What is Snipe-IT

Snipe-IT is a free, open-source IT asset management system. It tracks hardware, software licenses, accessories, components, and consumables — the things every growing IT team eventually outgrows spreadsheets for.

Snipe-IT is released under the AGPL-3.0 license and maintained by Grokability, Inc., the company that started the project in 2013. It runs on PHP, Laravel, MariaDB or MySQL, and a Redis cache.

The codebase is one of the most widely deployed open-source asset trackers — visible on its public GitHub repository, the maintained Docker image, the Kubernetes Helm chart, and a long list of community-built integrations spanning Mosyle, Kandji, UniFi, and the SnipeMate iOS app. The software is web-based: there is no installable executable, only a Laravel application running behind a web server. It is well-suited to a team of 1 admin tracking 100 assets and equally well-suited to a 30-client MSP tracking 15,000.

WHY MANAGED

Why teams pick managed Snipe-IT

Proprietary IT asset management priced itself out of small teams in 2025. Asset Panda's Starter tier sits at $50/user/month with a 5-user minimum — $3,000/year before any assets are counted. Lansweeper's entry tier requires a 2,000-asset minimum at €219/month. Snipe-IT remains free; the operational work of running it is what's left.

"Just running Snipe-IT" isn't where the work is. Laravel applications need a maintained PHP version, a tuned queue worker for outbound mail, a Redis cache for sessions, certificate renewal, a database with sensible InnoDB settings, and a backup process that actually restores. The ongoing work is the security cadence: Snipe-IT shipped five disclosed CVEs across 2025 — including a mass-assignment privilege escalation patched in 8.3.7 that let a low-privileged authenticated user take over the Super Admin account — and a critical RCE in May 2026 (CVE-2026-37709, CVSS 9.8) patched within a release window of disclosure. Running the app yourself means patching monthly, on time, or accepting material risk.

The single most catastrophic self-host failure mode is the APP_KEY problem. Snipe-IT uses Laravel's encrypt() helper for custom fields marked as encrypted (typical contents: IMEI numbers, license keys, serial numbers) and for the stored LDAP bind password. Change or lose the APP_KEY without running the official key-rotation artisan command and that data becomes permanently unrecoverable — there is no undo. This happens every time someone restores from a backup taken before they generated their .env, every time someone migrates between servers without copying the key, and every time the .env is regenerated by a configuration tool.

We apply patched releases to every managed customer within 48 hours of upstream availability, ahead of any required customer maintenance window.

Does DANIAN support LDAP, Active Directory, and SAML SSO?

Yes. Snipe-IT ships with LDAP and SAML support out of the box. We install the PHP-LDAP extension by default, which is the one missing dependency that breaks LDAP for self-hosters. SAML works against Microsoft Entra ID, Google Workspace, Okta, JumpCloud, and Authentik. We help configure the metadata XML or IDP URL during your trial; most setups go live the same day the IDP metadata is shared.

Can I use the REST API and webhooks for integrations?

Yes. Snipe-IT's JSON REST API supports asset, user, license, accessory, and maintenance endpoints. API tokens generate from the user profile and last 15 years by default. We don't rate-limit beyond Snipe-IT's own throttling. The most common integrations we see are Mosyle and Kandji sync scripts for Apple fleets, UniFi device sync, and Zapier or n8n flows triggering checkout notifications.

Migration and onboarding

How do you handle DNS and the custom domain during setup?

We can activate your app on your own custom domain/subdomain. Examples: mydomain.com, anyword.mydomain.com.

If you wish to use a custom domain/subdomain, select that option when ordering your app (or notify us later). We will send you the required DNS records and if needed, our tech team will modify them for you.

Which regions can I deploy in?

21 datacenter locations across six continents. You choose the region at provisioning. Application data sits in the region you choose; pick whichever is closest to your users or matches your data-residency preference.

Can I move regions later?

Yes. Request a region migration from the dashboard and we run the move in the background. The system emails you when the migration completes; total transfer time depends on data volume but typical instances finish in a few hours. There is no extra charge for a region change.

Can I leave and take my data with me?

Yes. Full data export is available at any time, in a portable format you can bring to any infrastructure.

Can I import existing assets from a spreadsheet?

Yes. Snipe-IT's CSV importer accepts assets, users, accessories, licenses, components, and locations. The importer maps your column headers to Snipe-IT fields and pre-creates manufacturers, models, and categories on the fly. We help align your existing tag scheme on the first import so historical asset numbers stay valid.

Can I migrate from AssetTiger, SpiceWorks, or Asset Panda?

Yes, via CSV export from those tools followed by Snipe-IT's CSV importer. AssetTiger and SpiceWorks both export cleanly. Asset Panda's export retains custom fields but loses linked-record references. The first import is the slowest part of any migration.

How do I get users into Snipe-IT — manual, CSV, or LDAP?

All three. Manual entry works for under 20 users. CSV is the fastest for one-time bulk import. LDAP or SAML with auto-provisioning is the right answer once you exceed 50 active users — accounts populate from the directory on first login.

Billing, support, and platform

What's included in €9 per app, per month?

€9 covers everything we do for that app: hardware in the region you choose, daily off-site backups with one-click restore, automatic security patches and version upgrades, 24/7 monitoring, SSL and firewall, and engineering support on Email/LiveChat. What happens after the 7-day trial?

If you decide to continue, we charge €9/app/month from day 8. If you don't, the trial ends and you can export your data. No card is required for the trial, and we never auto-charge you without explicit consent.

Are there per-user fees?

No. The €9/month is flat regardless of how many users log into your app. Add 5 users or 50; the price doesn't change.

What is included in support?

24/7 Live chat and email support, both staffed by engineers who run the systems. We handle DNS configuration, SMTP setup, app integrations, performance tuning, troubleshooting, and migration help. Response time is typically under an hour. There is no tier system — every customer gets the same support.

Can I cancel anytime?

How do you handle backups?

Every customer instance is backed up daily to a separate region from the primary. We test restores. You can request a restore at any backup point within the retention window — usually 7 days for daily backups.

Where is my data stored?

Your application data sits in the region you choose at provisioning — 21 datacenter locations across six continents. Account-level data (billing, account email, support ticket history) is processed centrally. Application data region is picked by you, per app.

What's the SLA?

How does scaling work?

When your tenant approaches the resource ceiling — the base tier holds 1 vCPU/RAM, 30 GB storage — we notify you. Resource upgrades happen with your explicit consent; we will not upgrade your tenant or charge you without it.

What happens if my card fails?

We wait. We don't suspend the app or delete your data on the first failed charge. We email you, you fix the card on file, and we continue.

What about taxes and invoicing?

Invoices can be downloaded from the billing dashboard in PDF the day each charge succeeds. EU VAT is added where applicable and the VAT-reverse-charge regime applies for VAT-registered businesses with a valid number.

Do I get terminal access to my instance?

Yes. Every instance comes with a web-based terminal and a file manager in your DANIAN management dashboard. Useful for managing your data and customizations.

What if I outgrow €9 or the per-app resources?

Resources scale with your usage. If your app needs more vCPU, RAM, or storage, we add it — and we ask first before any change to your plan. €9 is the floor; resource-heavy workloads may price higher, but you'll always know in advance.

Is there a Partner or Affiliate program?

Yes. We have both a Partner program and an Affiliate program available. Anybody can sign up.

Is there a contract or minimum commitment?
