ABOUT THE SOFTWARE

What is Apache Superset

Apache Superset is an open-source data exploration and visualization platform — a SQL IDE, a drag-and-drop chart builder, interactive dashboards, scheduled email and Slack reports, and connectors for 40+ databases. Originated at Airbnb in 2015. Became an Apache top-level project in January 2021. Currently at version 6.0.0, released December 2025.

The project is licensed under Apache 2.0 and maintained by the Apache Software Foundation, with active commit volume from over 700 contributors and roughly 72.8k GitHub stars as of May 2026. Production deployments run at Airbnb, Lyft, Netflix, Dropbox, American Express, Nielsen, Udemy, X (formerly Twitter), and hundreds of other organizations publicly listed in the project's IN-THE-WILD ledger.

The stack is Python (Flask + Flask-AppBuilder) on the backend, React with Ant Design v5 on the frontend, and SQLAlchemy + Pandas in the data layer. Version 6.0 brought a full design-system migration, first-class dark mode, native theming, hierarchical dataset folders, group-based access control, MongoDB support, MCP-based AI integration, and over 1,000 merged pull requests from 155 contributors. It is one of the largest active open-source projects in the analytics category.

FEATURES

What Apache Superset does

Apache Superset is a self-serve BI tool with a SQL IDE, a drag-and-drop chart builder, interactive dashboards, scheduled email and Slack reports, embedded analytics, and connectors for 40+ databases. Version 6.0 added native dark mode, custom theming, group-based access control, and a hierarchical dataset folder structure.

Connect to 40+ databases

SQLAlchemy connectors for Postgres, MySQL, BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift, ClickHouse, Databricks, Trino, Druid, MongoDB, DuckDB, and most other warehouses and engines.

80+ visualization types

Drag-and-drop chart builder spanning time-series, geospatial, hierarchical, statistical, and Big Number types. The chart gallery includes dark-mode-aware thumbnails.

Alerts & Reports

Scheduled email and Slack delivery with full dashboard screenshots. Trigger on SQL conditions or fixed cadences. PDF and image attachments via Playwright + Chromium.

Embeddable dashboards

Embed via iframe with JWT-signed guest tokens or via the Embedded SDK. No per-Viewer license fees on a DANIAN-managed instance — €9 covers any embed count.

SQL Lab — a shared SQL IDE

Run ad-hoc queries with autocomplete, schema browsing, query history, and shareable result links. Save queries as datasets to feed dashboards directly.

Interactive dashboards

Native filter bar, cross-filtering, drill-to-detail, drill-by, URL parameter passing. Customer-portal use cases supported through DASHBOARD_RBAC and JWT-signed guest tokens.

Row-Level Security

Filter dataset rows by user role at query time. Combine with group-based access control (new in 6.0) for multi-tenant agency or customer-portal scenarios.

Caching layer

Redis caching with per-dataset TTL controls. Async query results stored separately from the metadata DB so SQL Lab stays responsive.

WHY MANAGED

Why teams pick managed Apache Superset

In August 2025, Salesforce announced a 6% list-price increase across Tableau and reportedly 9–33% on legacy on-prem subscription licenses — the first major hike since 2018. Renewals starting in 2026 are pushing data teams to evaluate Apache Superset. Self-hosting it is straightforward until the Alerts & Reports feature ships blank emails because the worker has no headless browser.

Running Apache Superset in production is not docker compose up. The official compose file uses SQLite as the metadata database, which the Superset documentation itself flags as unsuitable for production because SQLite has limited concurrency support and lives on the local filesystem. Async queries via Celery require Redis as both broker and results backend, plus a worker container, plus a beat scheduler — none of which the default image wires together. Long-running SQL queries silently fail when Gunicorn workers hit their default timeout.

The Alerts & Reports feature — the reason most teams switch to Superset over a notebook — does not work out of the box. The worker container needs Playwright with Chromium installed (since version 4.1.x; Selenium with geckodriver before that). Without it, every scheduled report fails with Failed to take a screenshot errors logged into a Celery worker your team probably isn't watching. The Apache Superset GitHub issue tracker has standing threads about this failure mode (issues #34774, #36457, #33654, #24948) going back years. The ARM64 driver gap, the SSO redirect breaking screenshots, the SECRET_KEY rotation invalidating stored database credentials — these are not edge cases. They are the operational tail every self-hoster eventually meets.

We run a Postgres metadata database in the same region as your Superset instance, and Redis pre-wired for Celery and Flask-Caching. You get the working BI tool. We get the pager.

USE CASES

Three teams who run Apache Superset on DANIAN

Superset's range — from SQL Lab queries for an analyst to embedded dashboards inside a customer portal — means it lands in very different teams. Three patterns we see most often, with the regions chosen, the connections wired, and the dashboard counts they actually run.

8-PERSON DTC E-COMMERCE GROWTH TEAM

Replacing Looker Studio after GA4's data-retention limits broke cohort analysis

Deployed in Germany. Connected to Postgres, BigQuery, a Shopify replica, and Klaviyo via Fivetran — 4 SQLAlchemy connections. Six dashboards: Acquisition, Cohorts, LTV, Marketing-mix, Inventory, Returns. Row-level security keyed to brand for a multi-brand parent. Slack alerts on stock-outs and refund-rate spikes. ~120 charts, ~40 datasets, 15-minute cached refresh via async queries.

4-PERSON SERIES-B SAAS ANALYTICS SQUAD

Replacing a $1,440/year Mode bundle and a $35K Looker proof-of-concept

Deployed in Germany next to their Snowflake EU region for low-latency queries. Connected to Snowflake and a Postgres read replica via SSH tunnel. 14 dashboards including weekly MAU/ARR/churn embedded in their customer admin portal using DASHBOARD_RBAC + JWT guest tokens. ~80 SQL Lab queries per week, 9 scheduled reports.

12-PERSON MARKETING AGENCY, 30 CLIENTS

Replacing a Looker Studio + Klipfolio stack with one white-labeled instance

Deployed in Netherlands. ClickHouse (web analytics) + BigQuery (Google & Meta Ads via Fivetran) + Postgres (their PMS) — three SQLAlchemy connections. ~90 dashboards (3 per client × 30 clients). Row-level security filters on client_id; per-dashboard themes (new in 6.0) for white-labeled portals. Embedded SDK with JWT-signed tokens. ~1,400 chart objects on a single €9 instance.

COMPARISON

Four ways to run Apache Superset

Apache Superset is free software. The cost is what it takes to operate. Below are the four paths most teams consider, with the actual monthly cost at 1, 5, and 10 active users. The DANIAN row holds at €9 regardless of seat count.

Tableau Cloud's mixed-license math means a 10-person team typically pays ~$3,500/year just for software access; the same 10-user team on a DANIAN-managed Superset instance pays €108/year. The crossover happens at the second seat. For teams embedding analytics — agencies running 30 client dashboards, SaaS companies showing analytics to their own customers — the savings compound: Preset Cloud (Superset's commercial managed version) charges $500/month minimum for 50 embedded Viewer licenses on top of the per-user fee; DANIAN charges €9 regardless of how many dashboards you embed.

Stay on Tableau if your team already has Tableau certifications and the dashboards in flight. Self-host on a VPS if you have a data engineer who'd enjoy maintaining a Celery cluster. Run a home server if your data sovereignty bar is physical possession. Pick DANIAN if you want the BI tool working tomorrow and the operational tail handled.

BY INDUSTRY

Apache Superset for specific industries

Different industries put different demands on a BI tool. E-commerce wants near-real-time funnels. SaaS wants embedded analytics for its own customers. Agencies want multi-tenant white-labeling. Logistics wants async queries on time-series volume. Superset's plugin architecture and DANIAN's defaults adjust per case.

The operational standard for European e-commerce is GDPR plus the ePrivacy Directive, which governs how customer-behavior data is collected, stored, and processed. DANIAN deploys Superset in an EU region (Germany, Finland, Netherlands, etc) for teams whose checkout data falls under GDPR, with a Postgres metadata database in the same region and a randomized SECRET_KEY per instance so that stored database credentials aren't encrypted under the well-known default Flask key.

A typical workflow: daily order-funnel dashboard pulling from a Shopify Postgres replica plus a Stripe data export, refreshed via cached datasets every 15 minutes, with a Slack alert when checkout completion drops below 70% rolling 24-hour. Teams typically run 4–6 dashboards with 80–120 chart objects and 5–8 SQL Lab queries per week per analyst. Async queries via Celery keep cohort analysis responsive when scanning two years of order history without locking the Gunicorn worker.
The practical requirement is private-network access to the production warehouse and reliable scheduled-report delivery.

A typical workflow: 12–14 dashboards covering MAU, ARR, churn, and trial-to-paid conversion, plus 3–4 customer-facing dashboards embedded in the SaaS company's product admin portal using DASHBOARD_RBAC and JWT-signed guest tokens. Alerts on activation-rate regressions. ~80 SQL Lab queries per week, 9 scheduled reports. Async queries handle the 12-month rolling window aggregations that would otherwise time out a synchronous Superset worker.
Agency operations sit on two contractual baselines: GDPR Data Processor Agreements with each client and the ad-platform data retention windows (Google Ads, Meta) that force regular ETL refresh. DANIAN sets up Superset with row-level security keyed to a client_id column so a single instance serves multiple clients without cross-tenant leakage. Per-dashboard themes — introduced in Superset 6.0 — let the agency white-label each client's dashboard with the client's own brand colors and logos.

A typical workflow: 3 templated dashboards per client (Acquisition, Conversion, Spend) embedded inside the agency's client portal via signed JWT tokens. One Superset instance scales to ~30 clients × 3 dashboards = ~90 dashboards and ~1,400 chart objects on a single €9/month deployment. The Embedded SDK supports drill-to-detail and drill-by on customer-facing views, so the client portal feels like a custom-built tool rather than an iframe.
The buyer-side operational baseline for logistics is increasingly EU CSRD sustainability reporting plus ISO 28000 supply-chain security frameworks — your customers want visible KPIs and audit trails. DANIAN configures Superset with ClickHouse or TimescaleDB connectors for high-volume telemetry data and tunes the Redis cache with longer TTLs for slow-moving inventory dashboards. The Celery worker is scaled for async queries on long-running aggregations.

A typical workflow: a real-time freight-status dashboard pulling from a Postgres orders database plus a time-series store for vehicle telemetry, with a scheduled 7am email summarizing the previous day's exception list. Async queries are not optional here — single dashboard loads often scan 10 million rows or more, which would time out a synchronous Superset worker on the default Gunicorn settings. The metadata DB and Redis instance run on the same VPS for tight cache hit ratios.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Everything teams ask before signing up — answered straight, without sales speak.

Three groups: technical setup, migration, and how DANIAN works as a service.

01

Technical and configuration

Superset includes SQLAlchemy connectors for Postgres, MySQL, BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift, ClickHouse, Databricks, Trino, Druid, MongoDB, DuckDB, Athena, Vertica, and roughly 40 others. We pre-install the most common drivers on first boot. For an uncommon connector — Apache Pinot, Exasol, Hana — message us in chat and we'll add it to your image within the same day.
We run Celery with Redis as both broker and results backend on every DANIAN-managed Superset instance, with the GLOBAL_ASYNC_QUERIES feature flag enabled. Queries longer than the default 60-second Gunicorn timeout shift onto the async worker automatically. SQL Lab results land in Redis with a per-dataset TTL you can tune from your dashboard.
Superset's Row-Level Security lets you attach SQL WHERE clauses to a dataset that filter rows by user role at query time. We help configure RLS for multi-tenant scenarios — agency clients, customer-portal embedded dashboards — including the common pattern of filtering on a client_id or tenant_id column with the user's role mapped via Flask-AppBuilder.
Yes — both via iframe with JWT-signed guest tokens and via the Embedded SDK. There are no per-Viewer license fees on a DANIAN-managed Superset instance; you pay €9/month regardless of how many dashboards you embed or how many end-users access them. We help configure the JWT signing and the CSP headers so the embed renders without iframe sandbox errors.
Superset's Alembic migrations run automatically on container start. We hold major-version upgrades (e.g. 5.x → 6.x) until we've verified the migration on a clone of your instance — typically within two weeks of release. Dashboards, datasets, and saved queries survive intact. The 6.0 release covered breaking changes in THEME_OVERRIDES and ENVIRONMENT_TAG_CONFIG; we adjusted those configs for affected instances during the rollout.

02

Migration and onboarding

We can activate your app on your own custom domain/subdomain. Examples: mydomain.com, anyword.mydomain.com.
Or, on our randomized free subdomain. Example: 963.apps.danian.cloud
