What is Apache Superset

Apache Superset is an open-source data exploration and visualization platform — a SQL IDE, a drag-and-drop chart builder, interactive dashboards, scheduled email and Slack reports, and connectors for 40+ databases. Originated at Airbnb in 2015. Became an Apache top-level project in January 2021. Currently at version 6.0.0, released December 2025.

The project is licensed under Apache 2.0 and maintained by the Apache Software Foundation, with active commit volume from over 700 contributors and roughly 72.8k GitHub stars as of May 2026. WHY MANAGED

Why teams pick managed Apache Superset

In August 2025, Salesforce announced a 6% list-price increase across Tableau and reportedly 9–33% on legacy on-prem subscription licenses — the first major hike since 2018. Renewals starting in 2026 are pushing data teams to evaluate Apache Superset. Self-hosting it is straightforward until the Alerts & Reports feature ships blank emails because the worker has no headless browser.

Running Apache Superset in production is not docker compose up. The official compose file uses SQLite as the metadata database, which the Superset documentation itself flags as unsuitable for production because SQLite has limited concurrency support and lives on the local filesystem. Async queries via Celery require Redis as both broker and results backend, plus a worker container, plus a beat scheduler — none of which the default image wires together. Long-running SQL queries silently fail when Gunicorn workers hit their default timeout.

The Alerts & Reports feature — the reason most teams switch to Superset over a notebook — does not work out of the box. The worker container needs Playwright with Chromium installed (since version 4.1.x; Selenium with geckodriver before that). Without it, every scheduled report fails with Failed to take a screenshot errors logged into a Celery worker your team probably isn't watching. The Apache Superset GitHub issue tracker has standing threads about this failure mode (issues #34774, #36457, #33654, #24948) going back years. The ARM64 driver gap, the SSO redirect breaking screenshots, the SECRET_KEY rotation invalidating stored database credentials — these are not edge cases. They are the operational tail every self-hoster eventually meets.

What happens to my dashboards when Superset upgrades to a new major version?

Superset's Alembic migrations run automatically on container start. We hold major-version upgrades (e.g. 5.x → 6.x) until we've verified the migration on a clone of your instance — typically within two weeks of release. Dashboards, datasets, and saved queries survive intact. The 6.0 release covered breaking changes in THEME_OVERRIDES and ENVIRONMENT_TAG_CONFIG; we adjusted those configs for affected instances during the rollout.

How do you handle DNS and the custom domain during setup?

We can activate your app on your own custom domain/subdomain. Examples: mydomain.com, anyword.mydomain.com.

Which regions can I deploy in?

Can I move regions later?

Yes. Request a region migration from the dashboard and we run the move in the background. The system emails you when the migration completes; total transfer time depends on data volume but typical instances finish in a few hours. There is no extra charge for a region change.

Can I leave and take my data with me?

Yes. Full data export is available at any time, in a portable format you can bring to any infrastructure.

How do I import dashboards from another Superset instance?

Use Superset's YAML export/import feature with the VERSIONED_EXPORT feature flag enabled. Export your dashboards, datasets, and saved queries from the source instance, then upload the ZIP to your DANIAN instance.

What happens after the 7-day trial?

If you decide to continue, we charge €9/app/month from day 8. If you don't, the trial ends and you can export your data. No card is required for the trial, and we never auto-charge you without explicit consent.

Are there per-user fees?

No. The €9/month is flat regardless of how many users log into your app. Add 5 users or 50; the price doesn't change.

What is included in support?

What's the SLA?

99.9% uptime SLA on every app, every tenant. Service credits are documented at danian.co/service-level-agreement. The status page is located at status.danian.co.

How does scaling work?

When your tenant approaches the resource ceiling — the base tier holds 1 vCPU/RAM, 30 GB storage — we notify you. Resource upgrades happen with your explicit consent; we will not upgrade your tenant or charge you without it.

What happens if my card fails?

We wait. We don't suspend the app or delete your data on the first failed charge. We email you, you fix the card on file, and we continue.

What about taxes and invoicing?

Invoices can be downloaded from the billing dashboard in PDF the day each charge succeeds. EU VAT is added where applicable and the VAT-reverse-charge regime applies for VAT-registered businesses with a valid number.

Do I get terminal access to my instance?

Yes. Every instance comes with a web-based terminal and a file manager in your DANIAN management dashboard. Useful for managing your data and customizations.

What if I outgrow €9 or the per-app resources?

Resources scale with your usage. If your app needs more vCPU, RAM, or storage, we add it — and we ask first before any change to your plan. €9 is the floor; resource-heavy workloads may price higher, but you'll always know in advance.

Is there a Partner or Affiliate program?

Yes. We have both a Partner program and an Affiliate program available. Anybody can sign up.

Is there a contract or minimum commitment?

No contract. No minimum commitment. Cancel anytime from the dashboard with one click. The 7-day free trial requires no credit card. After the trial converts to paid, you can still cancel at any month without notice or penalty.
