ABOUT THE SOFTWARE

What is Dawarich

Dawarich is an open-source web app that records where you go and shows it on a private map. It is built to replace Google Maps Timeline, keeping the familiar map, trips, and place history while storing the data in a database you control rather than a Google account.

Dawarich is released under the AGPL licence and maintained by Evgenii Burmakin, with an active community and over 9,000 stars on GitHub by mid-2026. It is a Ruby on Rails 8 application backed by PostgreSQL with the PostGIS spatial extension, a Redis queue, and a Sidekiq worker that processes imports and statistics in the background. The project ships new releases most months and is candid that it moves fast, with the maintainer advising people to read release notes before every update.

The app accepts data from Google Takeout, on-device Timeline exports, OwnTracks, Overland, GPX, GeoJSON, and more, and it has official iOS and Android apps for live tracking. Once your data is in, Dawarich draws routes and heatmaps, detects trips and visits, and counts the countries and cities you have been to — useful for travel records and for tax-residency day-counting. Your history exports back out as GPX, GeoJSON, or a full JSON file at any time.

FEATURES

What Dawarich does

Dawarich covers what most people used Google Timeline for and a bit more: a map of everywhere you have been, automatic trips and visits, travel statistics, and clean import and export. These are the app's own capabilities; the hosting and operations around them are DANIAN's.

Interactive movement map

A WebGL map of your points and routes, with heatmap, fog of war, and a scratch map that fills in as you travel.

Trips and visits

Dawarich detects stays and journeys from your points, so a trip becomes a route with distance, time, and notes you can keep.

Travel statistics

Countries and cities visited, distance covered, and time per country — by month or year, useful for travel logs and tax residency.

Wide import support

Google Semantic Location History, Records.json, OwnTracks, Overland, GPX, GeoJSON, KML, and CSV all load into one timeline.

Live tracking apps

Official iOS and Android apps record in the background; OwnTracks, GPSLogger, and Home Assistant work as sources too.

Family location sharing

Share your live position with chosen people, opt-in per member, with each person's own privacy controls.

Photo timeline

Connect Immich or Photoprism to place your photos on the map by the coordinates and time they were taken.

Open export and API

Export everything as GPX, GeoJSON, or JSON, and reach your data through a REST API and OwnTracks-compatible endpoints.

WHAT'S ALWAYS INCLUDED

Every app. Fully managed.
Nothing extra to pay for.

Every app on DANIAN ships with the same operational baseline. You do not choose a backup add-on or a monitoring tier. Hosting, patching, backups, SSL, and support are part of the €9, and they apply to Dawarich the same way they apply to everything else in the catalog.

Automatic updates and patches

Apps run the latest stable version. Security patches applied silently, with rollback if needed.

Daily off-site backups

Multiple daily backups in redundant off-site locations. One-click restore if anything goes wrong.

24/7 uptime monitoring

Continuous monitoring with instant alerting. We respond before you notice.

SSL, firewall, DDoS protection

Auto-renewing SSL, hardened firewall rules, DDoS mitigation on every deployment.

Performance and scaling

We monitor resource usage continuously. When your app needs more headroom, we flag it and upgrade with your explicit approval.

Dedicated engineering support

Real engineers by email and ticket. DNS, SMTP & migration help. All included in €9.

WHY MANAGED

Why teams pick managed Dawarich

In 2024 Google moved Maps Timeline off the cloud and onto your phone, set old history to auto-delete, and in March 2025 acknowledged a technical fault that deleted some people's Timeline for good. People who wanted their own copy started self-hosting. Most then met the upkeep.

Running Dawarich is not one container you start and forget. It is four services that have to agree: the Rails app, the Sidekiq worker, Redis, and a PostgreSQL database that must have the PostGIS extension installed. PostGIS became a hard requirement in an early release with no warning, and instances built on a plain Postgres simply failed to start until their owners worked out why. On top of that, Dawarich needs an external geocoder to turn raw coordinates into city and country names — the free public option is rate-limited and will stall a large import.

The work does not stop after setup. Releases land often and sometimes break things, so updates mean reading release notes and testing before you upgrade, not running an overnight script. A major step like the Postgres 14-to-17 move is a dump-and-restore you do by hand. Backups are on you, and the project's own maintainer admits to just hitting export now and then. None of this is exotic, but it adds up to the kind of Saturday most people host Dawarich to avoid.

USE CASES

Three teams who run Dawarich on DANIAN

Dawarich fits anyone who wants their own movement history rather than Google's copy of it. The pattern repeats across very different users: pick a region, decide who can see the data, import the past, and connect a tracking app. Three examples.

5-PERSON INVESTIGATIVE NEWSROOM

Keeping field movements off a subpoenable cloud account

Runs one instance in a region of their choosing, with OIDC single sign-on and public sharing switched off. Reporters track field days on the phone app and export GPX to verify where a story was reported.

TWO-PERSON NOMAD HOUSEHOLD

One shared map of 16 countries, without handing it to Google

Picks a region near their current base and turns on family sharing between the two of them. Immich connects their photos to the map, and a years-deep Google export was imported on day one.

CROSS-BORDER CONTRACTOR

Counting days per country for tax residency

Uses Dawarich's per-country day counts against the 183-day rule. Daily off-site backups protect a multi-year record, and a GeoJSON export goes to the accountant at year end.

COMPARISON

Four ways to run Dawarich

Dawarich replaces a free Google product, so the real question is not price but control. Google Timeline costs nothing and can delete your history; the other paths give you ownership at different amounts of effort. Here is how the four compare on what actually matters.

BY INDUSTRY

Dawarich for specific industries

A private location history means different things to different fields. A reporter needs records no one can pull from a cloud account; a researcher needs data that lasts; a cross-border worker needs day counts that hold up. Four fields where Dawarich on DANIAN earns its place.

Reporters who log field movements need records that no third party can subpoena from a cloud account. Source protection rests on that control. On DANIAN you pick a single region for the instance, we disable public sharing by default, and we put OIDC single sign-on in front of the login. A reporter records roughly 800 to 2,000 GPS points on an active day; those points stay in a PostGIS database only the newsroom can read, and exports come out as GPX or GeoJSON for verification against published claims.

Ecology and social-science fieldwork increasingly follows FAIR data principles, where location records must be findable, accessible and reusable years later. Dawarich stores every point in Postgres you control, so a dataset outlives a phone or a funded project. We run a private Photon geocoder per region so site visits resolve to place names without a rate-limited public endpoint, and researchers export GeoJSON straight into QGIS or ArcGIS. A season of daily transects can hold tens of thousands of points, all queryable by date range.

Day-counting for tax residency turns on thresholds such as the 183-day rule, and a contemporaneous record carries more weight than a reconstruction. Dawarich shows days and time spent in each country directly. On DANIAN we keep daily off-site backups so a multi-year record cannot vanish the way Google deleted Timeline data in March 2025, and the data sits in the region you choose. A cross-border worker exports a per-country CSV or GeoJSON for an accountant at year end.

Guides operating in remote terrain work under a duty of care that expects route records and last-known positions. Dawarich logs tracks from the phone and supports opt-in family sharing so a base can see a guide's live position. We enable that sharing per member, not account-wide, and back the database up daily. A multi-day trek can record 5,000-plus points; routes export as GPX for incident review or for handing a client the map of where they actually went.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Three groups of questions: the technical detail of running Dawarich, how you move your history over from Google and get set up, and how billing, support, and the platform work. If something is not here, email or chat and a human answers.

Three groups: technical setup, migration, and how DANIAN works as a service.

01

Technical and configuration

Dawarich is a Ruby on Rails application. It needs four pieces: the Rails web app, a Sidekiq worker for background jobs, PostgreSQL with the PostGIS extension, and Redis. DANIAN runs all four as managed containers so you never assemble the stack yourself.
Yes. There are official Dawarich apps for iOS and Android that record your location in the background and send it to your instance. Dawarich also accepts data from OwnTracks, Overland, GPSLogger, and Home Assistant, so you can keep an app you already use.
Imports cover Google Semantic Location History, Records.json, on-device Timeline exports, OwnTracks, GPX, GeoJSON, KML, CSV, and photo metadata from Immich or Photoprism. Exports come out as GPX, GeoJSON, or a full account JSON. Your data is never trapped in a format you cannot read.
Dawarich is open source under the AGPL licence, with over 9,000 stars on GitHub and releases most months through 2026. Active development means useful new features and occasional breaking changes. We track each release so the speed of the project does not become your maintenance problem.

02

Migration and onboarding

Yes. Your data is exported as a full backup and the instance is rebuilt in the new region. The move is handled by us, agreed in advance, and your maps and history come over unchanged.
Yes. Point a subdomain such as timeline.yourdomain.com at the instance and the SSL certificate is issued automatically. We can make the DNS change for you if you prefer.
You export everything as GPX, GeoJSON, or JSON at any time, then cancel from the dashboard. No fee, no lock-in.
There are two paths. If your account still has cloud history, use Google Takeout and select Location History. If Google has already moved your Timeline on-device, export it from the phone: on Android, Settings, Location, Location services, Timeline, Export timeline data; on iPhone, the Google Maps app under Your Timeline. You end up with a JSON file.
In Dawarich you open Imports, start a new import, choose the source that matches your file, and upload. For very large Records.json files you can run the server-side import task. Either way the points are processed in the background and appear on your map once geocoding finishes.
A single month of Semantic Location History loads in minutes. A multi-year Records.json can take a few hours, mostly bound by reverse geocoding.
Coordinates, timestamps, and Google's suggested addresses transfer, along with transport hints in Semantic Location History. What does not map cleanly is years of overlapping data from several Google-signed-in devices at once, which can show as jumps until you tidy it. Keep your original Google export as a backup after importing.
Yes. Tell us the subdomain you want, such as timeline.yourdomain.com, and we point it at your instance and issue the SSL certificate. If you would rather we make the DNS change directly, reply to support and an engineer does it. You do not edit reverse-proxy config.

03

Billing, support, and platform

€9 covers everything we do for that app: hardware in the region you choose, daily off-site backups with one-click restore, automatic security patches and version upgrades, 24/7 monitoring, SSL and firewall, and engineering support on email and the ticket section in the client portal. There are no setup fees or hidden line items. For more info see our Pricing page.
If you decide to continue, we charge €9/app/month from day 8. If you don't, the trial ends and you can export your data. No card is required for the trial, and we never auto-charge you without explicit consent.
No. The €9/month is flat regardless of how many users log into your app. Add 5 users or 50; the price doesn't change.
24/7 email and ticket support, both staffed by engineers who run the systems. We handle DNS configuration, SMTP setup, app integrations, performance tuning, troubleshooting, and migration help. Response time is typically under an hour. There is no tier system — every customer gets the same support.
Yes. Cancel from the dashboard. We don't charge a cancellation fee, we don't lock data, and we will export your data to you on request before deletion. data to you on request before deletion.
Every customer instance is backed up daily to a separate region from the primary. We test restores. You can request a restore at any backup point within the retention window — usually 7 days for daily backups.
Your application data sits in the region you choose at provisioning — 21 datacenter locations across six continents. Account-level data (billing, account email, support ticket history) is processed centrally. Application data region is picked by you, per app.
