAN

Three shapes of team account for most DbGate instances we provision: agencies holding many client databases, analysts who need read access without a laptop licence, and small platform teams who want scripting switched off.

SIX-PERSON WEB AGENCY

One instance per client, connections pinned by us

Around twenty client databases across Postgres, MySQL and SQLite. Rather than one shared console, they run a separate instance per client with the connection list fixed at provisioning, so a developer working on one client cannot see another client's data at all.

FOUR-PERSON ANALYTICS TEAM

Read-only replica access instead of four desktop licences

An online retailer's analysts pull weekly figures from a MySQL reporting replica. The connection is marked read-only, so a mistyped statement cannot write to the replica, and the weekly export goes out as CSV to the finance spreadsheet.

THREE-PERSON PLATFORM TEAM

Scripting off, single database pinned, nightly restore point

A clinical data company keeps one instance pinned to a single database with shell scripting and shell connections disabled. Every change to subject data is made through the grid, where the generated statement is reviewed before it is committed.

COMPARISON

Four ways to run DbGate

The cost of a database client is a per-seat question everywhere except here. The comparison below prices the same job, giving a small team a working client for several databases, at one, five and ten people.

Path1 person5 people10 peopleWhat you take on
Desktop IDE licences (DataGrip)$259 / user / yr$1,295 / yr$2,590 / yrPer-seat and per-device. Installed on each laptop, so connection settings and credentials live on individual machines rather than in one managed place.
Self-host on your own VPS$24/mo server$24/mo server$24/mo serverLicence-free, but you own the volume mapping, the patch cadence, the proxy websocket configuration and the certificate renewal. Budget a few hours a month.
Home server~$180 one-time+ electricity+ electricityAn N100-class mini PC draws roughly ten watts, about €20 a year to run. No off-site copy, no second site, and remote access is your problem to solve.
DANIAN managed DbGate€9/month€9/month€9/monthFlat, regardless of how many people use the instance. Persistent volume, nightly off-site backup, patched image, certificate and proxy configured, human support included.

The web-based comparators price differently again: DbGate's own Team Premium edition costs $150 per user per year, so a ten-person team pays $1,500. The point of the table is not that licences are expensive, it is that seat count stops being a budgeting variable.

BY INDUSTRY

DbGate for specific industries

A database client sits closer to regulated data than most software a small team runs. The four settings below share one requirement: access has to be narrow, attributable to a named person, and recoverable afterwards.

Card-scheme security rules require that database credentials are not shared between people and that every action against cardholder systems is attributable to a named individual. Shared logins are permitted only by exception. We provision each named user with their own login rather than one team account, and we mark reporting connections read-only so an analyst cannot write to a live orders table. Session token lifetime is set to eight hours, so a browser session cannot outlive a working day and be picked up the next morning on an unlocked laptop. A typical workflow: a support agent filters the orders grid by customer email, corrects a shipping address, and reviews the generated update statement before committing it.

Firms dealing in financial instruments must keep records of orders and transactions for at least five years, and be able to reproduce them on request. That makes uncontrolled write access to the reporting database an operational risk rather than a convenience. We pin the reporting connection as read-only and put the production writer connection behind a password prompt, so the credential is entered by the person using it rather than stored in the instance. Analysts export a filtered trade table to CSV for the quarterly return; the same instance holds the archived query used to produce it, so the figure can be reproduced later.

Electronic records rules under 21 CFR Part 11 require that changes to a record are attributable and recoverable, and trial master file records must be retained for at least twenty-five years under the clinical trials regulation. We disable shell scripting and shell connections on these instances, pin the instance to a single database, and keep the storage directory in the nightly off-site backup set so saved queries and archives survive a host failure. A data manager reviews the subject enrolment table in the grid, checks the generated statement before committing, and exports the cleaned extract for the statistician.

The operational standard here is separation: a developer working on one client's system should have no path to another's, and access should end when the engagement does. We run one instance per client with the connection list fixed at provisioning through the connection environment variables, so the console cannot be pointed at a host that was not agreed. An agency holding twenty client databases across three engines ends up with twenty small instances at a flat €9 each rather than one shared console holding every credential in the business. Closing an engagement means deleting one instance.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The questions below come from the upstream issue tracker, from the project's own documentation, and from what customers ask us during a trial. They are grouped into configuration, moving in, and how the platform itself works.

01

Technical and configuration

Yes. The DbGate web build has no authentication unless the LOGIN and PASSWORD environment variables are set, which is why an exposed self-managed instance is an open console. We set both at provisioning, so an instance never leaves us unauthenticated.
Nothing. DbGate keeps connections, saved queries, archives and history in one storage directory, and we mount that directory on a persistent volume. Recreating the container without that volume is the single most common way self-managed users lose their entire setup.
Postgres, MySQL, MariaDB, SQL Server, Oracle, SQLite, DuckDB, MongoDB, Redis, Cassandra, ClickHouse, CockroachDB and Firebird are supported through the plugin system, with more in the upstream list. Connections are made from the instance outward, so any reachable host works.
We leave shell connections and shell scripting switched off unless you ask for them. That keeps the instance to reading and writing data through the grid and the query console, which is what most teams want when the console is shared.
Yes. DbGate uses a websocket connection for live query results, and a proxy that drops the upgrade headers produces a client that loads but never returns data. We configure the upgrade path as part of provisioning rather than leaving it as a support ticket.
No, and this is an upstream limitation rather than a platform one. The storage directory is not shared between containers, so a second replica would not see the first one's connections. We scale a single instance vertically onto a larger host instead.
Yes, and we would rather say so. The visual query designer, charts, the assistant, structure compare-and-deploy and identity-provider logins belong to the upstream commercial editions. What we host is the open build: query console, data grid, diagrams, export and import.

02

Migration and onboarding

21 datacenter locations across six continents. You choose the region at provisioning. Application data sits in the region you choose; pick whichever is closest to your users or matches your data-residency preference.
Yes. Request a region migration from the dashboard and we run the move in the background. The system emails you when the migration completes; total transfer time depends on data volume but typical instances finish in a few hours. There is no extra charge for a region change.
Yes. Full data export is available at any time, in a portable format you can bring to any infrastructure.
The client stops living on individual laptops. Connections are defined once on the instance instead of separately on each machine, which removes the situation where one person's copy of a connection string points at the wrong host.
Saved queries carry over as text, and connection details carry over as values you re-enter once. What does not carry over is any tool-specific project format. Most teams treat the move as a chance to prune connections nobody has opened in a year.
Yes, and that is the normal case. The instance connects outward to whatever hosts you point it at, including a database on another provider or one reachable through an SSH tunnel into a private network.
Yes. You can run on a subdomain we provide or on your own domain. We give you the DNS records to add, and once they resolve the certificate is issued and renewed automatically without further work on your side.

03

Billing, support, and platform

€9 covers everything we do for that app: hardware in the region you choose, daily off-site backups with one-click restore, automatic security patches and version upgrades, 24/7 monitoring, SSL and firewall, and engineering support on email and the ticket section in the client portal.
