ABOUT THE SOFTWARE

What is Mautic

Mautic is the largest open-source marketing automation project — email campaigns, landing pages, lead scoring, and multi-channel journeys in one self-hosted stack. The cost-saving alternative to HubSpot, Marketo, and ActiveCampaign for teams that want to own their data.

Mautic was founded by David Hurley in 2014 and runs today as a community-led project under the Open Source Collective, with more than 1,000 volunteer contributors and over 200,000 organizations using it worldwide. The codebase is PHP built on Symfony 7.3, licensed under GPL-3.0, with code hosted on GitHub at github.com/mautic/mautic.

It requires PHP, MariaDB or MySQL, and a properly configured cron environment.

FEATURES

What Mautic does

Mautic covers the full marketing automation surface area: contact data, segmentation, multi-channel campaigns, landing pages and forms, lead scoring, dynamic personalization, and bidirectional CRM sync. The feature parity with $890/month commercial platforms is the reason the project exists.

Visual campaign builder

Drag-and-drop canvas for multi-step journeys with conditional decisions, action triggers, and time-based delays.

Lead scoring

Customizable point system that rises with opens, clicks, page views, and form fills, then triggers handoffs at threshold.

Multi-channel delivery

Email, SMS, web push, and social broadcast from a single contact timeline. One source of truth for the customer record.

REST API and webhooks

Full OAuth 2 API surface. Outbound webhooks fire on contact create/update, form submission, email engagement, page hit.

Dynamic segmentation

Segments that update on their own as contacts change attributes or behavior. No manual list rebuilds, no stale filters.

Email and landing-page builder

GrapesJS-powered builder with responsive blocks, MJML themes, and per-segment dynamic content tokens.

CRM bidirectional sync

Plugins for Salesforce, HubSpot CRM, SuiteCRM, Pipedrive, Zoho. Marketing scores flow to sales; account updates flow back.

Privacy and consent workflows

Consent custom fields, automated right-to-be-forgotten campaigns, activity logs, anonymous-visitor cleanup, retention policies.

WHAT'S ALWAYS INCLUDED

Every app. Fully managed.
Nothing extra to pay for.

Every app you deploy includes the full managed service — security, backups, updates, and support from day one.

Automatic updates and patches

Apps run the latest stable version. Security patches applied silently, with rollback if needed.

Daily off-site backups

Multiple daily backups in redundant off-site locations. One-click restore if anything goes wrong.

24/7 uptime monitoring

Continuous monitoring with instant alerting. We respond before you notice.

SSL, firewall, DDoS protection

Auto-renewing SSL, hardened firewall rules, DDoS mitigation on every deployment.

Performance and scaling

We monitor resource usage continuously. When your app needs more headroom, we flag it and upgrade with your explicit approval.

Dedicated engineering support

Real engineers on chat. DNS, SMTP & migration help. All included in €9.

WHY MANAGED

Why teams pick managed Mautic

The Mautic 7.0 LTS release in January 2026 is the migration moment — but only if you're ready to operate it. A self-hosted Mautic that ships emails reliably requires more sysadmin work than the install guide suggests.

Mautic looks like a marketing tool. Operationally, it's a Symfony application with strict cron dependencies, a memory-hungry PHP process, an SMTP integration that fails open in unhelpful ways, and a builder layer (GrapesJS) that broke half its themes between major versions. The forum is full of self-hosters whose campaigns went quiet for days before they noticed a cron worker had died — Mautic doesn't shout when its background jobs stop. The deliverability story is worse: SPF, DKIM, and DMARC need correct alignment from day one, or your domain reputation tanks before you've sent your first real campaign.

The specific gotcha worth knowing: Mautic's default PHP memory_limit of 128 MB silently aborts segment recalculations on lists above ~30,000 contacts, and the failure is logged in app/logs but not surfaced in the UI. You only notice when "engaged in last 30 days" segments stop updating. The fix is 512 MB minimum, with headroom for the queue-mode mailer process running in parallel.

USE CASES

Three teams who run Mautic on DANIAN

These are representative team types we set up most often. Each starts with the same flat €9 plan.

 12-PERSON DIGITAL AGENCY

Cutting the HubSpot bill from $1,200 to €126 by moving client retainers to managed Mautic

Germany region for one half of the client roster, Canada region for the North American half. One Mautic instance per client retainer, each on its own subdomain with isolated DKIM keys and per-client SMTP relay (Amazon SES). Campaign templates exported as JSON and re-imported across the 14 client instances; SuiteCRM sync enabled on each. Queue-mode sends throttled to 500/hour per relay.

 DTC SKINCARE BRAND

Replacing Klaviyo abandoned-cart flows on a flat €9/month plan

Australia region for AU/NZ customer base. Shopify webhook fires a contact-update on cart-abandon event; three-step recovery sequence runs at +30 minutes, +24 hours, +72 hours with a discount token on the third send. Transactional SMTP separated from marketing SMTP at the DNS level so order-confirmation delivery survives any marketing-reputation incident. 5,200-contact list.

MEMBERSHIP NONPROFIT

Running multi-language donor campaigns with consent capture intact

France region for member data residency. Double-opt-in forms in English, French, and Spanish; consent date and consent-content URL stamped per contact; right-to-be-forgotten form auto-deletes a contact within 24 hours. Donor lifecycle campaign covers welcome → first-gift thank-you → annual report → renewal ask → lapsed re-engagement. 9,800-contact roster across five chapters.

BY INDUSTRY

Mautic for specific industries

Marketing automation looks different in every vertical. The four industries below are the ones where Mautic's open-source data control, consent and erasure primitives, and per-channel flexibility produce the clearest math versus locked-down proprietary alternatives.

The data processing agreement (DPA) most agencies sign with their clients governs how subprocessors handle customer data — including the named-subprocessor list every retainer client now expects in the contract. We deploy one Mautic instance per client retainer on its own subdomain, each with isolated DNS records, separate 2048-bit DKIM keys, and per-instance SMTP relay credentials — so a deliverability incident on one client never bleeds into another. The agency owner gets one dashboard view across every client instance, with SAML SSO mapped to your agency identity provider.

Typical agency workflow: lead-capture form on the client's WordPress site posts to Mautic via API → contact lands in a client-tagged segment → triggers a four-touch nurture sequence with dynamic content tokens pulling the client's brand colors → at lead-score 80, contact is pushed to the client's SugarCRM or HubSpot CRM as an SQL. Quantifiable: a 14-client agency runs Mautic for 14 × €9 = €126/month — versus HubSpot agency plans that start at $2,400+/month for the same client volume.
The standard separation of duties in e-commerce stacks is that the payment processor owns card-data handling, and the marketing stack only ever sees order metadata (name, email, line items, totals) — Mautic never stores card numbers. We pre-configure the webhook endpoint for Shopify's checkouts/abandoned event and WooCommerce's woocommerce_cart_abandoned hook, ship the Mautic tracking pixel ready to drop into your theme, and split your transactional SMTP from your marketing SMTP at the DNS level — so a marketing reputation hit doesn't kill order-confirmation delivery during a peak sales day.

Typical cart-recovery workflow: customer abandons checkout → Shopify fires the webhook at +0 minutes → Mautic queue-mode mailer sends recovery email at +30 minutes → reminder at +24 hours → 10% discount token at +72 hours → contact tagged "recovered" or "lapsed" based on attribution. Quantifiable: a 5,000-contact list on Klaviyo costs roughly $150/month before SMS add-ons; the same list on managed Mautic costs €9/month flat, no per-email cost on top.
Explicit-consent capture and right-to-erasure response within a fixed window are the load-bearing requirements for donor and member communications in most jurisdictions today. We create the four consent custom fields at first boot — consent yes/no, consent date, consent content URL, request-to-be-forgotten — and scaffold the form, segment, and campaign that auto-delete a contact within 24 hours of an erasure request. Activity-log retention is configured at 36 months by default.

Typical donor lifecycle workflow: prospective donor signs up via double-opt-in form → welcome series of three emails over 14 days → first donation triggers a thank-you and a tax-receipt PDF attachment → annual giving report sent at fiscal year-end → renewal ask 30 days before recurring-gift expiry → re-engagement campaign at 180 days of inactivity. Quantifiable: a 10,000-contact nonprofit pays €9/month for Mautic versus $135+/month for Mailchimp at the same list size, or $80+/month for Bloomerang plus a separate email platform.
Enterprise procurement increasingly asks SaaS vendors for a named-subprocessor list and role-based-access documentation before signing — the marketing-to-sales handoff data path is one of the surfaces they review. We pre-stage Mautic lead-scoring rules using the SaaS-standard model (50 points for high-value page views, 25 points for email engagement, 100 points for free-trial signup), enable the CRM sync plugin and point it at Salesforce, HubSpot CRM, SuiteCRM, or Pipedrive, and configure the daily score-decay job so stale leads age out of the sales queue automatically.

Typical trial-to-paid workflow: visitor signs up for a free trial via a Mautic landing page → contact is created and assigned an initial score of 100 → product-usage webhook fires on key feature activation → score climbs above 200 → Slack notification fires to the assigned account executive and the contact is pushed to the CRM as an SQL with full activity history. Quantifiable: a 2,500-contact B2B list on HubSpot Marketing Hub Professional runs $890/month plus contact overages above 2,000 contacts; on managed Mautic, that same list costs €9/month with no contact ceiling.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Everything teams ask before signing up — answered straight, without sales speak.

Three groups: technical setup, migration, and how DANIAN works as a service.

01

Technical and configuration

We set PHP memory_limit to 512M out of the box, well above the 128M default that causes out-of-memory errors during large segment recalculations and CSV imports. If a segment build exceeds that, we tune higher per instance — you don't edit php.ini, we do.
We do. All five mandatory crons — segment update, campaign update, campaign trigger, message frequency, and queue send — are scheduled with proper --memory-limit and --time-limit flags on first boot. Cron failure is the single most common reason self-hosted Mautic users find emails stuck in the queue; we monitor each job's exit code.
Any provider with SMTP credentials works. Amazon SES, Mailgun, SparkPost, Postmark, Brevo, and SendGrid are pre-listed in the Mautic configuration dropdown; you paste credentials and we test the connection. We don't bundle our own outbound relay — your sender reputation belongs to your domain, not ours.
We assist you with the DNS records after you notify us of your selected SMTP provider.
Yes. The API is enabled with OAuth 2 by default. Webhook outbound events fire on contact create/update, form submission, email open/click, and page hit. We don't gate API rate limits at the platform level; Mautic's own throttling controls apply.
We run the latest stable MySQL version.
Yes, with one caveat: plugins that ship as raw zip uploads can be installed via our file manager.

02

Migration and onboarding

We can activate your app on your own custom domain/subdomain. Examples: mydomain.com, anyword.mydomain.com.
Or, on our randomized free subdomain. Example: 963.apps.danian.cloud
If you wish to use a custom domain/subdomain, select that option when ordering your app (or notify us later). We will send you the required DNS records and if needed, our tech team will modify them for you.
21 datacenter locations across six continents. You choose the region at provisioning. Application data sits in the region you choose; pick whichever is closest to your users or matches your data-residency preference.
Yes. Request a region migration from the dashboard and we run the move in the background. The system emails you when the migration completes; total transfer time depends on data volume but typical instances finish in a few hours. There is no extra charge for a region change.
Yes. Full data export is available at any time, in a portable format you can bring to any infrastructure.
Yes. CSV imports handle the standard fields (name, email, company, tags, subscription status, consent date). For HubSpot and ActiveCampaign exports, we map custom properties to Mautic custom fields on the way in. Mailchimp's consent and opt-in fields map directly to Mautic's consent custom fields. Send us the export and we'll do the first run together on chat.
Your sending reputation is built on the SMTP relay you choose (SES, Mailgun, etc.), not on our infrastructure — so warming applies to your relay's IP pool, not to us. We recommend a four-to-six-week ramp on a fresh domain: start at 50 sends/day, double weekly, watch bounce rate stays under 3%, complaint rate under 0.1%.

03

Billing, support, and platform

€9 covers everything we do for that app: hardware in the region you choose, daily off-site backups with one-click restore, automatic security patches and version upgrades, 24/7 monitoring, SSL and firewall, and engineering support on Email/LiveChat. There are no setup fees or hidden line items. For more info see our Pricing page.
If you decide to continue, we charge €9/app/month from day 8. If you don't, the trial ends and you can export your data. No card is required for the trial, and we never auto-charge you without explicit consent.
No. The €9/month is flat regardless of how many users log into your app. Add 5 users or 50; the price doesn't change.
24/7 Live chat and email support, both staffed by engineers who run the systems. We handle DNS configuration, SMTP setup, app integrations, performance tuning, troubleshooting, and migration help. Response time is typically under an hour. There is no tier system — every customer gets the same support.
Yes. Cancel from the dashboard. We don't charge a cancellation fee, we don't lock data, and we will export your data to you on request before deletion. data to you on request before deletion.
Every customer instance is backed up daily to a separate region from the primary. We test restores. You can request a restore at any backup point within the retention window — usually 7 days for daily backups.
