ABOUT THE SOFTWARE

What is Ackee

Ackee is an open-source, MIT-licensed, self-hosted web analytics tool built on Node.js and MongoDB. It tracks page views, referrers, session durations, browsers, operating systems, devices, and optional custom events — without cookies, without persistent identifiers, and without requiring a cookie consent banner in its default mode.

The project is maintained by Tobias Reich (electerious) in Germany. Roughly 4,600 stars on GitHub, 40 published releases. Project licence: MIT. Frontend in vanilla JavaScript; backend on Hapi; data layer in MongoDB; API exposed as GraphQL at a single /api endpoint.

A typical Ackee instance plus its MongoDB process runs in roughly 200–300 MB of RAM under modest load. The tracker is a single async script tag with two data attributes — server URL and domain ID — installable on any HTML page, plus an npm package for client-side-routed apps. Official framework integrations exist for Gatsby, Nuxt, Next, Vue, Svelte, Angular, WordPress (Soapberry), Django, Flutter, and a half-dozen others.

What Ackee does

Ackee is deliberately small. Page views, referrers, durations, browsers, operating systems, devices, screen sizes, optional events, multi-domain support, and a documented GraphQL API. No funnels, no heatmaps, no campaign attribution, no session replay. Its own FAQ says: "Ackee tries to be less."

Cookieless tracking

No persistent identifiers. The visitor is hashed with a daily-rotating salt that is never stored — yesterday's hash cannot be reconstructed.

Durations and devices

Average session duration, browser and OS breakdown, device width and depth, language — all aggregated, none persistent per visitor.

Custom events

Track button clicks, newsletter signups, demo-request clicks, or any event you fire from JavaScript. No goals or funnels — events are raw counts.

WHY MANAGED

Why teams pick managed Ackee

In 2025 and 2026 the legal posture under Google Analytics moved visibly: the Data Privacy Framework went back to the Court of Justice on appeal, the United States oversight body lost its quorum, France's CNIL fined Google €325 million for cookie violations, and Consent Mode v2 enforcement began breaking conversion tracking. Switching to a self-hosted cookieless tool removes most of that surface — if you do not also inherit a different operational problem.

Self-hosting Ackee yourself means owning a MongoDB instance, the Node.js runtime, SSL renewal, CORS configuration with Access-Control-Allow-Credentials, daily backups to somewhere off-machine, retention policy via MongoDB TTL indexes, and the version-bump cadence — Ackee jumped from required Node 22 to required Node 24 inside five months. None of this is hard. All of it is a tax on the actual question, which is how many people visited what page yesterday.

The specific gotcha most self-hosters hit on day one is the tracker script being blocked by uBlock Origin and EasyPrivacy at its default /tracker.js path. Ackee supports renaming the script via the ACKEE_TRACKER environment variable. On DANIAN we set this on request before your trial ends.

Ackee for specific industries

Different industries pick Ackee for different reasons. Below, five honest fits — with the configuration choices we make for each, the regulation or operational standard in play, a real workflow, and a number that matters. Industries without a substantive answer are deliberately omitted from this page.

Publishers live and die by referrer data and the depth of the next click. The regulation in play across Europe is the ePrivacy Directive cookie consent rules, enforced nationally — and reinforced in France by CNIL Deliberation SAN-2025-004 on 1 September 2025, which fined Google €325 million on advertising-cookie consent. Run Ackee in default anonymous mode and the cookie banner disappears, which lifts first-impression metrics measurably.

The DANIAN default config for publishers: deploy in the country closest to your readers, rename the tracker script via ACKEE_TRACKER to defeat EasyPrivacy filters, configure MongoDB TTL retention at 24 months so the database does not silently grow forever, wire a daily off-site backup to a secondary region. A typical mid-size German trade publisher reading 40,000 visitors a month runs comfortably on the base €9 instance.
Static-site shops want first-party analytics that does not require a third-party CDN call from each visitor. Ackee ships official packages for Gatsby (gatsby-plugin-ackee-tracker), Nuxt (nuxt-ackee), Next, Vue (use-ackee for React equivalence), Svelte, Angular (ngx-ackee-wrapper), and a Vuepress plugin — broader framework coverage than Plausible or Umami. The operational standard in play is Core Web Vitals: a third-party analytics script that loads slow shows up in LCP measurements.

The DANIAN default for JAMstack: deploy the Ackee instance on a A DNS record under the site's parent domain (e.g. analytics.yoursite.com) so the tracker request is same-origin and avoids the third-party fetch penalty. Configure CORS with Access-Control-Allow-Credentials enabled — this is the single most common silent-failure mode for new Ackee installs. This is Ackee's strongest cultural fit. Ackee is built by a German developer, the project home positions it explicitly as a Google Analytics alternative, and the anonymisation mechanism — daily-rotating salt that is never stored — is exactly the architecture a German Datenschutzbeauftragte wants to see in writing. The regulation in play is the records-of-processing requirement under European data-protection law, alongside the active Latombe v. The DANIAN default for this segment: deploy the Ackee instance in Germany, the Netherlands, Finland or others; configure 24-month MongoDB TTL retention to match a typical records-of-processing policy. Indie SaaS founders running a marketing site want to know which post drove the demo request, how many people clicked the pricing CTA, and whether last week's launch on Hacker News actually converted. Per-pageview pricing on hosted analytics tools breaks the unit economics; per-seat pricing makes no sense for a one-person operation. Flat-cost analytics with custom events is the right shape.

The DANIAN default for indie SaaS: deploy the Ackee instance close to your audience, wire custom events for the three or four signups and clicks you care about, expose the GraphQL endpoint to Notion or a simple internal dashboard via a permanent token. €9/month flat regardless of whether you ship a hit on Hacker News and get 80,000 visitors that day — Plausible Cloud Starter and Fathom would both charge overage on the spike.
Agencies running analytics for multiple clients run into an architectural fact about Ackee that turns out to be a feature: the project is single-user by design and the maintainer's own FAQ states this is not planned to change. The recommended workflow is one instance per user, which for an agency translates to one instance per client. Each client's data is genuinely isolated — different country, different DPA, different GraphQL token, different credentials.

The DANIAN default for agencies: each client gets a €9 instance in the country they prefer, the agency holds the master billing relationship, per-client DPAs are signed where the client requests one. A 10-client agency spends €90/month with full per-jurisdiction isolation, which compares favourably with any per-client Plausible Cloud or Matomo Cloud arrangement and gives each client their own raw API to build reports against.

Technical and configuration

Ackee requires MongoDB 4.4 or higher — there is no PostgreSQL or MySQL backend. We run MongoDB alongside the Ackee process inside your isolated container, pinned to a recent stable release. We take a full MongoDB dump every 24 hours and ship it off-site; restores take minutes. We monitor MongoDB memory and disk separately from Ackee itself and alert before either fills.
The default /tracker.js path is sometimes matched by EasyPrivacy filters. Ackee supports renaming the tracking script via the ACKEE_TRACKER environment variable — for example to /banana.js or /count.js. We configure this on request when you deploy, so the tracker filename does not match standard ad-blocker rules. The script is served from your Ackee instance, not a third-party CDN, which already helps.
Yes. Ackee supports unlimited domains from a single instance — the project home page calls this out explicitly. You add a domain in the dashboard, get a domain ID, and embed the tracker on each site with that ID. The single-user limitation applies to dashboard logins, not to the number of sites being tracked.
GraphQL only, served at a single /api endpoint. This is one of the things that genuinely distinguishes Ackee from Plausible, Umami, Matomo, and Fathom — all of which use REST. You can issue permanent tokens for service-to-service use, query domains, records, events, and aggregations, and build custom dashboards or status-bar widgets. The schema is fully documented and a public Playground is available.
Ackee hashes the visitor IP, user-agent, and domain ID together with a daily-rotating salt that is never stored. The output is a clientId valid for that day only. The project's Anonymization.md documents this explicitly: even a database backup cannot be used to reconstruct a visitor's browsing history across days because yesterday's salt is gone. No fingerprinting, no persistent identifiers.
Ackee itself is lightweight — under 100 MB typical. The bulk is MongoDB, which wants 150–250 MB minimum to behave under modest load. The standard DANIAN container for Ackee starts at 512 MB RAM with one vCPU, which is comfortable for sites in the low six-figures of monthly pageviews. We resize before you hit a ceiling, not after.

Different tools count uniques differently — Ackee hashes IP + user-agent + domain with a daily salt, while Google Analytics and Matomo use cookies that persist across days. A first-party self-hosted tracker also gets through Firefox and Brave tracking protection that blocks third-party scripts. Expect Ackee's visitor numbers to be higher than Matomo's and roughly comparable to a server-log count.
On the page you add a single async script tag with two data attributes — your Ackee server URL and the domain ID we provision. You remove the gtag.js block and any consent-mode wrapper. Same for Plausible or Fathom. For WordPress sites the Soapberry plugin handles the embed. We help with the cut-over on chat.
If Ackee is your only tracker and you run it in default anonymous mode, no banner is required. If you also run advertising scripts, embedded video, social pixels, or other third-party tools that set cookies, those still need consent. We can help you audit what is left on the page.

€9 covers everything we do for that app: hardware in the region you choose, daily off-site backups with one-click restore, automatic security patches and version upgrades, 24/7 monitoring, SSL and firewall, and engineering support on Email/LiveChat. If you decide to continue, we charge €9/app/month from day 8. If you don't, the trial ends and you can export your data. No card is required for the trial, and we never auto-charge you without explicit consent.
