ABOUT THE SOFTWARE

What is Snipe-IT

Snipe-IT is a free, open-source IT asset management system. It tracks hardware, software licenses, accessories, components, and consumables — the things every growing IT team eventually outgrows spreadsheets for.

Snipe-IT is released under the AGPL-3.0 license and maintained by Grokability, Inc., the company that started the project in 2013. It runs on PHP, Laravel, MariaDB or MySQL, and a Redis cache.

The codebase is one of the most widely deployed open-source asset trackers — visible on its public GitHub repository, the maintained Docker image, the Kubernetes Helm chart, and a long list of community-built integrations spanning Mosyle, Kandji, UniFi, and the SnipeMate iOS app. The software is web-based: there is no installable executable, only a Laravel application running behind a web server. It is well-suited to a team of 1 admin tracking 100 assets and equally well-suited to a 30-client MSP tracking 15,000.

FEATURES

What Snipe-IT does

A complete inventory model for IT operations: assets, users, licenses, accessories, components, consumables, and the relationships between them. Built around the check-in / check-out workflow that defines asset management.

Asset tracking with check-in and check-out

Track every laptop, phone, monitor, and adapter. Assign to users or locations. One-click check-in. Full asset history including who had it and when.

Accessories, components, consumables

Three inventory types beyond assets: cables and chargers (accessories), parts that go into assets (components), and items that get used up (consumables).

QR codes and barcode labels

Generate QR or barcode labels in standard sizes. Any smartphone camera works as a scanner. Bulk-print on Avery or Brother label stock.

LDAP, SAML, and SSO

LDAP and Active Directory sync. SAML against Microsoft Entra ID, Google Workspace, Okta, JumpCloud, Authentik. User accounts auto-provision on first login.

Software license management

Track seat counts, expirations, and EULAs per license. Email alerts before renewals. Supports multi-pack licenses with seat assignment per user.

Custom fields and fieldsets

Add fields per asset model: IMEI for phones, MAC address for laptops, calibration date for instruments. Fields can be marked encrypted at rest.

REST API

JSON REST API covering assets, users, licenses, accessories, maintenances. Token auth, 15-year expiry by default, used by Mosyle, Kandji, n8n, and Zapier flows.

Audit log, reports, depreciation

Every action on every asset is logged. Reports cover depreciation, license seats, upcoming audits, end-of-life. Export to CSV for grant audits or accounting.

WHAT'S ALWAYS INCLUDED

Every app. Fully managed.
Nothing extra to pay for.

Every app you deploy includes the full managed service — security, backups, updates, and support from day one.

Automatic updates and patches

Apps run the latest stable version. Security patches applied silently, with rollback if needed.

Daily off-site backups

Multiple daily backups in redundant off-site locations. One-click restore if anything goes wrong.

24/7 uptime monitoring

Continuous monitoring with instant alerting. We respond before you notice.

SSL, firewall, DDoS protection

Auto-renewing SSL, hardened firewall rules, DDoS mitigation on every deployment.

Performance and scaling

We monitor resource usage continuously. When your app needs more headroom, we flag it and upgrade with your explicit approval.

Dedicated engineering support

Real engineers on chat. DNS, SMTP & migration help. All included in €9.

WHY MANAGED

Why teams pick managed Snipe-IT

Proprietary IT asset management priced itself out of small teams in 2025. Asset Panda's Starter tier sits at $50/user/month with a 5-user minimum — $3,000/year before any assets are counted. Lansweeper's entry tier requires a 2,000-asset minimum at €219/month. Snipe-IT remains free; the operational work of running it is what's left.

"Just running Snipe-IT" isn't where the work is. Laravel applications need a maintained PHP version, a tuned queue worker for outbound mail, a Redis cache for sessions, certificate renewal, a database with sensible InnoDB settings, and a backup process that actually restores. The ongoing work is the security cadence: Snipe-IT shipped five disclosed CVEs across 2025 — including a mass-assignment privilege escalation patched in 8.3.7 that let a low-privileged authenticated user take over the Super Admin account — and a critical RCE in May 2026 (CVE-2026-37709, CVSS 9.8) patched within a release window of disclosure. Running the app yourself means patching monthly, on time, or accepting material risk.

The single most catastrophic self-host failure mode is the APP_KEY problem. Snipe-IT uses Laravel's encrypt() helper for custom fields marked as encrypted (typical contents: IMEI numbers, license keys, serial numbers) and for the stored LDAP bind password. Change or lose the APP_KEY without running the official key-rotation artisan command and that data becomes permanently unrecoverable — there is no undo. This happens every time someone restores from a backup taken before they generated their .env, every time someone migrates between servers without copying the key, and every time the .env is regenerated by a configuration tool.

USE CASES

Three teams who run Snipe-IT on DANIAN

These are representative team types we set up most often. Each starts with the same flat €9 plan.

12-PERSON MSP, HAMBURG

Multi-Company mode replacing AssetTiger Cloud across 18 client accounts

Three IT consultants supporting 1,400 assets across 18 SMB clients. Region Germany for sub-15ms latency. Multi-Company scoping in Snipe-IT keeps each client's data isolated. Active Directory LDAP sync for the largest client. Maintenance schedule reminders for warranty renewals fire as email and Microsoft Teams webhooks.

K-12 DISTRICT, LISBON

1:1 Chromebook program replacing a Google Sheet that nobody trusted

1,800 students, 2,100 Chromebooks and iPads tracked, region Spain for proximity. Google Workspace SAML for staff logins. Requestable assets enabled so families request loaners during repairs without an email thread. Custom fields capture device damage notes per check-in.

REGIONAL THEATRE, VIENNA

Production kit tracking across 4 simultaneous shows

60 production staff, 600 tracked kit items spanning lighting fixtures, wireless mics, costumes, and edit-suite gear. Region Finland. Requestable assets enabled with EULA acceptance covering damage liability. Custom fields for production assignment. Pre-show kit checkouts drain through the dashboard in narrow windows.

COMPARISON

Four ways to run Snipe-IT

Three honest alternatives to managed Snipe-IT exist: pay for proprietary asset management, run Snipe-IT yourself on a VPS, or run it at home. The math at any scale a small team would actually run lands on the managed path.

BY INDUSTRY

Snipe-IT for specific industries

Four sectors where Snipe-IT's data model maps tightly to the work — and where the operational tuning DANIAN ships actually matters. Education, MSPs, live event production, and ISO 9001 manufacturing each put specific demands on an asset tracker. The configuration knobs differ per sector.

K-12 districts running 1:1 device programs and university IT departments share the same problem: a thousand-plus devices, a handful of full-time IT staff, and a school year that turns over every June. The operational standard here isn't a regulation but a budget cycle — devices need to be accounted for by the date the district's auditor signs off on the technology levy. Snipe-IT's check-in / check-out workflow, asset history, and depreciation reports are the line items that report eats.

On DANIAN we configure LDAP or SAML sync against Google Workspace or Microsoft Entra ID — accounts populate from the directory on first student or staff login, no manual user creation. Requestable assets handle device loaners during repair queues. A district of 1,800 students typically tracks 2,100+ devices once you include spares, projectors, document cameras, and the lectern PCs. End-of-year collection drives in early June are the heaviest checkout windows on the cluster, and we size the instance to absorb them without queue lag.
MSPs and IT consultancies tracking hardware on behalf of small business clients run into a multi-tenancy problem early. The operational standard is ITIL service-desk discipline: every client touch is logged, every asset assignment is traceable, every warranty renewal triggers a renewal conversation. Spreadsheets stop working at three clients.

Snipe-IT ships Multi-Company mode — a built-in feature that scopes assets, users, and reports per client company within a single instance. On DANIAN we enable Multi-Company by default for MSP customers, set per-client custom fields for warranty contract numbers and supplier codes, and configure the queue worker to send daily check-out summaries to client distribution lists. An MSP serving 30 client companies with 500 assets per client tracks 15,000 assets on a single €9/month instance — the same price the smallest one-client setup pays.
Theatre companies, broadcast facilities, and touring event-production crews need asset tracking that handles a 50-piece lighting kit and 200 wireless microphones with the same data model. The operational standard is pre-show kit sign-off and post-show damage flag — a technician's signature on every checkout, a damage notation if a fixture comes back broken. Snipe-IT was originally built for IT, but the data model fits live-event kit because the workflow shape is identical: assign, check out, return, log issues.

On DANIAN we enable requestable assets and EULA acceptance for the damage waiver flow, set custom fields for production assignment and kit category, and run scheduled maintenance reminders for fixture re-lamping cycles. A regional theatre with four simultaneous productions tracks 400–800 kit items including lighting, sound, video, props, and costumes. Pre-show checkouts and post-show check-ins happen in 90-minute windows; the instance is sized to absorb the bursts.
Manufacturers running ISO 9001 quality systems track calibrated equipment — torque wrenches, gauges, test instruments, fixtures — through a documented maintenance cycle. The operational standard is the calibration interval from the equipment manufacturer's specification, recorded against each piece of equipment, with an evidence chain a surveillance auditor can trace. Snipe-IT's maintenance schedule, custom fields, and asset history cover the workflow without needing a dedicated CMMS.

On DANIAN we configure maintenance schedule reminders to fire 14 days before each calibration due date, set custom fields for calibration interval, last calibration provider, and certificate reference. The queue worker handles the reminder email load so a month's worth of due dates don't pile up overnight. A 50-person manufacturer cycling 300 calibrated instruments through monthly maintenance pulls a quarterly calibration report straight from the dashboard. Asset records survive shop-floor turnover.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Everything teams ask before signing up — answered straight, without sales speak.

Three groups: technical setup, migration, and how DANIAN works as a service.

01

Technical and configuration

Snipe-IT shipped five disclosed CVEs in 2025 — including a mass-assignment privilege escalation fixed in 8.3.7 — and a critical RCE in May 2026 fixed shortly after disclosure. We apply patched releases to every managed customer within 48 hours of upstream availability, ahead of any required customer maintenance window.
Yes. Snipe-IT ships with LDAP and SAML support out of the box. We install the PHP-LDAP extension by default, which is the one missing dependency that breaks LDAP for self-hosters. SAML works against Microsoft Entra ID, Google Workspace, Okta, JumpCloud, and Authentik. We help configure the metadata XML or IDP URL during your trial; most setups go live the same day the IDP metadata is shared.
Yes. Snipe-IT's JSON REST API supports asset, user, license, accessory, and maintenance endpoints. API tokens generate from the user profile and last 15 years by default. We don't rate-limit beyond Snipe-IT's own throttling. The most common integrations we see are Mosyle and Kandji sync scripts for Apple fleets, UniFi device sync, and Zapier or n8n flows triggering checkout notifications.

02

Migration and onboarding

We can activate your app on your own custom domain/subdomain. Examples: mydomain.com, anyword.mydomain.com.
Or, on our randomized free subdomain. Example: 963.apps.danian.cloud
If you wish to use a custom domain/subdomain, select that option when ordering your app (or notify us later). We will send you the required DNS records and if needed, our tech team will modify them for you.
21 datacenter locations across six continents. You choose the region at provisioning. Application data sits in the region you choose; pick whichever is closest to your users or matches your data-residency preference.
Yes. Request a region migration from the dashboard and we run the move in the background. The system emails you when the migration completes; total transfer time depends on data volume but typical instances finish in a few hours. There is no extra charge for a region change.
Yes. Full data export is available at any time, in a portable format you can bring to any infrastructure.
Yes. Snipe-IT's CSV importer accepts assets, users, accessories, licenses, components, and locations. The importer maps your column headers to Snipe-IT fields and pre-creates manufacturers, models, and categories on the fly. We help align your existing tag scheme on the first import so historical asset numbers stay valid.
Yes, via CSV export from those tools followed by Snipe-IT's CSV importer. AssetTiger and SpiceWorks both export cleanly. Asset Panda's export retains custom fields but loses linked-record references. The first import is the slowest part of any migration.
All three. Manual entry works for under 20 users. CSV is the fastest for one-time bulk import. LDAP or SAML with auto-provisioning is the right answer once you exceed 50 active users — accounts populate from the directory on first login.

03

Billing, support, and platform
